An Applebee's waitress who posted a receipt with a note from a pastor complaining about the automatic gratuity added to the bill on the Internet was fired on Wednesday after the pastor complained to her manager.
Chelsea Welch, the waitress, wrote in an email to Yahoo News that the pastor (who has since been identified as Alois Bell) told Welch's manager at the St. Louis-area Applebee's that the ensuing firestorm had "ruined" her reputation.
"I give God 10%," Bell wrote on the receipt, scratching out the automatic tip and scribbling in an emphatic "0" where the additional tip would be. "Why do you get 18?" (There were more than eight people in Bell's party, triggering the auto-tip.)
Bell, a pastor at Truth in the World Deliverance Ministries Church, was not amused, and she called Welch's manager to complain.

    MoneyMagnetMagnate,

I guess "Pastor" Bell was absent from Seminary the day they talked about passages relating to obeying rules....

Many people who frequent restaurants are aware of the "required" tips for large parties..... In most cases, it is also clearly printed in the menu...

Writing.... I give God 10%.... What does that mean? Because the "Pastor" tithes 10%, everything should be free?

    Here's one for you....

Imagine if everyone in "Pastor" Bell's church put a piece of paper in the offering basket.... On it was written, "I gave my 10% to the church down the street."

    God Bless,

To use BA Christian speak, "She was not a good witness". She basically TRIED to say that all christians are paying the 10% forward and thus deserve a discount and that she is SPECIAL because she is a "pastor".

It lost something in the translation. What she DID say was "The 10% she gave to god was earthly and meant nothing, she felt she deserved an 80% return that all others should pay, and she was a jerk that was 'teaching' this to others.".

For the record, all the christian groups I was with made a POINT to pay the full amount.

The 10% is, by its nature, supposed to be basically a way of saying THANKS, etc....

AND, in most cases, if a pastor pays a 10% tithe, they did NOT pay 10% ANYWAY! They MADE 90%! Many pastors do next to nothing, and they get paid rather well. I once went to a rather small and poor church. They were sorry they could only pay the pastor a $40K tax free salary. To put that in perspective, that was over the average wage in the US. Factor in that it was ta free, and it was about DOUBLE what most got. Some pastors make WELL over that. I have been to VERY few churches where the pastor didn't actually get a decent salary. THAT is usually because they do it like it is supposed to be done. In one church I went to, the pastor didn't get paid AT ALL! His income came by working for an insurance company as a person that would basically help to prevent claims. He would determine how companies could simplify jobs and make them safer, for example.

My father swore off the church because in his area, in hard times, the pastor always had a brand new mercedes, kept asking for tithes, and never seemed to help. And he didn't just leave the church, he wrote a letter to the pastor about it.

The pastor was a woman and now says:

said her note was a "lapse in my character and judgment" that "has been blown out of proportion." "My heart is really broken," she told The Smoking Gun. "I've brought embarrassment to my church and ministry."
No, she embarrassed herself . She is "sorry" but not sorry enough to stand up for the waitress's job. Just sorry her petty cheap attitude was revealed publicly. Funny thing is - no one would have known it was her if she didn't complain about it.

An employee should not publicly ridicule their employer's customers, whether they identify them or not. That waitress represents her employer and made the employer look bad, as well as herself.

If someone working for me did that, I'd consider firing them too. Whether I did or not would depend on their performance history, but there would be a price to pay. I'd consider it my duty to protect my customers from malicious employees.

Here is a story you'll appreciate....

Years ago, I was going to a church..... They had the annual congregational meeting to review the budget....

One budget item really got me.....

      Pastoral Staff Salaries - $330,000

Now, that was not a lot of money considering this was a big church...... with several associate pastors....

The thing that got me was... They never shared what each "level" of pastors was paid....

So, the "Senior Pastor" could have made $230,000... While the other five divided the remainder....

Personally, I would have preferred complete transparency.....

SUPPOSE, JUST SUPPOSE, that a person KNEW that there were only 3 people! All shared equally and had similar credentials(Credentials in the STRICTEST christian sense INCLUDING good deeds, etc....) and so he went 330,000/3=$110,000! But HE only makes $40K? So NOW he KNOWS that between the other two they make $70K more than HE does! What THEN?

