There technically is no South Detroit. Check it:

"The syntax just felt right to me...I fell in love with the line..."

I can relate. I love the story, and how it all was derived from the thought of "street light people", and how that evolved. Wow. So cool.

Just never know where an idea is going to come from.

South is a direction not a name. The more grammatically correct "southern" wouldn't have fit with the lyrics, but I'm sure that he figured that people would be sharp enough to recognize he was saying he was born in the southern portion of Detroit.

Again, getting to read the moment of creative inspiration on this was very cool. Not to be redundundundant. I can see him standing in a window watching that counting the street light people going in and out of the darkness, murmuring to himself "Steet light people---ohhhhohhohhhhhh".

Talk about letting the inward child go on with its bad self!
