This is a tough loss for me. I'm a huge Alvin Lee fan. Ten Years After was the first concert I ever went to and when I saw Alvin in concert about 12 years later, I consider it the best concert I ever saw. No one else even came close to the fun Alvin was having with the crowd. And, Alvin Lee may have been the first "speed" guitar player.

Looks like Alvin is going home...

My first concert too. Get this. Humble Pie opened. Then Cactus did a set. Then Ten Years After. The ticket? $5.50. Good seats too. Boston Garden. My dad didn't want to let me go because, quote: "The place will be crawlin' with hop heads."

Yeah, that's the common usage these days. Back then it was opium or heroin according to my dad.

  We are talking same eras,maybe it was the location that made the difference? Slang always has mostly been a regional thing.

I think Alvin Lee was really underrated as a song writer. Of course, I love his blues/rock guitar stuff, but he really was deeper than just that.

I mentioned earlier that I would put a Ten Years After album on his Alvin's honor. Instead I went to YouTube's disco and played them all day. I had my favorite songs that I play, but today I heard a lot of songs I haven't listened to a long time. I wouldn't say I'd forgotten how good they are, but they sure did sound good.

For those interested in hearing hours of Tens Years After without having to flip records, change CD's or whatever, the link below will take you to YouTube's Disco (thanks Kurt). Just enter Ten Years After and dig endless TYA.

The disco feature is very cool.

As I posted above, TYA and Alvin Lee were far better song writers than given credit for. They have some great songs.

TYA was similar to The Yardbirds and some other bands of that era in that they were almost two bands. When they were in the studio, you'd get a certain style, like with TYA and "I'd Love to Change The World". But when they were in concernt/live, TYA would be beome an old time rock-n-roll/blues band, like with "I'm Going Home".

I feel TYA/Alvin Lee was great at doing both.

And Leo Lyons may be the most underappreciated bass player of that era and a perfect match for Alvin Lee.
