OMG .....I HATE IT!!

Has anyone had to buy a new PC lately and have to start using win 8?
I have been sick for 2 and a half years major surgery so been out of the loop for awhile, I am now disabled, but the government wont give me disability, so I NEED to get back online and start making some money fast, but my PC crashed while I was down, and I bought a new one & as you know IM is always changing, so it's like I'm starting from scratch again....BUT , I don't have time to make money cuz I'm trying to figure out this Dumb a** OS win 8, I have used outlook express for years but no more win 8 does not support it anymore.
For fast cash I jumped on ebay....but man they have changed everything including there fees! I really need to earn, my wife is taking care of everything now and it is getting tight, any suggestions.

Thanks for letting me rant

Good luck with the come-back tour - I'll be rooting for you.

But I agree w/ the Windows 8 thing. I don't have it yet but from what I hear it's not very intuitive. Many are saying that it makes Windows ME look like an OS genius. I have to get my son a new laptop for school this weekend, and I'm not looking forward to messing around with Windows 8 - I'm hoping it's an easy format and install of windows 7 or xp.

I don't like Windows 8 either... even with the "Metro" thing turned off. It might be OK for tablets, but on the desktop, it gets a big "thumbs down" from me.

I think Windows 7 is great though, so I'll be sticking with that for the next several years.

If I were you, I would try to exchange your new PC for a Windows 7 version (you can still find new W7 machines in some of the big box stores). Failing that, you could always purchase a copy of the W7 OS separately.

Yep, W7 is very cheap compared with XP, but you need to check the fine print first to make sure you can install it over W8?

I thankfully bought a Laptop a year ago, with W7, and it has been great overall.

I've been a hybrid windows/linux user for years. But since I tried win8, I have switched full time to linux and haven't looked back since.
The linux OS has grown a lot over the years and is very mature. Most windows programs have a linux alternative or you can run them emulated in wine.
One of the best windows alternatives is the linux mint distro. It has all the programs you need to run a successful online business.
Although I must say, windows7 is quite stable. I've used it for years and was reasonably happy with it. But it still is the most targeted OS by virus and malware though.
Anyway, all the luck to you. I'd also try to install windows7 and get rid of the win8 crap!

There should be NO problem installing win7 on a basic pentium class base system. Of course, most systems today are SUPERSETS of that, so you need to make sure your motherboard BIOS supports it, and you have drivers. It is recent enough that both are LIKELY, but check the support site for your model. Many companies have such a support site. Even if your BIOS ISN'T compatible, they may provide an an upgrade or downgrade to support it. Drivers are almost certainly not compatible, but the support site may provide compatible copies.

If the BIOS isn't compatible, things like reboot, power optimization, etc... may not be available. If they don't have a driver for your video card, for example, you may lose ALL advanced functionality past VGA. That means no advanced graphics games, limited resolution, etc...

So far Windows 8 is awful and we don't like it. I'm going to order one of the Dummies books to try to get up to speed with it because 7 isn't going to be around all that much longer. Sooner or later we'll all have to know how to use it.

I asked why it's what is sold now for computers and laptops and was told it was because MS doesn't want to keep two different systems between that and their other products.

Call the store where you bought it and see if they have any free assistance to learn how to use it. Best Buy has someone to help, but I'm still getting a guidebook because it is really confusing. Intuitive--NOT.

By the way, glad to hear you are better. I understand your frustration when everything is so greatly changed. It used to be wise to think that if something isn't broken it shouldn't be "fixed". Now, the bottom line is all any business seems to care about and that leaves everyone else scrambling.

What about using places like Craigslist to sell things? Lots of rules and regs there on what you can or can't do, but that and local papers with free ads. There are a lot of free ads around online as well. Some, like Craigslist, want person to person buy and sell, so you have to be very careful.

You might also want to take a look at this search for alternatives to ebay - https://www.google.com/#hl=en&safe=a...w=1600&bih=657

        You NEVER know!

Yeah, that is GENERALLY true, but NOT in Microsofts case! They ONCE had TWO products!

        1. Windows
        2. Windows NT

They KILLED Windows, but windows NT was not fully compatible, some couldn't use it, etc... SO, they brought it BACK! It was called Windows ME.

Believe it or not, M/S does NOT make windows anymore!!!!!! Windows 2000, XP, vista, 7 and 8 are NOT windows, but Windows NT!

OK, so they finally killed it. They wanted to run tablets. WHAT did they do? They created a TOTALLY incompatible OS called Windows RT!!!!! It was created last october!

From what I understand, it is NOT made for someone like ME. Apparently they see a computer as a single purpose/single project tool. ***I*** see a computer as a MULTI PURPOSE/MULTI PROJECT tool, and it strains even the Windows 7 interface.

Outside of creating more worthless courses and books that are made worthless because the scope has been DRAMATICALLY reduced, HOW does it increase business? BESIDES, M/S now has competition on EVERY front. THEY BETTER WATCH IT!!!!!!

At this point, if they lose the O/S, they might as well shut down and go home! Ironically the O/S that is currently hurting them BIG TIME on the phone and tablet market is ANDROID! The ONE thing their tablets had going for them is wiped out by the RT version. Their phone version was a JOKE. And the ONE reason why the average person didn't switch on notebooks was FAMILIARITY! GUESS WHAT! The linux versions have gotten better, and M/S is WORSE! Most hotels, that I have seen, now have LINUX on the PCs they offer the public!

If they lose windows? What about Office?

M/S has NO version of office that is UI compatible with office! They changed THAT too!
Oracle and SF now offer a UI compatible, or at least easy, office.

They are in perhaps the MOST danger they have ever been in.
