RAM school: can you ever have too much RAM?

I'm gonna buy a new laptop from HP. You can customize a laptop to come with all sorts of different options. With HP's HDX18, you can customize it to come with up to 8 gigs of RAM. I did some research and I found out that there are two schools of thought about having 8 gigs of RAM and they are about as far apart as anything I've ever seen:

1) Anything more than 4 gigs of RAM is a waste of money and total overkill...

2) You can never have enough RAM!

Which school of thought do you subscribe to? Me, I dunno...

Anything over 4 gigs on Vista 32-bit is a waste as only Vista 64-bit can use more than 4 gigs:

not just vista 32, any 32 bit operating system has this issue.

if you have a 64bit proc. and o.s. then there is no such thing as too much ram (or too much hard drive)

4 gb is enough and maximum for any pc or laptop. No application or game ask for more than that.

I would add that too much RAM only hurts the pocket.
Also there are specialist high-end motherboards and
servers which do take up to 16Gb ram ....maybe more
these days. Generally though 2 to 4Gb is plenty for
      most purposes

There are motherboards that when coupled with risers can have a pc carrying 96+ gigs of ram.

    overkill for marketing though

Unless you are doing some hard core heavy duty melt your processor work on the computer... 4 GB of ram is ideal. These days 2 GB of ram is the minimum. RAM is not as important as the CPU. It is very easy to upgrade ram at a later date, but a pain to upgrade a CPU, unless you are a PC Technician and know how to do that.

As for the CPU, I would opt for a 64 bit processor, because eventually that will be the standard... especially for Vista users. But if you aren't a power user than 4 GB of ram will do the trick.

And for Vista, the video card is as important as the CPU even though it is easily upgraded as well. Don't get a video card with less than 512MB RAM. 512 MB would be acceptable... 1 GB would be better.
