You knew this was coming: Shots fired from world's first 3D-printed gun

All 16 parts of the controversial gun, called the Liberator, are made from a tough, heat-resistant plastic used in products such as musical instruments, kitchen appliances and vehicle bumper bars.
Defense Distributed, a not-for-profit group based in Texas, was founded by 25-year-old University of Texas law study Cody Wilson, who took eight months to create the gun.
"Once the file is online, anyone will be able to download and print the gun in the privacy of their garage, legally or not, with no serial number, background check, or other regulatory hurdles," A Forbes article wrote.
There is a short video of the gun being fired at the bottom of the article.

Yes it will Kay. That is why the inventor added a chunk of metal to the design. Other wise the only metal was a nail used as the firing pin.

Which could have easily been disguised as part of a belt buckle, eye glasses, etc..., then reassembled after being screened.

Not in any way trying to put ideas in anyones head, just saying when people are forced to use the bare minimum, they get very creative, which requires more detailed screening.

THIS specific gun is useless after a few shots.

HOWEVER they have already created a lower for an AR15 that can fire HUNDREDS of rounds and functions almost flawlessly.

As for Glock - yeah, some people say the lower is plastic, others say polymer.

Regardless of what the lower is made from, I just know that I love mine

Much better & more reliable than a zip gun.

ALSO -- These people who claim that plastic guns can't be detected need to re-think this over with some common sense.

A magazine takes a spring (metal) to feed the next round into the chamber.

The bullets themselves are brass/nickel/lead.. so those are also detectable.

The only way it would not be detected is if it wasn't loaded/able to be fired. Which basically means a useless plastic paperweight.

        Nope, not even close.

Although your programming seems almost complete, not everyone who has, wants or uses a gun is a terrorists, whackjob or someone that people should be very afraid of.

As far as printing guns, this isn't even the tip of the iceberg.

I believe that "printing hardware" has the potential to initiate revolutions on two fronts. One being with inventions and the other being political.

On the political front it will be interesting to see if the government tries to turn us into "ChiMerica" by outlawing certain groups of downloads and blocking certain websites that they deem inappropriate. (Dang-it Batman! Another one of those run-on sentences.)

ChiMerica is a term I borrowed  from Nial Ferguson.

I had it right the first way. Criminals are already armed.....if they obeyed the laws we already have, they wouldn't be...um....criminals.

We in the states are 8 times more likely to be killed by a cop than a terrorist. Tyrants, throughout history, have been scared crapless of an armed citizenship. Around 100 mil own guns here and never kill anyone with them. They are ready if they have to defend themselves or their families, though. Nobody has ever truly invaded our borders because nobody is willing to deal with 300 million armed citizens who aren't going to be happy about being invaded. We don't need our armies at home because we've got one here - it's called Rednecks. I would never feel safe in a town that didn't have armed citizens.

As far as plastic guns.........it doesn't scare me a tad. Just because someone has a gun doesn't mean they are a murderer. Jeeez.

I've thought it strange that with the tons of EPA regulations that come out - they still allow plastic bags and the plastic rings on soft drink cans. We know they are damaging to the environment and to wildlife - we know paper is a safer alternative long term....but you can't find a paper bag in a grocery now.

You can still get paper bags at the grocery here Kay, you have to request them though.
They also have reusable cloth bags for sale at the register.
At least at the grocery store I go to, I don't know about other stores in my area.
As for the Plastic gun, I think it's a neat "novelty" idea and one of many things that demonstrate what 3D printers can be capable of doing.

That's the part that's just silly.

People that want to do damage to other people, don't follow laws. It's not like law abiding passengers on a plane are trying to bring even a store bought gun on a plane, let alone a homemade gun. So they want a law that would be ignored by crazy people?

Wasn't that long ago plastic bottles weren't even around yet. I wish we could go back there. So tired of people tossing plastic onto landscapes. At least glass isn't toxic and will break up over time. Plastic is long term poisoning. I HATE drinking out of a plastic jug. Trying to find some old fashioned metal milk jugs for hauling water on rock hunting trips.

Many have called the glock a plastic gun, and there are several guns that are mostly plastic. ALSO, I saw a movie once that showed a person using a plastic gun, and it looked perfectly plausible. The parts seemed harmless and not like a gun at all, but assembled to a little 2 shot gun. Even in the 19th century, they had some very small and simple guns built from low grade parts. It would be foolish to believe that the current plastics couldn't be used to build a bigger gun that is at least equal in capability.

And BUILT 3d printers now sell for LESS than the last printer I bought before 2000. KITS can cost less than half of that. AND a kilogram of plastic for them can cost less than $50!!!!!

I EVEN saw an add for a printer that is a more conventional version of its predecessor. It's predecessor had more PRINTED parts!

I'm not in the gun niche but my niche is related to the 3D printers (family friendly).

What everyone doesn't notice yet, but they will soon enough, there's currently (today) millions & millions of people that are capable of creating a 3D printed gun whether they realize it or not. Even If they've never heard of a 3D printer (yet) they can still create/build their own unique guns, which IMO is scary as hell.

The entire video game industry revolves around 3D files.

This is one of those things where technology intended to do good things can & will most likely (eventually) end up in the wrong hands & used for bad things.

Those guys that claim a person needs a min. of $10,000 to create a 3D object are completely clueless. There's open source plans (ex: RepRap) for building 3D machines that can be built with materials mostly from Lowes, Home Depot, or other hardware stores. The software is also free. The machine might appear crude, but I guarantee it will build the same finished 3D part that a $10,000+ machine will build.

To show the precision of a DIY 3D printers capabilities for creating 3D objects on a very low budget, the screenshot below shows a gear that was printed, notice the teeth on that gear are very detailed. The screenshot below is kind of low quality but the precision/quality in the finished 3D part on a DIY printer has been available for a few years.

