Social Media Site Threat For Children!

Hey Everyone,

I have posted this in the Social Media Section but feel it's important to give it as much exposure as possible hence this post in the MIMDF section of the forum.

Just a quick post to make all you parents aware of a site that has gone viral here in the UK.

Being a Dad myself, it's an ongoing battle to keep my kids safe when it comes to social media sites and video based chat sites that keep cropping up online.

The latest fad here in the UK is a site called OMEGLE [edited by moderator to remove the link].

This is a webcam chat room site that seems to have gone viral around the schools and colleges but on visiting the site and having had personal experience of the dangers involved with my 12 year old daughter I felt it my duty to make all my fellow Warriors aware of it.

The companies tag line is "Talk To Strangers" As if that's not enough to get you worried, they have both a monitored chat section AND and un-monitored one for over 18's

But as usual if you click on the 18+ version you simply get a disclaimer and notice that the content is usually of a sexual nature. Click "Yes" to proceed or "Cancel" to exit.

No proof of age is required and you are straight in!

My daughter was pressured into going on the site at a friends house and the two of them were instantly groomed by some sick bast@%d to the point of lifting their tops up which was then played back to them as a recording!

Needless to say the person on the other end said they would delete the recording if the girls did "something else" for him!

At this point the girls got freaked out and came off the site.

We had to get the police involved to really drive the message home to the girls about how stupid they had been.

Now I'm pretty savvy when it comes to this sort of thing but it didn't protect my little girl and it makes me sick to think that someone somewhere has a recording of her topless, but there's nothing I can do about that now.

The site server is based in Oregon and with it being web based chat, the police couldn't trace the users IP address, nor did the girls take note of their username.

What's worse is the site is set up to bounce each chat to a totally different "Stranger" every 15 minutes!

On average it lists that there are 12,000 Strangers online at any one time.

To me this sort of site is an open gateway for every sort of sick twisted person on the planet to gain access to and groom children.

PLEASE PLEASE learn from my experience and make sure your kids are not using it!

Any questions feel free to PM me.

Best Regards To You All,

Andy Benson

Sounds like a good site for parents to block with a nanny program. Unfortunately, there's probably a million or so other sites for kids to meet strangers.

It's a losing battle I know, but I thought it was worth posting after the experience I have suffered with my daughter.

Wouldn't wish that on any parent!

Well, there's only one way to fight the battle, and that is at home with education about the Internet and the dangers and nanny programs (even those that spy on your teen's activities). The education is as important as the monitoring as your kids won't be home at a computer all of the time.

There are a lot of sites with adult content and a lot of social networks, including networks like Facebook, formerly Myspace and others for kids to meet strangers. They are not outlaw sites, but it is a medium where bad people can make contact. Of course, bad people can also make contact in church, girls/boys scouts, malls and any other place teens gather.

Exactly - there are literally thousands of sites like this. Plus, there are clone scripts that anyone can use to start one.

What a piece of shit, I have 3 daughters who are always on their laptops, and I always worry about them being exposed to stuff like that. I always put a bandaid on the camera hole when I buy their laptops. Sorry to hear what happened to you and your daughter

      Thanks Alex,

yeah it's one of those things. She should have known better after all the educating I do with them (the two girls in particular) but it happened at a school friends house who pressured her into it. She needs to "man up" and learn to say "No" more often instead of bending to others peer pressure! Needless to say she doesn't hang around with that girl anymore!

I just felt it my duty to post about it. Even though it's a little personal and something I'm upset about, I'd hate to hear of others who had fallen foul of this site having not said anything!

  • Children are getting addicted to such chat sites. Do not keep facebook out of this list. I request all the parents to keep a possible closer look to your Children online activity. Do not let their childhood spoiled in the garbage of online.

Lucky for me my kids are homers and don't go to friends houses. I always tell my oldest don't let friends pressure her into anything, let them mess up their own lives.

I was going to say essentially what alex said. The EEE netbook I bought actually has a light that comes on by the camera when it is turned on, but I doubt other computers generally have that feature. I always obscure the camera, or cover it up when using such a program. I probably should do it all the time.

There is usually NO reason for them to see you and, if they do, they may know a lot more about you than you know or want them to.

You can ask your kids to claim that the camera is non functioning, or something similar. HEY, it's TRUE! They don't have to mention that it is only a sticker or some such.

There is a pageant winner that recently lost her title, etc... because she was in a porno interview. You NEVER know how such things may affect your future.

My kids are ok with it, the bandaids melt into the laptop over time and are a mess to remove. I even have one on mine for 3 years now

MAN, that site has only one message below the fold! I guess omegles owners have a sense of humor. So WHAT does it say below the fold?

"Get off the Internet and read a damn book!"!!!!!!!

That sounds much like the beginnings of the events that tragically led to the suicide of a Canadian girl by the name of Amanda Todd
