I think this is one of the most insightful motivational speeches I ever heard in my life:

Young-ha Kim: Be an artist, right now! | Video on TED.com

Sorry, I don't think I can embed it but it's well worth the click.

Excellent advice. I'm just doing it now after not doing it for way too long and I am enjoying the hell out of it.

I paint John. It was my major in college and have done it all my life although I got away from it when I was a single parent. I'm back in now, got a studio, selling a few pieces, showing in galleries, getting to know other artists, etc... Having a great time.

Wow. That is awesome. Good to see you getting back to that dream, would love to see your stuff sometime, I hope to someday get back to mine one day as well... Sure didnt dream of bein a marketer or salesman when I was a kid... What the heck happened? Lol

It was the "devil". Honestly the one he talks about in the vid...its the only reason we dont do what comes natural to us, or sometimes even "remember" what comes natural to us. Glad to see you are overcoming that and remembering yourself.

I never stopped doing it. I never grew up. Why bother with a second childhood when you can just keep the first one going forever? I have a lot of fun - although inflicting my singing on anyone else is cruelty, and if I draw it elicits looks of sympathy. What makes me sad and a little upset is when I hear people say "I'm bored". I don't get it. Bored doesn't register in my head at all.

Same here, Sal. I just keep it going at all times. I can't help it, I'm just fun loving. Never a dull moment around here, I won't allow it.

You should see some of the rhymes I come up with when I'm ticked off at hubby. Wait a minute, never mind, those are for my entertainment only.

Oh, and my doodles while I'm deep in thought are amazing, if I do say so say so myself.

Oh, and the way I arrange my walk-in closet is a work of art too.

Haha, Okay, I'll just shut up now.

You epitomize the wonderful childlike person this guy describes Mrs. T- To me that just means you havent let the world take away your little "God" inside, that we all still resemble so much when we are kids. You still carry the refreshing energy of heaven with you, that children do. Like a breeze.

Hmmm, how much to divulge about myself? Nah, it's why I'll write under a pen name. Go Terra and Sal - have loads of fun. Too many people are serious at times when it isn't necessary. A glass half empty is still half full, all depends on perspective and I've never thought doom and gloom was much fun.

Oh don't get me wrong - I'm always serious about it. I don't take my rockhounding or writing lightly. Just because I grin like an idiot a lot over it, doesn't mean I'm not takin' it seriously.

It wasn't meant as any criticism at all, Sal. It's more power to you and Terra for looking on the bright side. Far too many people are all business and no fun - had to deal with too many people like that in a previous brick and mortar life. I'm still working on what I want to divulge online and what won't be, hence the reticence on my part at least until I am comfortably situated where I want to go.

Well, I just relate to you on that level. The part of you that loves pink, speaks to the part of me that loved having a 4 year girl, who's favorite person in the whole world was Daddy, and I hoped she would never lose that.

We use to have our most fun going to the creek and picking out rocks, then stopping at the movie store and buying gem and the holograms videos on the way home from the park... Then to the Pizza place to get carry out... Then we would go home, and sit together and watch gem and the holograms, or beauty and the beast, and paint our rocks! Lol

I use to love shopping with her because everything was pink and yellow and magenta and glittery... her little world was like a rainbow.

She was my best buddy ever. I always hoped that when she grew up she would still have some of that.

She sounds like my kind of girl!

I hope she still does hold some of that! Playing in the creek, and painting rocks never gets old just like running in summer showers or splashing in the puddles they leave behind afterwards never does.

Yup she does still have alot of that, although alot of times the world doesnt get it...

We use to splash in puddles too, some old guy told me when I was 21 or so "Dont ever miss the opportunity to share with your kids the wonder of a powerful rainstorm, teach them to appreciate it instead of fear it...".

So we would splash around pretend we were ducks... I was a really strange Dad, I just totally didnt inhibit myself from getting on her level, it seemed so much more pure than ours as adults.

Later, when I was around 30, I had this uppity girlfriend, who was watching another couple out playing in the rain, while we were sitting in a car trying to keep from melting... and she was making fun of them, saying "Can you believe how little shame they have to be out there like that playing ... How uncouth..."

And I didnt say anything, but I thought, "I cant believe Im sitting in this car with you, and not out there playing".

Wow Sal, that was the best 15 minutes I have spent all weekend.

In songwriting we call the devil the "editor"... That Devils is why I have still yet to finish Terra's song.

