Man receives free money... by asking for it

This story is pretty funny.

A man wrote small notes on every dollar bill he spends, that says "Please return this bill to me, I am very poor" and includes his address.

According to the story, "Gary averages about $2 a day and every so often someone will throw in a cash bonus. Last month, he made $60 and the month before $94."

Apparently if you just ask for free money, people will mail it to you. Who knew?

It's a good story but I'm surprised he's admitted to carrying out a money defacing offence that cariries up to 5 years in prison on an international news medium.

EDIT: Apparently it's not an "enforced law" unless it's counterfeiting. In other words it isn't a law. Admitedly I skimmed.

I read a comment about the story that said that legally, you have not defaced money unless you have made it unusable.

So I guess writing on it a bit doesn't count.

Yep, apparently it doesn't count but according to the supposed law, it should since it definately qualifies as "alteration".

See how fast authorities would pounce on it when everyone begins to take advantage of the exchange of money to advertise with text, pics and QR codes.

Fun story nonetheless and it's good to see someone challenging the integrity of a supposed law.

Lol, he'll probably end up getting into trouble for defacing currency & need legal fee money from being in the spotlight/media.

That $60 a month will probably end up costing him thousands...

      Here's the "law":

      Code 18:

"Whoever fraudulently alters, defaces, mutilates, impairs, diminishes, falsifies, scales, or lightens any of the coins coined at the mints of the United States, or any foreign coins which are by law made current or are in actual use or circulation as money within the United States; or whoever fraudulently possesses, passes, utters, publishes, or sells, or attempts to pass, utter, publish, or sell, or brings into the United States, any such coin, knowing the same to be altered, defaced, mutilated, impaired, diminished, falsified, scaled, or lightened- Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than five years, or both."

SO.........I guess what this tells us is that our money is no longer legal enough currency to be able to win a lawsuit on that charge. Kewl.

Since for many years I have performed a torn and restored bill among other money magic, if this law was enforced myself and many other magicians would have already been imprisoned for life.

Don't know about giving my address out, then having to open any envelopes that arrive. Think I'll put my Paypal address on the notes I spend, together with my hard luck story :p
