I understand your feelings, It is actually a little bit of a big issue for so many webmasters and honest companies and marketers online, I also wrote another article about How is google affecting your business. Here.

In the other hand there are several techniques that are still working nicely when it comes to improve your SEO and rankings. Still social media is a good and nice deep ocean of opportunities on the internet, let's not fish in one pot only.

I do all things to confuse them, not because I am doing anything wrong, just because I don't feel they need to know everything about me. A good place to start is with something like Strong VPN, and change your IP address pretty often. Then of course don't always surf logged in. I use one browser to surf logged in if needed, and the otherwise not.

Yeah Google knows when you've been sleeping and knows when you're awake. It's pretty creepy but that is the internet these days. You could always confuse them like the above poster said.

When you are a freelance writer, you do searches on a myriad of topics as you research for clients...(giggles)...I'm glad then that I leave them scratching their heads.

You are right on the apparent confusing searching pattern you are drawing, however they still can track you from your Gmail account for example or analyze your search patterns based on time of the day, weeks, months, and of course Seasons, and compare your activities to others related to people on your same area, age, sex group, professional fields, etc. In one sentence: "As long as you are using Google you are feeding the monster with golden peices of information related to one or several of your private activities which can be your work"

For example: As a writer if you are very prolific searching online but you get sick on october and stop writing/googling, etc. They might know that you are sick or not available simply based on your low or non exitent searches, also your emails and get well messages on your Google + and more vibes sent to them thru other soruces or people in your circles. Also Google could tell you where lying about being sick on October because you were pretty active online that same week or day, Uploading photos and watchig videos on youtube or writing in your blog, etc, and they can tell the opposite, despite you told everybody at work and on Facebook or G+ that you were sick, etc

Again it is al about patterns, traces and looking at the whole picture, sadly it is only Google that got the Album here. I ask again when in mankind history did a Private company hold so much information on everyone lives?

Well, I use Google search side by side with Bing search and I do have gmail as one of my email addresses, but that's about it so they don't have much of a pattern of a whole picture to go on. Perhaps they notice that I delete more mail than I read, hehe!

Anyway, I use a browser that isn't theirs and I "private window" browse as well as clean out my cookies at least twice a day. Soooo, I don't think they know as much as they'd like to.

You're wrong Terra. I just Googled you and found your net worth is $3 billion, you keep your fortune in an off shore bank owned by Allen, you live on a luxury yacht off the Florida pan handle and your favorite dessert is apple pie and French Vanilla ice cream.

  • Maybe it's cause I never lived in a world without Big Brother being all over my computer, but I think that's pretty impressive. I guess it's spooky though I'm not worried about Google knowing my likes and dislikes so much as people like hacking into my computer, spamming in, conning me, putting a virus or spyware on my computer....

I am glad that this post has started an ongoing and relevant, interesting but also Useful conversation for everyone reading regarding how to protect our privacy never mind how big or small the company watching..

I do agree with the above posters on their statements. Also let's keep in mind that Google does not own the Internet do they? There are good alternatives to almost every single Google product or service, however one that I certainly find hard to beat is Gmail, it is really cool when it comes to manage and read my daily bulk load of emails every day. lol

I just googled #16 on your list "google health" and this is what it says:
    Google Health has been discontinued

Google Health has been permanently discontinued. All data remaining in Google Health user accounts as of January 2, 2013 has been systematically destroyed, and Google is no longer able to recover any Google Health data for any user. To learn more about this announcement, see our blog post, or answers to frequently-asked questions below.
    Frequently-asked questions

    1. Is there any way to retrieve my Google Health data from Google?
No -- all remaining user data has been permanently and irrevocably deleted from the Google Health system starting on January 2, 2013. Google is no longer able to recover any Google Health data for any user.
    2. What happened to my Google Health data after January 1, 2013?
All Google Health user accounts have been deactivated, and all data stored in them has been systematically deleted from Google's systems.
    3. I want to keep tracking my health online. What can I use to do this?
There are a number of options available. For example, you can continue tracking your health data via another personal health record provider such as Microsoft(R) HealthVault(TM).
    4. Why was Google Health discontinued?
Please see our blog post for more information on this decision.

