I just bought an expensive laptop - was it a $2500 mistake?

Hi everyone

I'm about ready to start affiliate marketing. Soon I'll be doing what some of you guys do. That's something that's always been a little dream of mine. Regarding this laptop, I should note that I have not yet booted it up, it's still in the box, sealed and unopened. Also, I am not a gamer, I've never played a computer game before.

The base price for this laptop is $1300. I could've purchased it for $1300. But I paid $2500 for it because I'm a speed freak. No, I don't need a drug intervention, but thanks anyway, Dr. Drew

I customized my brand new laptop for speed. I customized it for work and school projects....9 to 5 stuff. I'm a little schizo. Between 9 to 5 I'm a madman. Or maybe, thanks to genetics and coffee, I have a type A personality between 9 to 5.

I'm all business between 9-5, the words "lighten up - take it easy" aren't in my vocabulary between 9-5. America was built by great men who possess the same demeanor. Christopher Columbus was addicted to coffee, as was Henry Ford and Paul Newman.

All I know is that when I use the computer to work on a school or work project and I experience a slowdown or blockage, I go mad. I go nuts. I scream. I act like a racehorse who's stuck in quicksand. I have a little meltdown is what I'm saying.

So that's why when I ordered this computer I told myself to emphasize speed, speed and more speed. So I built it with 8 gigs of RAM and a quad core processor. That is the main reason why it went from being a $1300 laptop to a $2500 laptop. (no desktop, thank you - I bought a laptop so I could get out of the house and work away from home 3 or 4 days a week).

So did I make a mistake in ramping up a $1300 laptop to the tune of $2500?

Before you answer that, you need to know what I'll be using it for: I'm going to build websites with Wordpress and Dreamweaver. I might be using several programs at once. Programs like Photoshop, Dreamweaver and Flash. I might even have a web based video tutorial open when I'm using Photoshop or Dreamweaver. In a nutshell: I'll be using a lot of Adobe software.

I'll note that there's no need to point out that I could've gotten far more for my money by buying a desktop. That's a given. That goes without saying. I already have a high performance desktop for work and school.

I bought the laptop because I need a portable computer that is easy to transport, a computer that I can place in the back seat of my car, or carry on my back when I ride a bicycle or chopper to work or school.

So now that you know all there is to know, don't hold back with your answer. If I made a mistake just say so. Don't be afraid to criticize this aquistion. Then again, maybe I bought the perfect laptop, one that has the type of speed that a busy body like me can utilize? A laptop that'll handle anything a worker bee can throw at it 5 years down the road?

Either way, tell me what you think, because I want THE TRUTH, and unlike Tom, I can handle the truth!

    need...more...speed...must...use...superpowers...

If you don't positively absolutely certainly need a super-duper new laptop, donate it to a deserving good home. PM me for suggestions. ;-)

Oh, and 8GB is way too little. You need 16GB, quadcore...
If you can't run Crysis at full everything, it ain't good enough. :-D

I'm looking for anyone who's savvy in the ways with computer hardware to critique this laptop, especially the processor and 8 gigs of RAM. I know those types of people are out there...

Obviously the 'has a sense of humour' assumption was a mistake. My bad.

        Overkill.

If you want a workhorse, get a bog-standard Dell with 3 GB RAM and built in shared memory video card. With a standard installation (and here I'm making an assumption again) of Vista Ultimate 32 bit, you're not going to be able to access more than 3-3.75GB anyway, you've wasted your money.

Oh, and before you ask, yes, I am a hardcore gamer. Personally, I like creating FPS's and use FPSC X10 on a system that runs on a system with 4GB and 1024K dedicated video card.

Office 2007, Dreamweaver CS3, IIS running 22 individual sites, MySQL with as many db's, and Ulead VideoStudio X2 run comfortably on a system with 4Gig on a centrino core2duo without hitting 50% CPU utilisation. And I don't mean I'm converting a standard 640x480 vid for youtube use either,

If you're on woW at the same time, with Vista 64, then, perhaps, you can justify going with the increased specs, but otherwise, send it back and get something a sensible business apps user would use.

          What?

Did you read the specs listed in the thread starter?

They're right below Tom as he gets dissed by Jack.

It's probably a bit of overkill in reality.

If you HAVE to have that kind of power, I guess it's ok but I wouldn't want it in a laptop since it won't have any battery power.

It's kind of like sports cars. They have tons more power than you would ever need to have but some people really enjoy owning them despite never really able to (legally) maximize their performance.

From the specs, that is a gaming PC erm, laptop. Personally I think that's a bit overkill for what you're gonna do. I'm on a Celeron laptop right now, 1GB RAM, XP, running Adobe Softwares too, Zend Studio, and a couple of others, it still does the job pretty well. But then if you can afford $2,500, it's cool for me. At least you can run Starcraft 2 when it's out or any game in that caliber.

Not really and I rarely play anymore. I wish I have time for gaming but I'm getting older and need to spend more time in business now. Oh well that's life.

AT full power levels .... just how short is the battery life

What the heck extracts all the heat without frying the innards
          or melting the case

Alienware do or used to do laptops to this kind of spec

But laptop heat up faster than a desktop. Perhaps it's not so good for a 9-5 job ...
Main purpose of a laptop is convenient, handy and most suitable if you travel a lot. Otherwise, I think a desktop is more hardcore.

And the internet connection speed play more role than the speed of your pc..

    Anyway, either will do..

Most importantly, it's time to work to get back your investment NOW! Welcome and Good Luck!

I guess the question is: do you regret buying it?
Play with the wee beastie for a couple of days. Run Crysis, shoot people while designing impeccable landing pages while simultaneously crafting the world's best ebook, and if you're happy, then keep it. Look upon the the laptop as a superb tool of the trade, make the appropriate tax deductions, and above all, be happy. :-)

    Yes, you wasted your money.

I had a crazy gaming pc with 2x GTX295 cards and a core i7 extreme.
    Fastest parts available.

But after selling all of them and just using a netbook hooked to a monitor with a Razer Deathadder I find myself to be more productive.
Limited gaming functionality removes other temptations and lets me stick to my sites only.
