It's funny the path we take, the things we get interested in. When I was in high school I worked on the school newspaper. I had this great idea to write album reviews. So I just reviewed a bunch of albums I had--the problem was they were 6 months old or more.

The editor said, "Hey, nice reviews. Uh, can you review some music that is actually new." They thought I was crazy anyway because I had long hair.

When I was 16, I decided to expand to concert reviews. I had the great idea I should get backstage and interview the bands. How did I do that? I called the promoters and asked if I could get a press pass backstage to interview the bands, haha. It worked.

Keep in mind it was the late 70s--much harder to get backstage now with all the security.

So I took my "piano-keys" style cassette recorder backstage to all the concerts. At 16, I interviewed Sabbath, Boston, KISS, REO Speedwagon, Bob Seger and many more. The scene was very much like the movie, "Almost Famous." Lots of rock chicks and adult cigarettes everywhere.

Very laid back. Nobody cared that I was 16. Heck, the rock stars were not that much older.

My parents had to pick me up! They didn't know Black Sabbath from a hole in the wall.

"How was your concert, son?"

"It was great, I interviewed Ozzy Osborne."

"That's nice, son, what's Mr. Osborne like?"

Sounds like a good time. The real important question now is do you still have the tapes??

It's always fun to meet rock stars. When I was growing up in HS we had a lot of them around my area that ended up getting famous. They were the guys next door so while it's fun to say I knew this guy and dated that guy -- they weren't really accessible after they got known. You got lucky and met them AFTER they were famous.

OMG that's an awesome story, 16 year old guys would die nowadays to get the chance to interview any of those bands. Black Sabbath is coming to my city in a few months actually, and I'm going to see them lol

I would love to have do0ne that as a kid. It sounds like a lot of fun and where my interest lands. The "how" you can wonder about until you think yourself out of trying it. It's awesome you just took a chance and made some calls which made it happen

Wouldn't mind interviewing some of today's stars

Sounds like a lot of fun, especially for a 16 year old!

I'm beyond jealous. I have seen Sabbath, Boston, Kiss, and just about every big name in hard rock you can think from the 70's and 80's, but the few times I was around the back stage area, I had to keep moving and never got to speak with any of the bands. Very cool that you were able to pull that off!
