Hello Warriors,

Anyone who lives in a remote rural area will know that you could easily go for weeks, if not months, without seeing a police patrol vehicle. That fact alone makes rural homes and properties an attractive target for criminals.

It's a problem that exists here (in Ireland) in a big way; despite it's relatively small size, most of Ireland is completely empty and, outside of the towns and cities, the population is extremely scattered.

I don't know if anything similar exists elsewhere but here (in Ireland) a system has been in place for many years to help tackle the issue. It's called the Community Alert System; it's a text broadcast system connecting local residents with local police. Mostly, it is used to report things like suspicious vehicles directly to local police officers, who can also broadcast alerts and appeals for information back into the local community.

It has worked extremely well, but a recent pilot scheme in one tiny village to test how the system works if everybody in it can broadcast alerts (not just local officers) to enable the immediate mass mobilisation of the local community in response to crime as it happens has produced some spectacular results.

Early last week, a local man in the area covered by the pilot scheme caught 3 men red handed breaking into an elderly neighbour's house. The local Community Alert System was immediately activated, and was responded to by no less than sixty (60) local people who descended on the area, blocked the would-be raiders vehicles, and then pursued them on foot across fields, before tying them up and handing them over in a nice, neat little package to the police!

In the same area, since the system was put in place, a would-be burglar had his eye shot out by an angry householder who received an alert that his own house was being broken into, another criminal had his legs broken as he exited someone's house carrying his ill-gotten gains, and a would-be tiger kidnapper was beaten up by his intended victim's neighbours

I love it - real consequences for thieves!

Chances are in the US if you beat up the guy breaking into your neighbor's house, YOU will be charged with a crime. Then you'll be hauled into civil court and the crook will end up richer.

Thomas I loved it. Years ago down in Texas if you lived in a small town you would see the same treatment to thieves. And the crime rate was almost non existent.

However many states now say if the thief is leaving the house or fleeing you can't stop him. If you do you can be charged for assaulting him. And then like Kay mentioned there is a good chance the thief can sue you in civil court. and the crime rates are astronomical in the small towns.

I do believe we could save our state and country Judicial system thousands of hours and money if the old time measures were put back into action.

I remember when I lived in Texas being told by a friend who was a police officer that if I ever shot someone as they were leaving my house and they didn't die, the best thing you could do is drag them back into the house and finish the job. Otherwise they or their family could press charges and sue you.

Of course I'd rather be sued than be responsible for the death of a person. But it's too bad that the victim makes out like they do here. In my opinion you should lose all of your rights the minute you enter someone's house without permission.

ps - great story Thomas... I wish we were more like Ireland.

I think we could use around a 300 mil person angry mob to get rid of some criminals over here, too. Problem is - our worst criminals don't do house calls - we'd have to actually go get them.

    Wow, that's awesome!

I wonder how hard it would be to set up a system like that here. Criminals would be a lot less willing to commit crime if they knew things would be broken, put out, and otherwise pummeled by a mob if they got caught.