That machine in the image below could be built for between $500-$1000 depending on the sourced electronic parts. Again, the machine might look crude, but that machine could still be printing precision parts 10 years from now.

The wooden 3D printer can create it's own plastic parts for a 2nd generation machine (example below).

Here is a close up of the same DIY 3D printed part from the image/machine above, which shows just how complex a part can be, which again goes right back to the millions of people creating 3D files in the gaming industry that haven't yet heard of a 3D printer, they have the skills, they just don't realize (yet) how those same skills can be used in a manufacturing niche.

Another aspect is that tyrants now have access to cheap weaponry to initiate oppression. No more need to pay billions to shady arms dealers, they can manufacture them themselves for pennies.

You can also bet your bottom dollar that the "spooks" will be monitoring EVERYONE who downloads this information.

No, sorry, can't see any positives out of this.

Because the media gave you tunnel vision, your focused on violence.

There's millions of people world wide that hunt for food. I live in an area of Upstate SC (US) where hunting is very popular & the seasons are regulated by the Gov. to help control animal populations. I know some animal rights people see that as cruel, but cruel is also hitting a deer at 65 mph driving down a road in a car in the middle of the night, then letting the animal die on the side of the road. Without those guns controlling animal populations, some folks wouldn't be eating much, more human fatalities would be happening on the highways from over populated deer. The deer have very few natural predators in this area (east coast, US).

For every negative idea the media puts in peoples heads for 3D printing, I can show you more positive ways 3D printers help people.

Sure the crazies will eventually find this technology, just like the guy in Texas found a knife.

BTW, crazy people don't follow laws, so banning anything to do with printing a 3D gun is insane all by itself. The technology has been on the net for years, it's done, you can't turn back time.

Well, metal guns WILL last longer, etc... I DOUBT this will help tyrants. As for criminals? Apparently the going price for saturday night specials is like $25, so they are STILL cheaper than the 3d printed varieties. Of course, the law abiding have to pay like $700+, so the 3d printer may seem nice for a low use weapon.

On the flip side of guns & crazy people having access to technology that can create a disposable gun, there's more to 3D printing than evil.

The manufactures of industrial 3D printers have been advancing towards creating human organs built from 3D printers, which can save lives for people that need organ transplants.

So even though the media is casting a dark shadow on 3D printing, it has been used for more good than bad. What the public will see is that 3D printing is evil thanks to the media skewing the niche, where in reality a hand gun could be built from a scrap piece of 2x4 wood, a metal firing pin & barrel.

I didn't say 3D printers aren't worthwhile. I said using them to make guns or any other weapons is not a good thing.

I'm excited about the prospects of what can be done with this technology, just saddened that one of the things it will be used for is making weapons.

As Yukon pointed out, there are developments in the field of making replacement parts for people (you get my drift).

I also think it's great your Hubby is using the technology for positive things.

Having clarified my point, everyone, carry on.

The gun in the media might be useless after 6 shots, but the same 3D printer used to make the 6 shooter could be used to make molds for laying out carbon fiber for a longer lasting gun, guns only have a few parts that are actually necessary to be metal (long term wear). I agree the Glock is more practical right now, but technology advances pretty quickly for most things related to PCs & manufacturing.

The possibilities are literally endless when a person can create their own CAD file. In this case (image below) the 3D printers purpose was to create a mold for the carbon fiber for a bicycle frame which is stronger & more durable than the temporary 3D plastic mold.

All the black parts on the bicycle frame below where created by printing molds on a 3D printer (very complex shapes).

Just saying, anythings possible If someone is determined to make something happen, whether it's for good or bad.

      You can't possibly be serious.

A one shot handgun could easily do harm to a lot of innocent people at one time, especially on something like a plane thousands of feet in the air. That's why screening passengers is important at airports.

They went on about people bringing these guns through the metal detectors onto planes. Funny how no one mentioned printing knives or shives and bringing them on planes. Just guns...

Yawn..one can very easily make firearms even with basic tools.

As far as 3d printing them, by the time you buy a printer which can cost anywhere from $500 for a simple reprap to several thousand dollars for a maker-bot replicator, much easier and cheaper to simply purchase a non 3d printed gun instead.

I've also heard that they have "tissue" 3d printers that can make noses, ears and skin parts. Probably organs next! Amazing technology if used correctly.

You don't need to invest in a expensive 3D printer to make your own gun.

For a couple years back one of my friends found a manual on the internet on how to create your own, fully-working MP40 submachine gun. We ordered everything we needed of material on the Internet and after a week of work, we had created our own German MP40 with the simplest tools like a MIG welding machine, angle grinder, a drill and some common hand tools. Two 16-17 year old schoolboys with no gunsmith training.

It does cock, but we have never fired it because we don't have any 9 x 19 mm ammo, but this can also be easily made out of blank ammo, a raw potato (as a mold) and some lead.

You see - Bad guys will always be able to obtain guns no matter how strict the gun laws are (I'm not one of them though). Gun laws & regulations does only affect the good guys and their ability to defend themselves against the bad guys.

Years ago a journalist type went downtown and talked to the homeless teens that were hanging out down there and had a gun in hand within an hour. Probably still could happen today.

I like the idea of replacement parts for medical uses.

I heard this from an army officer:

Apparently he was walking in Vancouver`s in a chinese flea market (he described it as a shady part of town).

and he saw a random AK-47 being sold there in the streets.

The first guy interviewed in this video works for Autocad, which is an authority in CAD software, the software used to create 3D models for 3D printing. The video isn't related to 3D printing specifically, but it's very interesting where Autocad is heading with it's business. I know a lot of people won't like this subject, but it's interesting to me.
