Can somebody tell me how to change the double spacing between sentences in Word 2003?
I have used "help" and Google and nothing matches what I have currently so am stuck on something that seems simple.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Don't know if yours has it, but on the toolbar there is a tool in the formatting section that has up and down arrows to the left and then some lines to the left.

Click on that and select 1. Voila.

If you don't have that on your tool bar go to the View menu and select toolbars. From there select Formatting" and the toolbar will appear.

Alternatively, you can go to the Tools menu, then select Customise. Select the Commands tab and select Formatting. Scroll down the bottom and click on "Line Spacing" (it's the second last option). You can drag that to your toolbar. Once it's on there, select 1. Voila.

I have that but it is already set to 1 and yet I still have the problem. It is weird. I also tried the other way but same result.

    Hi Laurence

Are you highlighting the text in question first?

See here Adjust the line spacing between text or paragraphs - Word - Office.com

      w 2003 i always did it this way: select text > right-click > paragraph > indents and spacing > adjust w "line-spacing" drop-down

      hope that helps

I tried that and it already says single spacing too so this is really frustrating because it seems everything that can be done won't work. Maybe I have to do it all manually which is a huge pain for a 148 page book but I will. Thanks anyway guys and gals.

interesting. perhaps pm me a snippet or paragraph or just something formatted the same way and let me take a look. used word 2003 to write a ton of apa-formatted papers in grad school and it never stumped me. wouldn't mind having a go at it

glad i could help. misread your question at first, thought you were saying there was an extra space between each line...my bad.

in case anyone else has the same issue, to quickly modify the entire doc w/o having to go through every line manually, go: edit > find > replace. In Find what: type ".. " and in Replace with: type ". ", both without quotes, then hit Replace all. This will replace all of the periods followed by 2 spaces (period key, space-bar, space-bar), with a period followed by one space (period key, space-bar).

That's what I thought as well, hence my "help".

        Glad it's fixed now.
