Talk about a racket, DC is trying to force Walmart to pay employees a 50% increase on their min. wage salary. This only pertains to mega money business like big box retailers. This means the folks getting paid min. wage & working for mom & pop stores are getting screwed over massively considering Walmart & other big box retailer employees would start out at a min. pay rate that's more income per paycheck.

Even If Walmart stays, they would literally be forced to crush mom & pop stores when the small stores employees all run to Walmart for higher pay.

Walmart has threatened to not build 3 new stores & halt construction on 3 stores currently being built.

Surely this illegal, forcing select business to pay higher wages than the state/federal min. wage pay rate.

There was a FEDERAL law passed about 150 years ago that was even through the supreme court. It says that price fixing, which is really what they will effectively be doing, is ILLEGAL!

Sherman Antitrust Act - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And yeah, a minimum wage is supposed to be a MINIMUM WAGE!

You CAN'T force a large company to pay more because it will hurt THEM, the communities, and future hiring. FURTHER, people will want to work for only THAT company, and OTHER companies will be FORCED to pay more, driving up the cost which wll lead to inflation AND, in the end, help NOBODY!

Want proof? OK! HERE! Let's say the minimum wage were $4.00. OK, OK, it is like DOUBLE that, but Bear with me, ok? OK, 4*2040(MINIMUM STANDARD US WEEK)=$8160. YIKES! That is a FORTUNE! That is 5.35 TIMES what the average person makes!!!!! OH YEAH, that's right! I'm not postulating a theory about what MIGHT happen. I am merely stating known fact of history that happens even TODAY. You see, the average person ON MINIMUM WAGE TODAY makes about TEN times what the average person(INCLUDING engineers, etc....) in the US in 1934 made.

IMAGINE! TEN TIMES! That is like getting paid $450,000 today! Is THAT considered poor?

If we are going to have a minimum wage, we should ask: a minimum for what? What are we trying to accomplish?

$8 for 2000 hours per year, assuming one can get 2000 hours and not part-time work because of forced health insurance, is only $16,000. That is not enough to live on, and certainly not enough for a family.

So what is the point? Why have a minimum of $8 per hour? If we have a poverty standard that X dollars is the poverty level, then shouldn't a minimum wage at least get you to poverty?

Hmmm. Turns out the poverty level for one person is $11,490. So the minimum wage does get someone out of poverty.

Perhaps the better question is: does anyone believe someone making $11,491 per year is not in poverty?

That is not enough to live on, and certainly not enough for a family.
Which is why families have two wage earners and also 'moonlight' - and why families at that $8 wage qualify for food stamps and ADC and other benefits that people at $20k a year pay for themselves.

Average income in D.C. is about the highest in the U.S. due to the type of residents there (pols, lobbyists, business headquarters, embassy personnel, etc).

It's been posted the average WM worker earns over $12/hr so this change would take new workers and those who don't work well enough to qualify for a raise to the level of those who worked their way up.

It was pretty dumb to pass this before the WM stores were built - now they won't be built. It's a big world and WM doesn't have to go to D.C. Does that really help people who desperately need work?

That's just it, what purpose does min. wage serve If it's no longer valid for select business?

If they raised the min. pay (not state min. wage) for Walmart now, that means they can continue raising the min. Walmart pay anytime & as often as they want.

If I was Walmart I would make it simple for DC & do like Amazon, see ya later & I'm taking the millions in tax money with me... I would shut down all the DC area stores, lol.

BESIDES, the minimum wage jobs were mostly for KIDS! And MANY could easily be replaced today. HECK, I HATED the telephone game when I was a little kid, and even MORE now! They could get rid of the telephone game, have better turn around, and have happier customers for LESS! Of course, fewer people would be hired!
