Police in Stockholm arrest sex-buyer who turns out to be the chief prosecutor they report such crimes to.

I must say I was shocked when I read this news. Prostitution is illegal in Sweden?!

Surely not? (It would be paradoxical for people to be committing an offense under a law of that type which protects them?).

I think it must be being a prostitute's customer that's illegal, rather than being a prostitute?

        You're right:

Prostitution in Sweden - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"The laws on prostitution in Sweden make it illegal to buy sexual services, but not to sell them. Pimping, procuring and operating a brothel are also illegal"

Personally, I think brothels should be legal (for prostitutes' safety), street-walking illegal, and pimping, in particular, should be illegal and harshly punished.

I think I agree with all of this (subject to "pimping" possibly being difficult to define accurately, under some circumstances? Might not necessarily be trivially easy to distinguish it from a brothel's "service-charge" or whatever?). I must say, I was surprised to read this, anyway: I'd have guessed wrongly that being a prostitute's customer wouldn't have been illegal, either, in Sweden.

I think neither is illegal in the UK, but streetwalking, soliciting in public and "living on immoral earnings" (which means "pimping", I think) are.
