    taskemann,

I almost said the same as David. I ALMOST wished you the same, etc... but technically norway broke off from a larger part of scandinavia, and I didn't know your position on that. I am not even sure about your position on that. Denmark as I recall, for example, may cherish their scandinavian roots, but consider themselves to be european.

Broke away from Scandinavia? Nooo. Norway will always be a part of Scandinavia. All Swedes, Danes and Norses love eachother. But Norway isn't a part of EU. Maybe that's what you meant? :p

As far as I know, Scandinavia is a geographical rather a political designation, so short of earth changes it would be hard for you to break away from it

That would be one heck of a earthquake!

But I think good ol' Steve meant that it had broken away in a political way.

It is hard to explain, but some would simply rather be identfied another way. I mean the languages(at least danish, norwegian, and swedish) are somewhat unique from other languages. ALL relish their history. To try to leave all vestiges of their roots would be a wholesale change. Maybe it can kind of be explained by what my danish aunt and uncle one time said. I could call this island(spelled phonetically since I can't type the characters on this keyboard) kewbenhoun(taken as danish and perhaps scandinavia). I could call it kopenhaygen(taken as non germanic, and non danish). I should NOT call it kopenhahgen(taken as germanic), because they don't like the germans. ALL are considered proper names that may be understood by ALL danish people. Likewise, I guess Danish would rather be called european.

I NEVER said you "broke away from scandinavia" Scandinavia I believe USED to be one country. It ALL has much the same culture, history, etc... And is proud of it. But apparently norway was together with sweden, and separated in I guess 1905. To this day, MOST scandinavian languages are even VERY close to one another. Your alphabets aren't even the same, but most of it is understandable.

Still, do norwegians prefer being called europeans, or scandinavians? Of course they ARE all part of the european continent, and treated as such.

Jimmy, as an American citizen, I'm using my authority to (un)officially deputize you and grant you the authority to celebrate Independence Day.

Now go grab a twelve pack of American beer, some bottle rockets, some gauze and a box of bandages and get to work. You know what, make it a case of beer. Be really American today.

They have Bud at my local grocery store. Maybe I'll grab a crate, go home, throw a turkey into the oven and sing 'The Star-Spangled Banner' while I watch some good ol' Western movies

Skip the turkey. Wrong holiday. Today is for burgers, hot dogs, brisket and ribs. Or you could pound down a can of that fermented herring you guys eat. (I may ask you to send me some of that stuff someday.)

OK, OK, I misquoted. I said technically in the first quote though. ALSO, I tried to clarify it in ralation to the danish position.

          Haha. You mean Surströmming? :p

Note the kid who says "Daddy! I want to go home!"

It's the Swedes who eat that. But my dad used to make it by himself before in 3 gallon steel buckets. That stuff was really horrifying once opened.
