George Jones - What's Hot

I'm sorry to hear that - he was a nice man.

I met George through work about 15 years ago and talked to him many times over the years. He was a true superstar in country music and worked in music well into his 70s. I didn't realize he was still giving performances as the last one I knew of was 2-3 years ago.

In public during the last third of his life, people would say "he looks familiar" but seldom knew who he was...and he didn't tell them.:p

He would talk about the latest song he was promoting and who would be recording it - or the trip he and his wife had taken - or changes he'd made to his house or property - but never about his own fame or accomplishments except to say "back when I was wild, drunk and crazy".

George was telling me one day about a song he was launching in Nashville the following week. A young man came into the conversation and spent fifteen minutes or so offering advice for how to contact people in Nashville that might listen to the song. George listened to the advice and thanked the young guy for his help - but never introduced himself. Later I asked him why he didn't and he said "it might have embarrassed him and there was no call to do that".

Nice story, Kay. I bet that young man sometime later realized
and has a story about the time he gave George Jones career advice.
