I can't imagine doing this, it's awful to think this is how some people earn their money.

It's probably not harder than many other people do - just a tad more deadly. Yeah - I think I'd pass on that one myself.

      That Stinks.

      Ever watch "Dirty Jobs"?

People do the sh**tiest things for money.

      Sometimes literally.

But I don't see this as "a job" - this is work people do to earn money to live. This isn't some horrible company forcing labor in dangerous conditions....but locals who have adopted this as a way of life.

I couldn't handle the smell, let alone the work. It's a good image to keep in your mind when you start whining about a long day at the office or the computer, isn't it?

The year is 2013, we as a species, have mapped the human genome, have built a large Hadron collider to chase the Higgs boson and are reaching for Mars.

And yet, stuff like this is still going on in the world. No human should have to live like this.

What does one have to do with the other? There are basically only three ways to mine. One(Tear EVERYTHING down, and refne EVERYTHING! This could be strip mining and the like.) is VERY destructive, takes a LOT of expense, and it may be a while to find ANYTHING!
Another(looking on the surface) is very unlikely now, as so many have done it.

The LAST is old fashioned mining. NOBODY has devised a way to have a robot go through unknown materials, watching out for unknown dangers, to look for an unknown material and remove it from an unknown place, while bracing unknown spots based on unknown signs. White or black or asian in the deepest most untouched areas of africa or on the outskirts of one of the busiest cities in the US or europe, it is done the SAME way! and the likelyhood is finding something, once others have been found there is generally HIGH, and maybe INSTANT!!!!!!

Have you seen the documentaries of some of the african mines(I believe they were for diamonds)? Maybe THEY will seem even WORSE!

Saw it on NatGeo. They had to walk 30-40 km per day with twice their body weight on their shoulders. And they were lucky if they survived 10-15 years in the job...

There's always uncertainty around a volcano, especially in these remote places. Something could explode or other hot gas could escape and instantly incinerate every living thing around.

Surely we've all done tough jobs at one time or another to earn a living, choosing to do so rather than not work and have an income. These people surely know they won't live long after this kind of work, assuming the volcano doesn't get them first.

It's just a crying shame they don't have something else they could do instead. I'm really grateful none of my jobs have ever had this much potential to threaten my life every second you are there.

You never know. There are some REALLY bad jobs in the US that some people take and most could probably find something better, even if it pays a bit less. A LOT of things influence decisions.