You are right, on Google health shutting down, it was decision based on optimizing their internal resources and avoiding any future issues. However that does not mean that internally Google had stopped recording and meassuring your activity een if it is Health related. It is very probably they still have an internal feature there, keeping good records of your health related messages, activities, etc Why? because the health industry is very profitable.
Think for example if I want to promote a Health related product on Google, do you think they do not have enough gathered data to show me where, who and when are Google users looking for a treatment or cure to any disease they may have? etc. - Anyway thanks for the contribution

I get kind of a weird feeling when I think about all the information collected myself and others by Google (and tons of other companies). Are we even living in a free society anymore? Is it more like a surveillance state?

Google knows more about us than it needs to. A good question to ask is: how is it even legal for them to gather that much information on private citizens? Wouldn't a government of a free country mind that (oh wait...they support that kind of thing)?

Different times we live in these days!

Okay - so Google has deleted all health data from their database.......um............

I don't see where it sayst they didn't save it OFF their database and I don't see anything said about whether it is stored offline somewhere on hardware - that is they could get to it for legal purposes if they wanted/had to but it's not something they can just click a few buttons to find. They did also not state if they have SOLD that data to someone. Deleted says nothing. I can "delete" shit loads of things but it doesn't mean I can't get to them anywhere if I want to.

I wonder if google knows what color of panties I have on right now. I also wonder how anyone that likes to do strange things by themselves when naked feels about google being omniscient? Anyone get spooked taking a bath anymore?

To me any entity that thinks it either needs or is entitled to this much info about anyone is creepy -- Perverted Uncle Arnie creepy. What the hell kind of mentality does it take to think like this?

Wait until they figure out how to make Google Glass popular.

Why yes, it does stream video of everything you see while wearing the thing back to Big G, along with GPS data. And possibly audio, although I'm not sure of that part.

    I'n MY case....

The web pages you visit: (AdSense & Doubleclick, Chrome)

There is *****NO***** way that google can know what pages I visit. Some of the pages that come up in some of my browses are NOT ones I chose to visit!

    So that is WRONG!

    The pages you like:

HERE, I have SEVERAL reasons for "thanking" things. Elsewhere, GOOD LUCK!

The blogs, newsletters and news sources you read: (Google Reader)

WOW, the picture they must get! Political? BOTH EXTREMES! I agree with NEITHER! Class? BOTH EXTREMES! I am in NEITHER! An EXTREME ZEALOT in judism, Christianity, Catholicism, atheism, and an extreme antagonist of same. I read blogs I would never have gone to if not directed there! of course, I have aliases to frustrate some of that. And I HAVE noticed others writing the same way I do. I once went to complain about a host, and found that someone else had earlier ran into the same complaint and said much what I would have, in the same way.

Your banking information: (AdSense, Google Checkout)

    AGAIN, GOOD LUCK!

The popularity of your website, blog: (Google Analytics)

Well, they once said that the most popular website of ALL was verisign, so we know how reliable THAT must be!

Who and what you're emailing: (Gmail)

If not why, then what good is it?

Your thoughts, passions, political affiliations, attitudes: (Blogger, Feedburner)

OH YEAH! A militant black far left communist that is on the far right, white, etc...., and I wish I could tell you who they think I supported in 2008.2012, and probably 2016. You'd get a kick out of it.

Everything on your PC: (Google Desktop) Well, I don't have google desktop, but it is a lot to wade through.

Your documents, spreadsheet contents: (Google Docs and Spreadsheets)

Again, I don't use those but...

    Your schedule: (Google Calendar)

Sorry, nobody knows that, not even my computers!

Your social network and interests: (Google+, Orkut, Facebook, Twitter, Digg etc.)

    Well, they can DREAM!

The social competitions you have entered: (Wildfire)

Alas, I haven't really entered any. Some ofered were adhoc and not on y computer.

Where you and your friends are: (Google Latitude, Google Mobile, Google Mobile Maps)

Yeah, they can guess that in several ways.

What you're watching on YouTube: (YouTube)

GOOD, can they tell ME? I mean they have videos cycle through, come up on resume, etc....

Your problems, interests: (Google Answers, Search)

    Problems hidden, interests obscured.

