A very informative field trip

The kids and I went on a field trip with our homeschooling group.

It is a very self-sufficient farm on 12 acres of land.

They raise rabbits, goats and chickens; plus they grow veggies, spices and herbs.

I was fascinated. So were the kids.

They make their own soap and all kinds of other stuff.

The kids drank goat's milk and got to milk a goat.

Very cool.

I guess the reason why I was so fascinated was that this is not a commercial farm - it is simply one family being self-sufficient.

    I loved it.

I remember the first one I got to stay it many years ago.
They are a lot of work, but the satisfaction you feel at the end of a day is priceless. Whole different feeling knowing you have to supply all your needs and not being dependent on the grocery store being stocked.

Exactly. You could tell she was proud of that. It was awesome.

That sounds like a great time. My girls go on a field trip with their school to a local farm to see the animals and gardens as well. Middle of corn fields Iowa so there's plenty of farms around.

Glad you and the kiddos enjoyed your day.

It was also very informative as in learning about food sources.

Cool! even though I live in yard Nazi hell (Cary NC) me and the kids plant a small garden each year. I want my kids to know food comes from the land - not a super market. Kudos to you and your group for making the trip!

My partner in my day job does this too - but not on a fully self sufficient scale. His family (5 kids!) live on a mini farm in Sanford and grow a lot of veggies, raise chickens etc. When my kids go over to visit their friends "allow" my kids to gather the eggs. No problems with me - they're friends get out of some chores for a day and my kids have a blast collecting the eggs and being scared by the hens.

Brings back memories (and nightmares) of when I was a kid myself. My grandmother lived on a farm - they had to grow their own food with 16 kids (yea I know - I have 15 aunts and uncles and no idea how my mamaw did it - I barely keep up with 2).

I remember driving from NJ to KY each year for our summer vacation and getting to "play" with the animals too. We didn't know feeding the chickens or slopping the hogs was work - seemed like fun to us at the time. Once when I was 5 or 6 my uncle (not much older than me) let me play with a rabbit. I thought it was cool since I'd never petted one before. Imagine my horror that Sunday when I found out what the funny tasting chicken really was....

    peace,

    Great trip, Shay.

When I was a kid some of my parents pals ran a dairy farm so when we visited there was always something new and kewl to do. We fed calves from bottles, milked cows, churned butter, picked and cooked veggies - the whole nine yards and it was always exciting when the parents told us we were going for a visit. I miss that fresh milk and butter we got to take home, too. Can't get fresh like that anywhere any more.
