Any Gardeners here?

OFF TOPIC

I've been trying my hand at gardening, man my grandma made this look a hell of a lot easier.

I live in an apt so i dont have much room, but i have a couple pepper plants that are popping out some big bell peppers. I wish i had the room for a more substantial garden (someday). I'd really like to be able to have my home pretty much self sustainable for food at some point.

Anyone else have their own garden?

About the only time I haven't had a garden was when I lived in Tampa

Couldn't figure out what to grow in sand.

Its hard. I had a little garden when i lived over in st. pete and you have to completely prep the area if you want to grow right.

I had to basically dig a bowl in the sand then pack real dirt along on the bottom and a layer of gravel for drain, then fill the rest of the 'bowl' up with dirt and plant. I hate living on a fricken sand bar.

Carrots grow best in sand

Grow enough beetroot, runner beans, peas, carrots, potatoes, etc during the spring, summer, months and you can have veggies frozen or pickled to last you for the year!

It was easier just to move back to NY where there is real nice loamy soil.
I can grow just about anything I want here and have for years.

I haven't planted a garden in a few years now though.
I have berries all over plus asparagus which comes back every year.
I get the left overs from my friends gardens now, much easier that way

I just bought one of those topsy turvy tomato planters to hang in the patio. Looking forward to some of them big red tomatoes I saw on TV. Other than that, ain't no sense in tearing up the lawn and doing all that extra work with so many gardeners and farmers markets around here.

  Yes. Well, it's technically my grandparents', but I help out. Some times I get just about enough of all the work, but it's rewarding. Mostly everything we eat is homegrown.

Me too - apartment - container garden. I have a large deck just crammed with plants - I wish I had more room for herbs and veges, etc.

Right now I mostly have roses and succulents - Maybe this will be the year I part with half of them to make room for some food...

In fact today I had my first rose of spring - Gorgeous smelling French Lace which is long-stemmed and white with a cream center. Thank you Xod -

I have more gardens than I can deal with, but I won't give any of them up. I live on 17 acres and we have an acre and a half in flower gardens, and half an acre in vegtable.
The funny part is I hated when i was a kid and my mom made me work in her gardens. Now, if I have free time that's where I am. Can't wait for spring, up here we can't plant until after May long weekend.

I'm also in the planters and trough gardening field for my apartment. My major problem is that temperatures of over 100º for three or four months at a time tend to kill of what my own efforts fail to. I suppose I really ought to stick to cacti and succulents.

  I got one of those sensitive plant grow kits yesterday to celebrate the warm weather. I'm going to try it out as my first foray into gardening and see if I like it.

  I have had a garden for a few years now. Nothing spectacular, but it's fun.
  
  I plant using the "Square Foot Gardening Method" ( Google it), and I find that you can grow a lot in small 4 X 4 foot raised beds. I just finished building one yesterday afternoon.
  
  For those living in apartments, there are other sizes you can put together to grow veggies and herbs in smaller areas.
  
  I'd be interested to hear suggestions and results with those who use containers to grow veggies in. I'm looking to expand my harvest, have 5 sons with ever growing appetites.

  Yep...My wife and I have have about a half acre under till...we grow corn, potatoes, squash, green beans, tomatoes, peppers and some herbs and a few other odds and ends. Love the fresh tomatoes...we can the rest of what the bugs don't get.
  
  I can't wait until planting time...but the soil is way to cold this year to try and plant early.

Yes, I have had a garden for years. Before I got into internet marketing I used to have a very large garden, that is now scaled back. I only grow flowers now and buy all the vegies I can from the local farmer!!

I am an excellent gardener. Uh...unfortunately I know nothing about it - just an inherited green thumb. Animals live a long time with me too.

If you want some good hints though - Thom has a degree in horticulture of some sort.

I'm a beginning gardener. Have done it for a few years - we've had success with carrots, green beans, cucumbers - and lot of flowers. I never seem to get my tomatoes started early enough. This year, though, we started everything inside in pots good and early - so hopefully we'll get some tomatoes!!

Just tilled up the area for our garden. Got 4 different kinds of peppers, strawberries, onions, potatoes, tomatoes, corn, lettuce, and green bean growing. Also picked up a raspberry plant and two apple trees. Woohoo!