GRANTED! Christian dogma, in the STRICTEST sense, denies him the ability to find out. Such an equal pairing is UNLIKELY. STILL, you have to wonder.

Yeah. I have known some associate pastors at LARGE churches that didn't make all that much. Granted, there were a number of pastors.

Contrary to the way things are going, traditionally it has been FORBIDDEN to advertise or speak of how much one is making. EVEN with prospective employers, a former boss is only allowed to say if a given value is right.

Of course, "in an effort to be equal", a woman is now allowed to know what a man is making to determine if she is "being paid equally". IRONIC! They don't let MEN know what others are making! Bill rate differencs were once brought up by a former client, and they REFUSED to even tell me MY billrate! They further used the reasoning that if they told ME my bill rate, they should tell the other, etc... BTW bill rate is what my employer charges for me.

It's a shame really... I can only think of a few times in my life that I didn't tip anything; and each time was most definitely warranted. Most of the places I go to have outstanding staff, and I'm happy to tip 16% - 20%. The wait staff can make or break a persons experience.

As a former waitress, I sympathize with the girl, but also as former management in restaurants, the restaurant was right to fire her.

The pastor was an absolute jerk and certainly not being very Christian, however, the waitress was very unprofessional in posting that and identifying the pastor. I would fire her, too.

Bad tips and nonexistent tips suck, but it's part of being a waitress. Retaliating in public was not the way to handle it.

The waitress should have been fired!

Applebees or the customer own the receipt, the waitress has no right to take the receipt from the customer or the employer.

If the waitress is stealing employer/customer property who's to say she isn't stealing something like credit/debit card numbers, or anything else.

Applebees was smart by firing the waitress, that shows they don't tolerate employees stealing from the business or customer. Posting online was just stupid, zero common sense. Then the waitress is in contact with Yahoo by email (lol), yea, the pastor ruined her rep., she had nothing to do with it.

The waitress has as much to do with the information on the receipt as applebees, and I DOUBT she took it off the premises. If she did, the restaurant may not get the money and she might not either.

The pastor OBVIOUSLY wanted this public! She wrote the nice little message and stated she was a pastor. If the waitress gets fired, and even if she doesn't, the denomination should defrock that pastor, and fire her from the church. It has happened for LESS!!!! I PERSONALLY saw a pastor get fired because of an AFFAIR he had! In ANOTHER case, personally saw a guy that went to canada, saw something(that became known as the toronto blessing Toronto Blessing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia ), brought the idea to the US, and the denomination DISOWNED HIM! He ended up having to rename the church and basically started another denomination.

Ok, she stole company info. She doesn't have to physically remove the receipt from the property in order to steal info. Credit card skimmers don't steal credit cards in a restaurant, they steal the data/info. on the card, then return the credit/debit card back to the customer before they leave the restaurant. I'm not saying she stole credit/debit info., just saying a person doesn't have to physically have an item in their possession in order to use stolen data/info., in this case the waitress could have snapped a photo with a phone (which is stealing company property/info./data).

I don't care about the pastor from a business view, the problem originated from the waitress taking info. from the business, doesn't matter If she thinks that isn't theft. Data is a big deal in 2013.

Stealing private info, including the CC #, is illegal. It is used only for ID theft and stealing money. The waitress did NONE of that!

in this case the waitress could have snapped a photo with a phone (which is stealing company property/info./data).
She may have, but the company can't lay claim to it, and the pastor INTENTIONALLY put it out there so SHE can't EITHER!

NOPE, the problem originated from the PASTOR! SHE crossed out the value! SHE put the zero there! SHE said that she was an apostate pastor! SHE OBVIOUSLY wanted this to be PUBLIC! BTW receipts are often left out for all to see AND, if she was with a group, as she obviously was, ANY of them might have picked it up to see the value, etc.... IRONICALLY, to make sure they paid enough. It is a COMMON action!

