I am looking after my landlady's dog. Everything was apparently normal until just a half hour ago.

I was thinking about the possibility of reincarnation and said Marietta! The dog's name really is Maya.

I just said "do you know the name Marietta"? The dog went APE! I thought, "what does it mean when the dang dog goes ape over a sister of mine that was alive until July last year? I mean, the poor pooch doesn't even KNOW she existed. She just jumped around and went bonkers over when I said Do You Know The Name Marietta?

What do you think?

Hey, I think when we lose a loved one sometimes we wish they were back so badly (cos we loved them so much) that we think of things that comfort us like reincarnation. For reincarnation though, I always thought that if the animal can understand what we're saying they would be able to show it.

Like you could say "If you're a reincarnation of someone, go stand on the table" and they would do it. Plus if they had a human mind, they wouldn't be sitting around all day, they would probably sneak into the cinemas and watch movies all day lol.

Not sure why the dog went crazy, they do that sometimes. Anyway, sorry to hear about your sister.

Dogs react to your tone of voice. I can ask my dog "do you like spinach" and as long as my voice goes up at the end she'll get all excited.

She's conditioned to do that because I use the same tone when I say "do you want a treat?" or "do you want a chewie" or "do you want to do for a walk".

The dog identifies the tone of a question with "something good's going to happen".

Sometimes. Sometimes they know what you are saying. If you asked any of my rotties anything - if they didn't know what you were saying they'd do the RCA dog head crank - but that's how I raised them (according to my ebook "Smart Beyond Obedience" - which I think you've read).

Now Ricky, on the other hand, has only learned a lot of the language he knows since he met me - and was already old as dirt at that time, and he just gets off on the tones. I can tell him all sorts of evil crap and as long as I tuck it into high pitched baby talk, it will elicit wags and grins - maybe if he were younger, a little prancing, too, but at 15 he's over that one.

As far as the OP's dog experience. I think you are doing some wishful thinking there, guy. If a dog stands and barks and growls at something you can't see in a corner of a room, then ya might want to wonder about things a tad esoteric.

A friends Rottweiler starts barking and "going crazy" when you ask him "Is your Mom a Poodle?".

As Kay said, it's something in the tone of voice that the dog recognizes and associates with some kind of reward such as play time, a trip to the park or a belly rub or a treat...

I wouldn't appreciate that question either.

Sometimes they know what you are saying.
Reminded me of Meagan - a dog rescued from the shelter that I had for about 10 years. She was half Springer Spaniel and half Sheltie and a brainiac dog.

You could say medicine, pill, doctor.....or spell those words where she could hear you. She would quietly stand up an "mosey over" along the side the room, down the hall at a sedate pace...and then run like hell to hide under the bed.

If you said "go for a walk" she would run to the closet and get her leash and bring it to you. If you didn't go immediately she'd follow you around the house carrying her leash.

If you said "treat" or "doggie biscuit" and didn't give one to her immediately, she'd start going through her bag of tricks in front of you to earn a treat. She'd sit and wait, then lay down and roll over, then get back up and fall down to play "dead dog"...then spin in circles.

And once you tell them something that they want to hear...they won't forget. All of mine would just nag, nag, nag until you did what you told them they were going to do. Even Ricky is picking up on this one, but doesn't nag - he just pouts. People would sometimes tease mine about walk or swim..........and they would end up being forced to go with us since they teased the dog and my guys never let up once they were told they were going to do something they really wanted to do. I don't believe in teasing a dog - it's confusing to them and I don't want to ruin an education I really put effort into. I like a smart dog.

Serious, though - I've gotten hurt telling my guys they were going to do something and not getting around to it quick enough for them -- I've been smacked in the face with my shoes, lashed with leashes. I never say much until I'm ready to go. Saves me skin.

I just wanted to say, I am sorry for your loss. I lost my sister in 2005, and I have not felt whole since then.
    Hugs.

I'm thinking that maybe the dog sensed someone else in the room and went nuts.
