What Anti-Virus Security Suite to buy?

I was using Avast! Free version until now. It doesn't startup these days. Plus I also have to use Comodo Firewall with it as it doesn't have one. The combo really slows my system down.

I'm looking for something that is light on the system. I'm thinking ESET. I've used it before and it's decent. But it's a little expensive.

I've looked at all the tests and ratings. I'm not looking for something with 100% hit rate. I just want decent protection with low system resources use with the latter being the priority. But it needs to have a Firewall.

Any suggestions?

Thank You,
Sumit.

    Sumit,

I use Norton Internet Security right now, but when my subscription runs out I'm switching to ESET.

How does ESET compare to other antivirus? | ESET vs. Competition

It's not as well-known as many of the others, but they've been around since 1998. I've read great things about it and it's the only antivirus program to never miss an in-the-wild virus. Might be something you want to research and consider. Here's a site where you can compare AV software head-to-head:

    Virus Bulletin : VB100 Results -

    Hope that helps.

Yeah... It is very light on the system too. Won't seem like you've installed an AV on your system.I guess I'll stick with ESET.

Btw, ESET is better known for NOD32 AV. The Security Suite has some perks over the NOD32 AV though. ESET is the 3rd most popular AV according to this - http://www.opswat.com/about/media/re...-december-2012

I was wondering if someone has tried other suites like eScan, AVG, Dr. Web, Trend Micro or Trust Port.

      Sumit.

The price is worth it if it never fails. I had one almost get by Norton recently. I say "almost" because it did catch it, but not until it infected my inbox, which resulted in it deleting all my email. I had some testimonials in there, support questions, documents returned to me from my editor, and other important stuff.

That is because it is not known for its anti virus. It is really more of a PC optimization suite.

Quick Text is a plugin that let's you save multiple signatures, categorized, and puts a drop-down menu for each category on your email reply. Each drop-down menu lists the signatures for that category. I have probably close to 100 canned responses saved. It makes working through my email much faster and easier. Two quick clicks and I've got a reply ready to go that might have taken me 5-10 minutes to write manually. It's a huge time-saver for me.

Quick Text has since been updated, and so has Thunderbird. I'm open to suggestions though. I think I read you use Pegasus. I tried that, probably 10 or more years ago, and didn't like it.

Nope. I've always find it more convenient to use email@mydomain, partly for the reasons listed above. I may have to rethink that though.
I hope you know you could use you@yourdomain email with GMail. Then you can redirect all your e-mails to the eMail client of your choice and use it from there. So, even when something goes wrong, you could at least retrieve the e-mails from your GMail inbox. Some people don't like GMail because they snoop in on your e-mail, so if that's the case, then buy better AV.

While this is not my area of expertise, I was having some conflicting issues using AVG when I upgraded my laptop to a Win8 OS. As such, I went to a Win8 forum, and learned that using 3rd party security systems on a Windows OS is actually more prone to problems than it does good.

Even though I am still running the FREE 90 day Trial of Norton, I gotta wonder what sold me on needing a 3rd party security software 'outside' Windows Defender and built-in anti-virus protection?

It was new news to me, the software built into the Win OS is designed to provide compatible security and anti-virus protection (Doh!) and as such, it doesn't cause many of the conflicts 3rd party anti-virus security suites do tend to create... and yet I'm still running Norton myself; lol.

      I miss my MacBook... lol.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials too. It's light, and so far, {knock on wood}, has been very effective!

I have used Trend Micro in the past and was super happy with them.

According to my client, (he's a computer repair guy), he installs MSE, and Malware Bytes. He also recommends using a C cleaner.

MSE is free, CCleaner is free and you can use malwarebytes for free for ten days. The paid version is not expensive, and they really are the best IMO at stopping/removing malicious stuff!

    Hope that helps a little!

You shouldn't crack software. Pirated software is either the number 1 or 2 method to become infected in the first place. And malware developers are so smart now adays; they can trick even advanced users.

Some of the most abhorrent backdoor Trojans / RATware / keyloggers will not be detected by many anti-virus definitions. Or, oftentimes these types of odious Botnets Trojans are retroviruses and will render your anti-virus useless. (or, are otherwise polymorphic in nature meaning they encrypt themselves when not in use; making it impossible for detection; unless they are actively executing which can take up only a second of time).

Additionally, and more frightening, is the independently developed malware/keyloggers that are very difficult to detect. - The only viable solution is to only execute code from trusted sources.

Is some pirated software "key generator" a trusted source? - That's for you to decide.

As far as which anti-virus security suite to buy:
    It doesn't really matter. (gasp!)

    I'm comfortable with MSE/Windows Defender

(I also have an impressive array of file scanners that don't offer active protection and are merely used as supplementary scanners).

The thing you have to do, is learn how to avoid becoming infected in the first place.

    Tips:
Avoid pirated content (very big deal)
Harden your browser (very big deal)

Well If you're using Windows, MSE - Microsoft Security Essentials is free and the best. For versions of windows till Windows 7, you need to download and install it. In Windows 8, It's built into the Operating System.
Most computers that you purchase from OEM's come with a free trial of a paid Virus protection program as the companies (Norton, Kaspersky, etc.) pay the OEM's to put it there, which adds to the OEM's revenue.

Sarevok's tips are fantastic. Harden your Browser and computer by not installing 'free' crap that you get on the internet. If you are going to install free stuff, get the actual install files from the source. For browser's, don't install every toolbar and search bar, you don't need it.

Installing all that crap is what makes an OS run slower. Windows especially has a bad name because of all the crap that OEM's install. Mac's don't have that problem since they control the Operating System and the system manufacturing, which is why Mac OS seems to be faster and less vulnerable.

I work in IT and have all Windows devices.

To people who download 'pirated' software, media ebooks etc, all I can say is, how would you feel if that was your product and you were losing money and you're going out of business because of it?

The saying 'do unto others as you would have others do unto you' is a good measure to measure each action before doing it.
