My monitor started blinking out on me - and yesterday was almost unusable. I hate to shop - but, even more, I hate to pay full price for anything.

I know I can replace my monitor soon when I find a sale or have time to shop online for one. I had two but gave one to my neighbor last year when his computer was fried by lightning and he was trying to put one together again.

So I went to the local thrift shop - and found a flat screen 19" Dell CRT monitor for $25. It's a top of the line CRT and will do for now. I just hooked it up an hour ago and it works perfectly.

Even better, when I got to the checkout I learned today is 50% off day - so I paid less than $13 for a computer monitor in perfect working order. Yes, it's bulkier than my sleek non-working one - but I have space for it and it will be a great second monitor later. I mean, really, $13???

It made my day! (Clearly I'm not high maintenance - doesn't take a lot to please me).

Resourceful sounds so much better than cheap, doesn't it?

Hmm. You can find a Dell 19" flat screen at eBay for $15. Here's an example:

"local pickup only" - a few hundred miles away - and it's much older than the one I bought.

There are some good monitor deals on ebay that I'm watching (not CRTs) - but I needed something today, not next week.

        Pat -

I was cleaning my garage the other day (it's been quite a while since I did that so it's an ongoing project this month in my spare time) - and like you I have so many "just in case" things.

Once in a while I go wild and throw out a bunch of stuff (usually give it away) - and I always need one of those things within a couple weeks. I've been throwing out more recently as I've decided I only "need" the things because I know I no longer have them. We have a character flaw, girl.

Nice catch, Kay! Definitely makes ya feel good to 'get one over' at sharply reduced cost! That would make my day too. Actually every time I looked at it I would get a vicarious thrill for about a week!

Cheap/Frugal/Resourceful - it works for me!

...heh heh only problem is it works too well. I have closets full of things I wouldn't have got had they not been 'reduced' 'going out of business'... Even some clothes with the labels still on from my going out to work days (5 years ago)

I was also laughing earlier today at all the 'just in case' things I have. I have gone to great expense at reduced prices to have things just in case of the emergency that never comes Thank Xod.

LOL Kay - I've been rather well off - and I've been dirt poor......and Goodwill and Salvation Army are always on my list of "check out first" no matter what. I don't think I've paid more than 10 bucks for jeans in 30 years - and I've had some great ones. When I came home from Paris with an entire fabulous wardrobe my friends were absolutely green. I never did tell them that nothing in the lot cost as much as what they would spend at K-mart, LOL.

Nothing wrong with being cheap -- and I will always feel that way because I like to like myself. Now I know why I like you, too.

I hit Craigslist every morning and every night. If you mark your spot it doesn't
take long. Just recently got a free Kenmore dryer. Needed a five dollar repair.

      Tom -

I just got a free dryer, too - it's still sitting in the garage at the moment.

My current dryer works but I've had it forever and have replaced the heating element myself 3 times now. In fact, I'm on my third washer - and still using the same dryer (that I bought used for $50)!

A friend just had to have one of the new front loading sets (for about $1200) and gave me her 3 yr old Kenmore that is much more fancy-dancy than mine.
Didn't tell her - but for $1200 I'd send the damned laundry out to be done:p

Freecycle is great in the UK. There are 3 groups in my local area.
The things I have got ... and got rid of is unbelievable.
Offered a nice VCR and a dead Nokia cellphone last week. Both
were collected same day :0) The last thing I got was a few months old
upright cyclone vacuum cleaner .... only needed a filter clean and a
new drive belt ....lokks and works like new

The shop I went to is a charity thrift shop. All items there are donated and sold cheaply and the money used to run two drug treatment centers nearby.

As with any thrift store, there's a lot of junk there - but I've found many excellent items. As it's a non-profit, donated items are charitable contributions. It's amazing what people give away, but I've also donated there many times - giving them good things that I no longer needed.
