I believe this may wind up being the catalyst of several huge political and legal "issues."

Kim Dotcom is/was hosting the files (there's a shocker).

What's stupid about trying to remove the files from the net is, anyone with CAD skills can create the same thing or better from looking at & measuring a real handgun.

Yep. And as soon as someone commits a crime with one of these they'll ban 3D printers. Those things can be dangerous

Yeah. Real effective move to ask them to take it down. Like going after an ostrich with a flyswatter...

Next comes the usual response... "The horse is getting out. Burn down the barn!"

I would have positioned them as tinker toys.

"The State Dept. hereby requests you remove any and all information regarding your tinker toys from your website"

That would have made great headlines around the world

Well HEY, they are spending BILLIONS to saturate the bullet market with orders! If I were a manufacturer, I would be tempted to sell them almost worthless ammunition.

Some of the plans they have come up with, WOW! They are ALSO trying to get rid of the computer. That may end being a hard thing to do. I got out of electronics because fabrication was getting so much harder. NOW, they have software, open source plans, and coops for the stuff that is still hard.

They will probably get rid of 3d printers also. Who knows, MAYBE they will get rid of the plastic. There ARE some plastics that wouldn't do well in such printers. Maybe they'll mandate that THEY be used for containers.

BTW folks, GUESS WHAT! The US does NOT have access to everything and is NOT the only country! Look at DRUGS!

That's completely impossible, the open source plans have been online for a few years & the materials are mostly available from local hardware stores (Lowes, Home Depot, etc...).

Well, then the only thing that can be done is to tax all these materials to make it unaffordable to the average citizen. The "powers that be" will think of something, be assured of that

I seriously doubt that would happen for nuts & bolt, all-thread rod, etc... besides, those same materials could be salvaged from low cost items like low cost paper printers, etc...

It's done, there's no changing what's already happened, nobody is going to turn back time. Like I said before, millions of people have CAD skills, the world as we know it can't possibly survive without CAD, no cars, planes, trains, houses, toasters, toys, etc... it's all designed with CAD. The same CAD software has been available for personal/home use for anyone that wants it (for years).

The actual materials to build a 3D printer are basically an Erector Set with a PC hooked up to it.

Yeah, I got that. I was making a tongue-in-cheek comment about this country's brain-trust and the way they sometimes think. Perhaps it isn't possible - but that doesn't mean they wouldn't try. You know...to protect the children

What they'll do is put an age limit on those items and you will have to state what you are using them for. Like when you buy a can of compressed air and they ask for your id:rolleyes:

They ask for ID for compressed air now!!?!?!?

WOW! When I was a kid, I thought they were crazy for limiting the purchase of spray paint. Funny, I don't think that helped. BESIDES, the people most likely to do that will likely STEAL the stuff.

Yep happened at WalMart a few years ago. I bought 2 cans of compressed air to clean my computers.
First I was laughing to myself over buying air. Then I went to the self-checkout and when I scanned them an alarm went off. When the girl came up and asked for my ID I fell on the floor laughing.
Turns out you have to be 18 to buy a can of compressed air in NY.

In SC (South Carolina, US) you can't buy shoes at a 24 hour department store (ex: Target, Kmart, Walmart, etc...) on Sunday until after noon (seriously).

Maybe they want the police to have a rest, and limit murder to certan times of the day.

For some reason, SOME act like they NEED a certain type of shoe *******NOW*******. There have been many murders when they DIDN'T get them. Of course, they TEND to be tennis shoes, but I guess all shoes have to suffer.

What time would be a good time for that? What if the shoes don't fit quite right, and you get a blister that could hurt for days?

It's called a Blue Law, which made things even more confusing/funny at the Kmart checkout when I was shut down for trying to buy those shoes in the early AM on a Sunday. Kmart has/had what they called a Blue Light Special in their stores, at first I thought the cashier was making a joke about me not being able to buy shoes because of the Blue Law (Kmart humor? ).

My wife has lived in SC all her life & never heard of a Blue Law until after I told her about the Kmart incident when I got home. I moved here (SC) in 2000 & soon found out that buying shoes on Sunday morning is the devils work according to the state of SC.

Who would have thought a 24 hour department store isn't allowed to sell shoes? Fortunately I wasn't shopping for a thong, I would have probably been struck down by lightning in the Kmart parking lot trying to get in my car (Run Forest... RUN!).

Who knows, they outlawed freon! They ALSO outlawed, at least in my state, arsnic treated pressurized wood, that was to create decks, etc... Why don't hey just go back to ammonia? But, you know, AMMONIA has problems TOO! Why don't they outlaw THAT! OH YEAH, it's in URINE too! Maybe they'll ration things and monitor urine output! WHO KNOWS? At this point I think the more crazy an idea, the MORE likely they will do it! I can't even use dollar coins, or anything over 1 dollar in machines! WHY!?!?!?!?!? Because it costs the sellers several hundred dollars per machine to add what they already had. WHY? Because the government SUPPOSEDLY believed that creating several different bills made it HARDER to counterfeit.

I guarantee that one CAD file that the media is currently focused on wasn't the first gun file created & defiantly won't be the last. 3D printers have been around for a few years (even open source low cost 3D printer plans) & CAD has been popular since the 1980's (millions of people have CAD skills).

That media claim that 3D printers aren't affordable for the average person is just hilarious & proves how useless the media can be.

And don't forget - get your new pressure cooker before those are banned everywhere. Of course, there are a LOT of people with pressure cookers so they might just have to have swats that go door to door ripping homes apart with the owners held at gun point so they can get all of those nasty things out of our society.

YEP! In the 50s, there were two fire extinguishers tat AREN'T around anymore! ONE, I have no idea why it is no longer around. The OTHER sounded NICE! I might not even know about it if not for the fact it was in so many movies, etc... I forget the exact formula used, but it is ALSO good for drycleaning clothes, SUPPOSEDLY, they got rid of it because it was found to be carcinogenic. They were both very unusual, by today's standards, because you basically pumped them as opposed to the compressed gas used today.

People can say what they want about religion, but THIS kind of action has really limited abilities, etc.... When I was a kid, sonic booms weren't that unusual. TODAY, they are practically front page news! It turns out that it is against the law to fly at supersonic speeds over most land in the US. Commercial jets generally fly below Mach .8.
