Which Hosting Companies Do You HATE?

We use a bunch of hosting companies around the world - some are appalling, some are OK, most are mediocre.

As we're about to get a lot more new hosting for various projects, which ones have you personally used and had terrible experiences with (so that we can avoid them)?

Thanks in advance.

    +1 for Namecheap indeed,

About Hostgator, maybe it's cause it's the host where my personal seo website is hosted, and I don't browse that site every day but in the times I did it has been 5 times offline already due to temporarily bugs or maintenance. Maybe I'm just unlucky.

Nik, I have had only bad experience with them since they got acquired so add me to this list of hostgator naysayers.

Do namecheap still have that manual approval process for a site that can take up to 12 hours?

    HG's performance in 2013 hasn't been great.

I really like HG but they are the most glorified resellers on the planet (now known as Softlayer).

With HG, one is paying for great customer service and Softlayers servers are also top-notch!

I've never had an issue with GoDaddy for domain purchasing - and yes another +1 for HostGator for their response and support.

HG are very quick to respond to me when I have an issue with a domain.

My Worst host of all time goes to Ninja Lion.

servers went off line for days at a time SEVERAL TIMES and so did all ticket responses (in fact don't think they EVER answered a ticket) but the bill kept still coming. They are a sister site to Downtownhost which I would avoid like a plague also

Best all time host ever now only offers VPS but if you need a high performance service its Knownhost.

I use alot of cheap shared hosting for my network and I was quite surprised at the high quality of many of these hosts.

The worst I have used and will NEVER recommend anyone to use is Turnkey Internet! Servers are down for hours at least once a week, sometimes up to 5x a week (no exaggeration). Strange things happened to one of my sites where everything was rolled back about a month... I thought my site was hacked. I went in an started updating things then the next day things were back to normal (this happened a few times and they did not even alert me).

There is also no warnings from them when they engage in any sort of server maintenance.

They the worst I have come across to date!

Ninja Lion is a brand of DowntownHost - FYI. There's a lot of web hosts now a'days that have the EIG thing going on - operating under 25 different brands and the customer doesn't have a clue.

I moved my website to KnownHost, am SAVING TONS of money, and never had an issue. KnownHost have better support. They will do anything you ask them to do...

HostGator wouldn't do the "extra" stuff outside of their specifics.

      .
Hostgator used to be the best but once they got acquired they were shutting my site down the first time it experienced a spike without forewarning. Once I was on vacation and one of my site was down for 7 days. I have had enough and moved all my sites the next day. Godaddy despite its slowness will never shut you down like this no matter what temporary or permanent spikes you experience.

Just moved away from GoDaddy today...

Moved from Bluehost to GoDaddy some time ago, didn't like them either. Bluehost supposedly has good service on their higher paying account but for the basic wordpress sites they overload the crap out of their servers.

For GoDaddy they were rate limiting CDN requests and had some weird outbound firewall configuration that was messing with the PayPal IPN. Washed my hands of both of them.

I've had a Windows site on Arvixe for a while and was happy with it, giving their Linux servers a try now.

Avoid Dreamhost at all costs. Their 99% uptime a few years ago turned into about 85% and sites are slow loading. I lost a lot of money due to them even though I was only paying about $4/month. I switched to Hawk Host and the speed improvement is like night and day.

Yes, Hostthename is definitely a load of rubbish. The server hosting my websites has been undergoing maintenance since the 21st February and still no sign of any update. I cannot access admin or control panel, so unable to do some urgent work, which is so unacceptable. 11 days and counting. This hosting service was heavily sold on this forum, but too cheap for their own good. You pay peanuts, you get monkeys.

        Hostthename *shudders*

I might actually be doing 5 figures a month right now instead of mid to high 4 range if not for their constant downtime and slowness (lost of a ton of money during "maintenance and upgrades"). Slow and vague support reply with chat only available every other day? Check that one too.

HG's support within the past 4 months for me as been iffy at best. Very slow and circular with never ending verification this and that on my account.