We become excited and playful about making art the way we want, then the editor comes in and says "You cant write that, you have to think about this more...".

Songwriter trainers teach you to throw the editor out of the room while the writer is writing. And to write pages and pages frantically like he said... then let the editor come in later and clean up after the writer has written with reckless abandon for a couple of hours or for 10 pages straight...

If you let the editor in the same room with the writer simultaneously, then your creative piece will sound like it was written by an editor, who over analyzes everything, and the artist, and the art itself, never got a chance to really express.

However, if you let the writer go crazy with ZERO editing... then later when he is all written out, the editor can come take that 10 pages and find all kinds of awesome lines to edit down into a majorly cool one pager.

You never get there though if you let him bug the writer while he is writing. You will come out with grammatically correct work that sucks, and isnt moving.

Inside we all have a creator, and an editor...Dont let them work in the same room at the same time.

    Good stuff.

Right now Im saying "I want to type out that guys speech", and something inside is saying "Why? That will take an hour"... and something else is saying "So what?"....and the devil is saying "You cant waste an hour on chasing a rabbit hole that you didnt even intend to go down in the first place", and the creator is saying "Why not?".

Unfortunately , today the devil will probably win, but I need to work on this.

    -John

Self-editing too soon is also a major enemy of creative writing. It is easier to carve a big cumbersome rock into something....

Darn it, I keep trying to resist this irresistible thread but... I have a song about it.

I wont bore you with the whole thing but here is the first verse:

There's a tree out in the back yard
Where me an Mari use to swing
    and behind the house
    We said our vows
With a big orange candy ring
She had just turned nine that sunday
So I guess that made me ten
Man I sure do miss the way things were back then...

Back when the world was full of wonder
and our hearts were filled with zeal
back when superman could save the day
and ole jack frost was real
back when the forrest looked like neverland
and it was fun for just pretend
Man I sure do miss the way things were back then...

The last tag line at the end of the song is

"I can look into my daughter eyes, and that ole feelin comes again, and I see a glimpse of how things were back then..."

Im not fishing for compliments on this seriously, but it seemed like an appropriate song to share at this juncture... I think it expresses alot of what we are talking about here.

Ps. Amazing thread Sal. Will try not to hog it anymore. I just love this subject. Very inspiring contribution for a Sunday. It's perfect.

Disclaimer: This is GOING to sound all corny, so "sorry" in advance!

Wow, I had to come back and read that again Sal. This ^^ has been on my mind for the last few days. I have been beating myself up as to why I can't seem to finish my projects.

"regardless of external judgement." <--That! When reading that line, it was a Joe Robinson kind of facepalm! And it hurt!

I have 6 books just waiting to be published and I just can't get past "what if "they" don't like them?" Silly, just silly.

    'Skip' -

I mean, don't skip lunch, or skip that appointment, or skip school ...

Just 'skip' - ..while you're walking down the street today, just break out into a skip and see what happens...it momentarily releases your 'inner child' -

But don't break a hip!

Dont do skipping, but I do play "step on a crack and break your mothers back..." unconsciously. I catch myself at it sometimes, pacing around on a tile floor in different patterns, focusing. Kind of helps me concentrate sometimes, I dont know why. I will be walking around thinking about something, in a funny pattern and someone will ask "What are you doing" (one direction on this step, another direction on another...) and I catch myself doing it, walking around the cracks.... Its my "pacing".

What are you doing, the hokey pokey? Hopscotch? lol

I remember when Mark and I first went up to the Geneva Basin in CO. Just at timberline there was a creek with a nice little sand beach. That stretch of the mountain was fairly flat with many very narrow felled pine tree trunks. We had a roll of industrial garbage bags with us and ended up putting up a tee-pee with a nice stone backed fireplace inside (gets cold to the max there at night) and a fire ring outside.

The next time we went up there, someone had used the camp and instead of trashing it, added to it with a nice log "couch" by the outside fireplace. We added a log chair. It went on like that the whole time we lived in CO - we'd go there at least twice a summer as it was right down the road and each time there had been improvements, each time we also made one.

I never did ever meet the other person that used the campsite, but I think we both know how much we both appreciated the creativity of the other party. We created, without judgement, and the other enjoyed and created. It was a joyful campsite always rendering surprise and appreciation when we arrived. At times we would hang something we made there for the other person, something like a necklace, etc - and they would respond in like.

It was awesome to share our creative selves without reprisal and with continuing joy and appreciation of even the most simple creations - simple but wonderful. That was a magical place.
