We Grew Up On Same Music, Same Books, Same Movies

It used to be that the songs, stories, and even spoken dialect would differ from town to town. Now, people around the world, continent to continent hear the same music, read the same books, watch the same movies, are exposed to the same version of English. I find that kind of spooky, myself.

No wonder there's so much violence. Getting bombarded with Bieber, Rhianna, Beyonce 24/7 is enough to drive anyone around the bend.

  • Curious that you say that - I have been a student of the history of language and dialect my whole life, because I wondered why everyone talked Differently - it has always fascinated the hell out of me!-

That is interesting. I am a pretty mediocre at languages, myself. I just speak three and only understand six or so, unlike, say, Powell Janulus, who's fluent in over forty languages. Anyway, you must have noticed some standardization of experience in people around the world, eg via movies, music, books, pop culture, "education."

It's because language and culture are the same thing if you go in far enough.

That said - it's spooky to me to hear the standardization of my own language in other cultures - it means they are taking on a lot of aspects of this culture (USA) and that is NOT really all that good a thing.