BTW the pastor said Why do *************YOU************** get 18%! WHO did she think was the recipient? Here is a hint! LEGALLY, it is AGAINST FEDERAL LAW for the employer to keep the 18%(beyond taxes). WHY? Because it is to be GRATUITIES that the recipients are to be taxed on as employees. The restaurant industry ALSO claimed that the high tips made up for the low salaries. So there are two reasons why an employer collecting it could be accused of tax, and even minimum wage, fraud!

So the note was actually ADDRESSED to the primary recipient who is....GET THIS....THE WAITRESS!!!

Um, people ... did you even watch the video?

The waitress that was fired wasn't the pastor's server. The waitress who served them showed a co-worker the bill because she thought it was funny, and the co-workers took a picture of it and posted it online.

The actual server was tipped the full amount despite what the pastor wrote on the bill, plus an extra $6.29 in cash that was left on the table.

Let me respectfully disagree with you. You are correct about the serving waitress not being the terminated waitress.

However, I also checked out the above links and you can see where the 18%, $6.29 was crossed out and the additional tip is zero. The total was $34.93. No tip involved on the receipt.

      You can see that here.

        No worries, Steve.

I believe I remember seeing or hearing that the pastor chipped in her share of the tip left on the table, plus her card was charged for the tip as well, so the real waitress actually got a 36% tip.

I don't like what the pastor did, but the co-worker had no business publicly ridiculing her employer's customers, even if they were being dumb.

If you had people there with the money, etc.... You could put the bill on the card, cross out the tip, and say the tip is on the table. And WHY do such things? Sometimes people are short of cash, lazy with math, etc... They will take the cash from everyone, and pay with a credit card. And sometimes they think about the waitresses being denied the money for even a MONTH, and will pay the tip in cash.

And yeah, a coworker shouldn't advertise it. That is a shame.

    Joe,

The video stated the she was charged the full amount, including the tip, plus they left cash on the table. The "zero" was for an additional tip.

Unless I'm misunderstanding something (it wouldn't be the first time), the server actually got more than an 18% tip in total.

If the co-worker would have minded her own business no one would have been fired or embarrassed.

She says she left $6.29 on the table and her credit card was also charged the tip amount. Everyone else at the table also left tips in cash.

Common ground is always good to find. You're right though, there may be the extremely rare occasion where we agree and we are not right.

Oh, but it does every year...several times over, right here in good ole Michigan!

Dennis - the pastor said she crossed out the autotip and that she left a "sufficient tip" of $6. That's the only $$ amount I saw given but I only looked at enough to salve my curiosity.

It was a petty act by the pastor, a co-worker who should have minded her own business and a waitress acting rashly who ended up losing a job. Not a great outcome for any of them.

I have a personal distaste for people who feel a need to "buck a system" when the end goal is clearly to justify being cheap.

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

              Kay,

One of those links in the OP says the full tip was charged to her card, plus the cash was left on the table. Crossing off the amount had no affect on the bill and the group's server actually made out pretty good.

I agree with the rest of your comments. I've never commented one way or another about the pastor's actions. The only comments I've made is that the server's coworker should have minded her own business, had no right to publicly ridicule her employer's customers, and deserved to be disciplined; and that if she was my employee I'd consider it my duty to protect my customers from malicious employees.

If the tip was crossed out on the card, and obviously not authorized, I would think the cardholder could make a complaint that gets action through the credit provider. Don't quote me on this, but I think there's a problem here with something that is not an authorized charge, especially if it comes as a surprise to the diner.

Anyway, whomever that pastor was should have had a lot more brains and class than scribbling a stupid note like that on the charge slip. You don't win any friends acting like an uneducated buffoon.

I remember working as a teen serving food at a religious conference in a public auditorium and almost every last attendee wanted to proselytize and ask me if I was saved, trying to engage me and everyone else serving there in a religious conversation. What can you say except, would you like some fries with that and try to serve food to the rest of the crowd as fast as possible?

It's a two pass system. They give you the bill, you make the changes THEN, and give them your credit card, and THEN they authorize the total you give them. Changing the tip in a normal restaurant is rather common.

Have two wrongs ever made a right?

Talk about a teachable moment. How about both apologize? Isn't there enough real misery in the world? These people have to go looking for it?