    Your medical record: (Google Health)

WOW, I have found problems with my record. I hope they never try to treat me!

Your home address, what your house looks like: (Google Maps, Streetview, AdSense, Checkout)

MAYBE! Again though, can they tell ME? I mean I move a LOT!

Your mobile number: (Google Mobile, Gmail, Google+)

WOW, can they update everyone? Half the places that I do business with haven't updated, etc....

The sound of your voice: (Google Talk, Hangouts)

Yeah, I DID think about that. But THEY would have a hard time finding that for ME.

What you, your friends and family look like: (Picasa, Google+)

They may have a problem with my IMMEDIATE family, and me!

    Your purchases, considerations: (Google Search)

NOPE! I'm looking for a new computer. Considerations range from a board costing about $25 to a full blown system for maybe $25,000!

What your business is about: (AdWords Keywords)

Naw, that was ALWAYS a problem. The first official company I started said it was about anything.

Your travel, past and planned: (Google Places, Google Flights)

WOW, can they tell delta? Maybe they should have told northwest!

What matters to you: (Google Alerts)

    They can DREAM!

    Your dining interests: (Zagat)

I don't often use it and still base things on several criteria.

And that's even before they start building intelligent and automated models that mix and match the data, correlate your information and left traces with other people's data, and come to conclusions about the likelihood that you will behave in certain ways in response to specific circumstances. Oh, and they will provide your complete profile to anyone in law enforcement for around $25. -Delete cookies. Big Brother IS Watching.
INTELLIGENT? That is a LAUGH! They can't even provide 1 HUNDREDTH of that intelligence on SEARCHING!

So what is google supposed to do now? I mean it CAN'T be searching! You ever try searching in GMAIL? How about INTELLIGENT searches in google? MAN, they decided to dispense with a simple methodology that may be THOUSANDS of years old and get rid of QUOTES!

Oh well, what do I expect. People that KNEW me didn't know me that well. and those that claim to have such profiles down to a science obviously DON'T! EVEN if they could read my mind! They would probably make the SAME istake that Hector Poole made on "penny for your thoughts" on the twilight zone when he heard the guy plotting a fantasy bank theft. Of course, I don't plan such things out in a way that I think would be meaningful to others if they saw it in a movie. It wouldn't be in a language.

It is good to see all the passion that you added to your long broken post on this thread, however assumptions are not exactly what we are looking for with this post. I am led to believe you are not a programmer are you??

Computers can do things in our days that were simply impossible years ago, the laptop that I am using now right across the pool can do things that we never dreamed possible like connecting and talking with people in the other side of the world. Do you believe the big corporations are sitting on the same technology we are??? They are not, their budgets allow them to track, analyze and save information that maybe we all coonsider impossible to do, however you would be surprised to see what a group of 200 best of the world Web programmers can achieve in a couple years of non stop work... - Well thats is only one of Google offices, staff.

It is not a matter of believing, it is a matter of understanding, the only objective of this post was to create conversation and I am happy that we are achieving that.

      Regards

Actually, I AM a programmer! I predicted many things which are as I predicted decades ago.

Computers can do things in our days that were simply impossible years ago, the laptop that I am using now right across the pool can do things that we never dreamed possible like connecting and talking with people in the other side of the world.
I used a computer in the late 1970s that could do THAT! SO WHAT!?!?!?!? I believe the technology was from the late 1960s, and based on technology from like the late 1950s! And WHEN did they first start thinking about it? Well, one VERY famous film, that I even saw one version of, talked about ROBOTS that were VERY human, and sentient, It was a SILENT MOVIE. But HEY, they had things that seemed computer like, and EVEN world wide communication that predates the first recognized computer network.

Do you believe the big corporations are sitting on the same technology we are???
YEP, because I have been at a couple dozen of them. One is considered by many to be THE leader in networking. I'm fairly certain I understand the current state of the art.

They are not, their budgets allow them to track, analyze and save information that maybe we all consider impossible to do, however you would be surprised to see what a group of 200 best of the world Web programmers can achieve in a couple years of non stop work... - Well thats is only one of Google offices, staff.
And yet they CAN'T make a search engine! HECK, I started doing well with the binary operators and quotes, and refining that, and they undo everything!

