I wanted to try the Windows 7 beta, but I couldn't get a chance to download it since the Microsoft servers were always at maximum capacity for the downloads.

It's from Microsoft, so how much do you think I trust it?

I think it's a pretty good operating system overall. I have the 32 bit version running without any lag or issues on a 4 year old laptop, so I'm sure it will run nicely on up to date computers when it comes out.

There really isn't much to say cause you either love or hate windows at this point.

      Um, you LOVE IT!?

I downloaded but, since I just luv XP(NOT) I'm reluctant to add to my exemplary MS "user experience" stress level.
I don't think the pacemakers batteries could handle the overload.
I've been fined too often already for sailing the PC off my porch once a week.

I downloaded Windows 7 from a torrent site, but the installation too hours to complete.

I'm waiting for Windows 7 RC, that's coming out today on their homepage...

It shouldn't take more than 30 minutes or so to install so I don't know what the deal was with all that.

But you are right. A newer version is out this week so it doesn't matter.

I think the installation files became corrupted. I burned an entire DVD from the ISO file.

The first Windows 7 RC is coming out today. Few hours remaining...

Can one install it directly over Vista Home or over XP and XP Pro (the systems that I run on my three pcs), or does one have to remove the existing OS and perform a completely fresh install?

          Thanks and Regards,
          Jeff Henshaw.

            Yes. You can.
Refer to official instructions from Microsoft.

Thanks very much, I appreciate your reply.

Does it work properly though? I should have been clearer in my post. I would like feed back from anyone who has done this and successfully used the new OS without problems after installing 'over' an existing MS OS.

My experiences in the past have not been good when I update a new MS OS onto a machine with an earlier OS still in place.

              Jeff.

Get a free program called VirtualBox and you can run Windows 7 on a virtual machine inside your current operating system without having to remove, reformat, or partition your drives.

It's always a good idea to backup everything and re-install any operating system from scratch. Since you have 3 computers, backing up would not be any problem for you.

You can also use Microsoft Virtual PC. It'll emulate and run an operating system, without touching any settings on an existing OS installation.

      Thanks.

Virtual PC is something that I have always been reluctant to use, due to some earlier horror stories that I was informed of. Nevertheless, times and things change, so thanks for bringing it back to my attention.

      Regards,
      Jeff.

Iv'e been using it for a few months now and I like it it's fast and makes alot of tasks alot easier before that I was running Linux on my PC as I got tired of windows (I still have xp on my labtop). Overall I might get it when it comes out as it's already pretty stable as a beta.

vista was so dire that I never want to use a future OS from M$ again. XP is still a good OS but I use OS X mainly.

I never try this one yet. Torrents are full of Windows 7 now. You can get it there or rapidshare. I'm using XP and Vista and happy with it. My guess for Win 7 is that we need tons of RAM. Currently, my Vista is running on 4GB RAM (x64 bit fammily). 2GB is on average speed. Maybe you need latest i7 processor for Windows 7.

It doesn't need that much ram really.

I have a 5 year old laptop with 1.5 gigs of ram and run windows 7 in a virtual machine with 512 meg of ram and it runs fine.

It actually uses less resources than vista currently is using by far.

If someone has a problem running windows 7 on a machine newer than my 5 year old laptop, then it's a user issue.

      lol..no way..

      You dont need i7.

I am running Win 7 on two of my computers.

One from HP, with just 1GB DDR2 Ram and Intel 2.2Ghz DC2 and it is running fine. Just like XP.

Another one is Dell Studio XPS 1640 laptop with 3GB DDR3 RAM and 2.53 DC2 and it is running fast like hell..Fastest OS I have ever used.

      Shakul

P.s What I really liked is the superbar, increased speed, homegroup, and (just 20 minutes) to install...

Darrn! I feel like a grandmother! I've just gotten adjusted to windows vista 64 bit and now Windows 7 takes center stage! I have heard a lot of good feedback about the operating systema and I cant wait for it to become truly public and have more hardware update their drivers and such.

Windows 7 is not the memory hog that Vista is, it'll run quite well on 2gb of ram. I like i better than XP or vista (I'm running it on my 64bit laptop). Ran various linux versions for years then got tired of a lack of apps I wanted so switched back to MS and haven't looked back. My systems are stable and software is readily available and, most importantly for me, I can ask the actual people who created it for help when/if I have questions.
I expect to soon have 7 running on all three of my computers.

    My 2.9 cents

Virtual PC will not show you real power of any OS. I mean, you will not be able to enjoy the speed.

Just make a partition and then install Win 7 on it and you will be able to dual boot.

Dont you find difficulties with Linux..Like last time, I simply forced shutdown the system and then when I run it, it wasnt even booting.

That's a tough one. Maybe it didn't install correctly.

Pick like 3 or 4 distributions to play around with and just use the live cds and boot into the OS and play around with each one of them. They should work in that mode. Then if you wish to install do so.
