I feel like I've seen all the ones worth mentioning!

I love a good and unexpected twist!

- Saw (the first one)
- Shutter Island
- The Game
- Oldboy
- Unusual Suspects
- Memento
- The Prestige
- The Illusionist
- The Others
- The Sixth Sense

Any recommendations?!

If you can find it, try "A Very British Coup" and "7 Days In May".

      Arrrmmmm, what about.....

      • The day the Earth Cought Fire - English fiim - and a pretty interesting storeyline.

I only mention it since you have probably seen most of the modern ones, and this movie is relatively buried.

The Day the Earth Caught Fire (1961) - IMDb

      Shane

There was a time machine type, movie, with a time window at a university. They step forward 100 years, into the future, (etc, couldn't find the title, but the acting, was pretty lame.

But the storeyline, is pretty cool, especially including the ending, someone else here might be able to dig it up!

If you can get past the crap acting from one of the scientists, it is well worth a watch!

And if anyone wants to find it, in involves 3 scientists all up, one a blonde woman.

Oh My God! How could I have forgotten The Cube and Mulholland Drive? Primer was interesting too.

Yeah, don't watch Mulholland Drive alone in the dark. Excellent crafting of a disturbing movie.

I'm not normally into those kinds of movies, but I'd have to say that "The Shining" freaked me out more than any other movie I've seen (although it probably didn't help that I was a kid when I saw it)!

I'm not sure if this exactly fits your criteria, but L.A. Confidential (1997) with Kevin Spacey, Guy Pearce, and Russell Crowe, is an unflinching look at one honest cop awash in a sea of corruption. Never a dull moment.

Ok, l have dug some oldies, but goodies...

      • Wall Street, Money Never Sleeps - plenty of good twists.

      • Damnation Alley

      • The Time Travellers - 1964 was the one l couldn't find, and as said before, great ending, and interesting storyline, with the bad acting scientist, and stupid character development.

      In the Mouth of Madness

Don't watch it alone, or while you are high.

Event Horizon is another one. Sam Neal is a great actor. Every time I see him, I think of James Mason.

of course, The Exorcist was, at the time the scariest movie ever made. The Exorcist 111 was also quite good. Again, don't wath them alone at night.

The first 3 are great...haven't seen Exorcist III. I also like Sam Neal as an actor. Good reminders of a couple movies I haven't seen in awhile.

Have to say I absolutely hated Saw. Like you are going to be in a room with a body for hours and hours, and not notice that it's breathing. The guy had to breath. Never been a fan of intricate deaths or torture anyway, but after that I dropped the series and never watched any of the others.

Maybe it's because I'm older. Gore doesn't scare me. I think of it as lazy writing.
Graphic torture doesn't bother me (In the movies).

What scares me is a movie that makes you feel like you are part of it. In The Mouth Of Madness made me feel like the hero was in a movie, and then watched himself in the movie.

A picture that is just a little off can do it. Things that look almost normal but are impossible. It's the stuff of nightmares.

It bypasses my rational brain and hits me in my Hippocampus. Like a scene where someone is talking, but they never stop smiling, and they never blink.

Imagine if you were reading a book and suddenly, it mentioned your name as the person reading the book, and also what time it was at that moment. If that happened to me, I might never recover.

        Yep.
The Mouth of Madness may keep you awake at night.

        Event Horizon is another.

The Exorcist may be the scariest/creepiest movie I ever saw.

Cube was very original. SHOW US YOU HAVE SOME BACKBONE, AND JUMP IN THE SUSHI MACHINE.

And someone mentioned Watership Down, that's great. The book is one I read almost every year in Vancouver, but haven't read since I moved to NC. The film is quite faithful and well animated.

        Ghost Ship was formulaic...but...

A few friends and I started it up and the opening credits rolled. People were dancing in fine clothes on the deck. Servants whirled around gently. "Ghost Ship" a fancy pink title swirled across the screen. We looked at one another, rolled our eyes and figured we'd rented the wrong movie.

We turned it off and watched the NHL finals.

After the game was over, we resumed the film right where we'd left it. A deck line snapped. Everyone dancing got cut in half at the waist. OMG. We watched the rest of the film.

I'm actually very picky as well.. I can't stand older movies if they have horrible audio and sound effects, which most do.

I recommend you to watch The Inception or The Matrix. These two movies are quite good.

You may also want to watch Echelon Conspiracy, it is a decent movie too.

Jacob's Ladder is my favourite, although it's from the 90s, but don't let that deter you! There is also an element of truth to it, which makes it even more weird.
