Construction of Titanic II only months away

Back in April, only weeks after the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the RMS Titanic, Australian billionaire and mining magnet Clive Palmer announced that he was funding the construction of a modern day replica.

"It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic, but ... will have state-of-the-art 21st century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems," Palmer said in a statement. He deemed the project "a tribute to the spirit of the men and women who worked on the original Titanic."

Based on earlier efforts to resurrect the great ship, I estimated the cost of such a venture to run north of $500 million. Palmer, however, has a financial advantage with his more than $5 billion fortune and a memorandum of understanding with Chinese company CSC Jinling Shipyard to build the vessel. Late last month, his newly created Blue Star Line company (a play on the original White Star Line that created the first Titanic) announced that it had hired Finnish-based Deltamarin to do a full review of the project. The highly respected marine engineering firm will ensure the vessel will be compliant with all current safety and construction regulations, as well as meeting the design criteria laid down by Blue Star Line.

After the review process concludes, the project will then be cleared to start construction, with late 2012 the expected start time. The ship is scheduled to undertake its maiden voyage in 2016.

"Titanic II will be a regular feature on the transatlantic route between the U.K. and USA," Palmer said in a statement. "This magnificent vessel is being constructed in memory of the heroic people who served on the first ship, as well as the passengers who sadly shared their fate."

"We also want to recognise the artists and artisans whose skill, creativity and dexterity has never been fully recognised because of the ship's limited service," he added.

While the Titanic II will visually share the same aesthetics as her predecessor, below the water line it will be a modern, more efficient vessel. Gone will be the coal-fired engines, replaced with cleaner diesel-powered engines. Also new will be a bulbous bow for greater fuel efficiency, an enlarged rudder and bow thrusters for increased maneuverability, and welding in place of rivets.

According to the news release, more than 20,000 people have signed up on the Blue Star Line website expressing interest in the project and future bookings. Ticket details have yet to be released.
Blue Star Line has additional information about this right now on their website: Blue Star Line

Yeah, right...that's what they said last time...:p

Also, probably not a good time to advertise a new "luxury cruise liner", what with all the 'successes' they have had lately...

I'm thinking of getting a new luxury cruise liner funded as well - The "Hindenburg II" - but I could just be full of hot air...

And throw your Titanic DVD in the bin, and don't go near it until your voyage is over!!!!

The concorde would have been fine without that piece getting kicked up into the wing.

The hindenburgs problems were apparently that it used hydrogen(There was an embargo, and nobody would provide them helium), and apparently effectively was covered in THERMITE!(A thoughtless mix of chemicals) If not for that, it would likely have survived with NO problems! It is a pity.

And you CAN'T really bring your own raft! You would have to have one that is small, with a fair size motor, and a large air compressor. you would have to dive into the water, get some distance from the boat, blow it up, and take off. ONE mistake, and the others may notice, crowd, try to push you out, etc.... HEY, it happened LAST time! Some men were said to dress as women just to go off with them!

But YEAH, naming this Titanic II is DUMB! The first one was FAR too ornate, etc... And having a bigger rudder ALSO has its problems. Having welds also has its problems. If the titanic's crew was not so arrogant, were more careful, and navigated better, THEY would likely have survived. But they thought damage was OK, planned the course incorrectly, didn't have a watch, and improperly turned. SOME say they were headed for it, and stopped too late. SOME say they were only headed in the direction, and course changes and actions actually pushed them there. There is NO dispute that it was late action that caused the problem.

The NEW liner, IF as advertised, and IF the changes didn't change the profile, weight and horsepower(but they DO), then the electronics MIGHT have caught the problem earlier, and the larger rudder and bow thrusters MIGHT have allowed it to change course quicker.

And they don't mention what the bow thrusters are FOR! In SOME cases, they can assist with turns and stops and in other cases only to bring it up to the dock.

Of course, the wider hull, greater weight, and larger rudder could mean that they have to be still MORE careful! And hopefully the engines could make it move much faster, but have it cruise at a slower speed. Cruising at a much faster speed ALSO means they have to be more careful, but having the ability to gun the engines into the turn can help change the direction quicker.

I don't think there's any way I'd want to take a trip on anything with the name Titanic on it. It's not just all the recent breakdowns and the ship that ran aground, a stomach virus that often appears is rather unappealing as well.

I am sure it will be fine!!!!

Although insurance, a wetsuit, and something that floats wouldn't hurt?

TECHNICALLY, this IS the third, or maybe the fourth! WOW, I read all the conspiracy theories about how the titanic was switched with her sister, olympia, but the ship now called OLYMPIA did WELL!!!!!! According to wikkipedia: "Unlike her younger siblings, Olympic enjoyed a long and illustrious career of 24 years, from 1911 to 1935."! It even served in WWI! On her fifth trip out, she collided with the bow of a british war ship. The bow was designed to SINK enemy ships by ramming them. Olympia had major damage to 2 compartments, above and below the waterline, and simply sailed back to port for repairs. The warship looked like a total wreck, and nearly capsized! I wonder if titanic could have survived as well.

When they made all the claims about titanic being unsinkable, they didn't take into account the size, speed, impossibility to properly break, and WHAT might cause the damage. Olympia had a simple collision with another ship. Hopefully, such an encounter would be RARE. Titanic ended up driving against ICE that wouldn't move much, and doing damage to a LOT of compartments. Going into an area with lots of icebergs, it was all too likely.

Its gonna be every inch the original specs but with modern day lifeboats. I thinks its a good idea if they can pull it off.

Did the original even have SPACE for the traditional lifeboats?

The latest from Clive is that passengers will be expected to wear period costumes the whoe time they're on the cruise.

Good to see an Aussie giving the Brits a run for their money on the eccentricity game.

I suppose it's not surprising people have already booked trips on Titanic II. They want to be a part of history, even if it's just a tribute.

Personally, I wouldn't go near the ship.

I've read the conspiracies too, and if true, there's nothing to fear, but I'll try my luck elsewhere.

Why would they do that? I bet they are getting everything cheap just in case, which wouldn't help the situation Is that $500 million including construction of an iceberg? Sound a bit pricey, lots of better things to do with that kind of money.