Also, chat sessions now last at least 15+ minutes even if I have only one question. Never mind the queue to be helped, I get that, but why does it take 5+ minutes to ask what my problem is? I ALREADY typed it in lol.

They used to be so speedy I actually enjoyed asking different questions about my account. Now contacting support is done only on a desperate need to know basis.

When getting hosting, always make sure your site gets hosted in your target country. I have a friend who went with Go Daddy in the UK, but the site is hosted in the Netherlands, 1&1 customers get servers in Germany (unless that changed recently)

DON't use Fasthosts, the hosting is cheap but Fasthosts are blocking googlebot (all sites hosted with them get notification from Google cannot access site, support dont know a thing & all sites with them are down in rankings).

Tried UK2.net once, left after a month, the hosting did not work most of the time and was a VPS

Eukhost is good for using in UK, never had issues and have access to full Cpanel/WHM

I also use aseohosting so I can get a package with 5 to 10 different C class IP's in my target country, hosting is a bit slow though.

    Hate is a strong word...

I choose to avoid any of the 50+ hosting companies by the EIG brand, the list is long and growing: Endurance International Group - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

As I am moving out of hostgator, I've done extensive research on non EIG hosting in the past 3 days (I'd rather spend the time researching now than having to move again anytime soon).

I narrowed it down to stablehost and liquilayer and will most likely get started with stablehost for now and I may try out liquidlayer a bit down the road for other sites.

I've been with HostGator for just about as long as they have been around and starting last summer (around aquisition) they started dropping the ball big time. I have a lot of clients on HG and frequently now have problems. Mail service has gone down on at least three this month. One for several days!!!! Are you kidding me? They lost the entire server and when they restored it was very old backup. I had to go in and do another restore from my backups that was current. Another good example to do you're own backups and don't depend on the webhost.

I would suggest everyone put some kind of monitoring on their websites (if like me with many) to keep track of any problems. I just did this a few months ago and it really showed how HostGator has been very troublesome in the last few months. Slow downs, website down for hours, email problems, you name it.

Looking around right now and really haven't found any replacement yet. But I will and after I test for a while I will be moving all my own and customer sites. This will be a huge pain in the ass but dealing with unhappy customers and websites down is far worse.

Hostgator was bought out in June 2012.
Reports like these are common. It's not the same Hostgator you used to have.

      Replacements are easy:
      - Stablehost is an excellent host, and price is cheaper than Hostgator.
      - If you want "unlimited" then use Site5, JaguarPC, or Arvixe.

I'm looking for a good reliable host, too. My HostGator is coming to an end next month and I just decided I won't go with Host the Name again. I notified them through Customer Support that I will not be continuing with them and that I need them to cancel the invoice they generated. Well, now, I've been informed that this request has been "escalated" to someone on a higher level, I suspect. I don't know why, when all I need to do is cancel my service.

    Strange.

I've been using LionHosting.co.uk who, I have to say, have been terrible the last couple of months. I have 10 domains and currently can't access any of them or their home page or support page to complain. And this is the second time in as many months. Also not helped by having a couple of SQL attacks on 3 of my Wordpress sites.

I could be paranoid and think 'why me' but I'm sure I'm not alone. Since changing the configure.php permissions to 640 and installing Wordfence the attacks have dropped off, but that still doesn't stop me being annoyed about the hosting.

I'd gratefully accept any recommendations although Hostgator is the current favourite choice for change.

Hostgator is pretty slow by my testing. I recommend Webfaction, but it does not use cpanel. For cpanel, go with a2hosting.

    * Bluehost (used to be good 3-4 years ago, but now subject to DoS and hacking attacks and emails from Bluehost Ip addresses often get stopped by spam filters)
    * Jumba (bad from day 1, overloaded, DoS attacks weekly, and very slow support)
    * Crazy Domains (too many shared accounts, overloaded servers)
    * TechXpert (hacked at least once per month)

    I now only use Hostgator