It is not a matter of believing, it is a matter of understanding, the only objective of this post was to create conversation and I am happy that we are achieving that.
I am NOT saying that they can't collect a lot of info. CLEARLY they can! I am NOT saying they can't run algorithms against that and divine by their ARBITRARY, STUPID, and MADE UP, algorithms that something is, BY THEIR RECKONING, true.

As I said, one might figure I am white/black, communist/(FAR RIGHT), atheist/zealot, and even that I LOVE one that I LOATH. You would have as much luck judging me by that as you would by judging me by the email I get. HECK, I SAY I am white. AM I? Many HAVE lied about their race. I may not even be MALE. As for my age? Over 80% of the systems I have been on have my wrong birthdate.

What I am saying is that it is so much garbage. HECK, I heard how a company called Fair Issac comes up with their "FICO" score, and IT is stupid. Even seemingly factual data is faulty going in. How can you expect to get value coming out? Of course, they make dumb and contrary assumptions.

When they spoke of jewel being a 40yo loner with nails and fertilizer, and how he MUST have been a bomber and have Munchhausen syndrome, I got a kick out of it and thought MAN, they could think the same about me! I have books that can be looked at as VERY suspicious. I got the anarchist cookbook AFTER all I knew seemed to get it, and bought a book on WWI munitions written by the USNAVY, at a book sale a library had. Then again, you would have to look at my books HARD to find them among all the books on languages(spoken and computer), hardware(electronic and computer), software, construction, etc....

ANYWAY, I am SICK of hearing all the stupid assumptions. Many feel that they must only talk with you 2 seconds to hear your life story. AMAZING, I may say a truthful tidbt they will ignore, and they will readily believe one that knows NOTHING about me. I once could have caught a criminal, and gotten praise from many. I DIDN'T! WHY? Because the beneficiaries of the theft could then declare that I DID purchase whatever. My BIGGEST asset in the debate was that they knew absolutely NOTHING about me. I had to trust the POLICE that couldn't even keep the great evidence I gave them, let alone realize its value. They claimed it got lost in the mail when I HAND DELIVERED it to them at the station!

Very interesting fact. Great share. And the most eye catching lines I liked is : " Oh, and they will provide your complete profile to anyone in law enforcement for around $25". If this is the real scenario then your awareness points you have mentioned is a sign of an alert which must be taken care of to secure privacy.

About 50. WHY? Were you going to call me an old fogy because I once thought about getting a COSMAC ELF? HEY, I once wrote a term paper on COSMOS! Or maybe because my first commercial computer was an APPLE II+, purchased when a little company called IBM was still LAUGHING at the prospect! Or that I once considered a 40 pin dip LARGE, and a 64 pin one HUGE! One of these days, I have GOT to look at the 100s of balls many BGAs have today. Yeah, I have been in the industry over 30 years, professionally, and almost 10 years prior to that.

For much of that time, people made WILD claims about what would happen 20-30 years ago, and you know what? They STILL haven't happened! Heck, check out the thread about googles autocomplete! Their search engine does a LOT of stuff! A LOT! It can be NICE. Pity it dispenses with reason, throws out what is likely close info, and tries to build what it never really can. People have to stick with simple sites, or go through a lot of needless work to work around it. And they can't get past those tricks other "search engines" play, They can't determine how to assemble words in a non offending manner. In short, the AI really is NOT intelligent.

Are there cameras around? HECK YEAH! Is there a lot of info around? HECK YEAH! Can they store it all? About a year ago, I heard of one company that was selling database systems that went up to over 5PT! In case you don't know, that is 5000TB or about 5 MILLION GB. Do they have fast processors? HECK YEAH! But what is the average IQ of a computer, even with AI? ZERO! Do they REALLY understand the mind? NOPE! I had a friend that worked for JPL. The FBI PERSONALLY interviewed friends and neighbors. WHY did they do that if a computer could simply figure it out?

I will have to leave this conversation there dear "seasoned" the whole point of this conversation was to increase our knowledge and make a call for one minute or two of personal reflection. I think everybody who read this this thread has achieved that. I am moving forward with my Life and posts..

    A lovely day for everyone!
