Whoaa, 5 months ago I moved from Holland to live in Thailand, after having slept in hotels for about 2 months I moved to a guest house for another month and after that I decided to rent a condo.

Quick cost break down of different rentals here in Pattaya, just to give an idea and make it a tiny bit educational:

- Decent 3-4 star hotels around 25 euro/night = 750 euro/month
- Decent guest house with a bit more space 550 euro/month
- 2 Room Appartment (condo) 375 euro/month + 125/month electricity+water

As you see each time it got bigger and each time cheaper as well as the service level lowers of course, no more cleaning services which is valued at about 200 baht/day or 150 euro/month.

While staying in the condo I actually got a little less happy, sure I have more space and more privacy in some way but it's also more boring, especially when you have to work quite a lot and a tiny balcony with the sun right at it all day long, way too hot so you end up sitting inside with the airconditioning on and the view isn't that great either. I can see the ocean when I really do my best but that's it.

So I went to look around for a house, preferably with a private swimming pool and in a good tourist area. Those are often priced at around 1000-1250 euro/month. Still damn cheap when you compare it to the US or European countries.

After having visited a couple of houses the street wasn't the way I liked it, or the swimming pool ate up the whole garden space so it wasn't the perfect fit really. It turns out that the perfect place for me would come down to around 2k euro/month, and I just refuse to pay so much for just a place to live. You do get a real dynasty place for that though tempting but no, what the heck i need 5 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms for for example.

Then I went to a different real estate broker and he had a nice house, not too big, 3 small bedrooms (I only need one but well), 2 bathrooms, pretty easy when having a guest, and instead of a private swimming pool a communal pool.

The house is at the most perfect location between Jomtien and Pattaya Center so another big plus.

It's kind of a complex divided from the rest of the world with a 2 meter high fence and you find 8 houses within that, the houses are kind of build in a bungalow style and the houses are build in a circle, with a garden styled swimming pool in the middle of it.

Right now it's low season and no one lives in any of the houses lol so it's still a private swimming pool and only 850 euro/month.

I'm feeling the king to rich

Soon when I move I'll make some photo's of it and upload it here, I get the keys the 1st of May.

      You can say that

Forgot to mention: At the opposite of the street there is a huge golf course, never played any golf besides midget golf though so perhaps worth a try some day to do it completely in style

The beach is about 300-400 mtr from there so I could walk it but often it's too hot too even walk 400mtr so I'll probably just take the motorbike.

About 100-150 mtr from the house is one of the best restaurants of Pattaya located, maybe not menu wise as it's not a michelin type of thing but to reach it you walk through a sort of self-made jungle and you dine outside next to some sort of a lake, looks extremely nice and always works to impress people :p

As all the rest is so cheap you can live here real luxury for let's say 2000-2500 euro /month. Totally non comparable to Holland where you live the most basic life with 2 people for 2-2.5k/month

Congrats! I wonder why you choose Pattaya through, it is just about the most sinful place in Thailand. Definitely the place to start a harem.

I kind of got stuck in Pattaya, earlier I wanted to settle at Samui but then Pattaya is in fact also a great place, not too far from Bangkok, and still a large city on itself that has everything to offer what one would want, with or without sins

EDIT: Air desk looks pretty handy indeed but probably not so easy to find here.

Yeah the elephant head is pretty cool, place was all furnished already.

6 Thais or 2 Farangs would fit

Actually we're heading into the raining season right now, (End of May till November), but I heard it isn't that bad, just 1-2 hours a day HEAVY rain and then it clears up fast again and it never really gets cold here so I'll survive. Raining season here sounds like a Dutch summer to me lol.

Yes Thailand outside of Bangkok is still dirt cheap for Rental and utilities. Nice little place there Dennis.

I purchased a house up in Chiang Mai around 7 years ago at it cost me the equivalent of 35,00 euro at the time . For a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house on a private housing estate with swimming pool and 24 hour gated security.

That are the prices indeed. In Pattaya you won't get it for such amount anymore unfortunately. For around 35,000 euro you would get a 2 room apartment though, which is still not a bad deal.

This house where I live now would cost somewhere around 100k-125k euro right now.

Outside of Pattaya it becomes a ton cheaper though. There I think a similar house could still be bought for around 35k and when you have/know some Thai people that can build it theirselves then you're probably done for 15k (500-600 thousand baht).

You can live on a small budget if you live like a Thai, but if you're eating Mama, street food and drinking cheap Thai beer everyday, you're not really living like a king.

It's a nice house you go. You can get places like that in Bangkok for even less per month, but they're out near the airports. I used to rent a 6 Bedroom amazing modern house for 60k a month. Fun times, but left when my roommate decided to leave Thailand. I'd do it again in a heartbeat, but its hard to find successful people here to share a big house with even if its only $1k a month. $1k rent to you and me might not be a lot, but to those that work for a Thai company or school, its a far off dream to be able to afford that.

Pattaya is a little too dirty for my tastes. I can't spend more than a weekend there. Hua Hin is much more relaxed and more my style, but I prefer Bangkok.

I pay a lot more, but its for convenience. I wouldn't call it expensive though, certainly compared to a town of the same size like New York or LA. I can go out to a nice club, spend $100 a night, meet pretty college girls (not working girls), eat fine food, all within 5km of my condo. I feel safer in most places of Bangkok than I ever did in Pattaya, too.

But too each their own! I know Pattaya is certainly a dream spot for many

Pattaya has imo everything that Bangkok has, but then without the pollution caused by continues traffic jams. I am here 300 mtr from a private beach that connects to the Cabbages&Condoms restaurant (you should know that) and Koh Lan is only 30 minutes away with the boat.

Not sure why you ever felt unsafe in Pattaya.

As much as you dislike Pattaya I dislike Bangkok lol.

It turned out a little more expensive:

33,000 baht or the rent (actually 36,000 but I made a trade with $99/monthly SEO service for 3000 baht lol)
1,500 baht for fixed internet line
      1,500 baht for gardening/pool service
      1,000 baht for cable TV
      6,000 baht for electricity most probably (3 airco's ).
      1,500 baht for water

Total 44,500 baht is around 1150 euro.

But it's a great place to be, just bought a karaoke machine and a set of wireless microphones. Actually I just looked for a receiver with some bad ass speakers but then I saw the karaoke show model machine deal for only 8,000 baht (around 200 euro).

Luckily I have no neighbors right now cause if you hear my friends singing, not to mention hear ME singing then you would end your contract right away

Just came back from Vietnam/Thailand/SKorea myself in December. Let's just say Pattaya ... it's an interesting place. On the weekends along the beach and the walking district, makes for some interesting people watching.

Bangkok is cool but the traffic will kick you in the butt. Literally kick you. 1 hour to drive about 7 miles? Happened to us.

In any event, that was my second time to Thailand, first time was 10 years ago and we went to Phuket and Phi Phi Don. Pretty fun and cool.

Before I didn't like Pattaya too much from the stories that I heard but now that I'm hear I really love it. The only downside is that the water is pretty dirty at most of the beaches, especially Pattaya beach. At Jomtien the water is already a lot better though but also far from perfect in the high season.

Right now I'm very close to a private beach but we don't go swimming there often, it's more just to chill / hang out, especially after a drunk night it's very nice to sit there at night with the cool sea wind.

I dislike Bangkok a lot cause of the traffic and the high buildings, it kind of kills the whole Thailand feeling to be locked up in such huge city, at least that's how it felt for me when I was there a few days.

First time for me was also about 12 years ago, no idea why we wait so long in between I went to Koh Samui back then.
