Just got called "clueless" by a warrior trying to "trade" me 20 million email addresses

There is a warrior (who will remain anonymous) who PM'd me offering to "trade" me 20 million "legit" coreg email leads if I give him my wso.

I am including our conversation below (identity of the other party removed) for your enjoyment... it should be read from the bottom up.

Oh, and even if I was wrong and it was legit to spam 20 million email addresses I don't want to be right

Next time you message a business owner don't try and pawn off a spam list pretending its coreg

No problem, but to set the record straight just so you know, NO this is not a spam list. I assume you have never heard the term "coregistration". I won't bore you but companies like Hotmail and USA Today make millions renting their coregistration list to companies who want to LEGALLY market to strangers. I agree with you 100% in that a harvested list is trash and not worth the time to mail and will eventually lead to problems. This is not that. My reply is in no way an effort to change your mind (really), I just wanted to reply back and set correct your misunderstanding of the difference between spamming and legal permission based coregistation email marketing.

Hi there. I'm interested in your wso but I just lost my primary client so I thought I'd check with you to see if you might be interested in a trade. I have genuine fresh email optins including their name, email, address, date opted in and their ip. I have Sept, Oct, Nov, Dec, Jan, Feb, Mar and April 2009 optins which have over 20 million optin records in CSV format. If you were to buy these they'd cost you over $2000.

I have full rights to sell (or trade) these optin records. Might you consider a trade? I know the source for these leads and these are very very high quality. One of my friends is a long time lead broker. I have been reselling his leads for several years without as much as a single complaint. I also actively mail out over 1 million a month myself using these same leads.

I'm sure his list isn't coreg but you are incorrect about a few things.

That depends on the terms when opted in. Some big players state they can sell or trade the emails.

I have also purchased from major online retailers and when I created my account, there was a check box giving them permission to share my details with 3rd parties. They also had another that allowed them to email me on the behalf of 3rd parties.

As far as the list, it can be mailed to - legally - depending on how the leads where received. They just need to follow local, state and federal laws.

The online industry would consider it spam though and I'm sure he would lose his host, domain, etc.

"Coreg" is where an optin lead is offered additional options for opting into multiple lists. This case the guy was selling email leads... it has nothing to do with "coreg."

That is different than a privacy policy where the person agrees that their email address can be sold.

The guy was pretending to offer a "coreg" list for me to buy but in order for it to be "coreg" they would have had to optin specifically to my list... generally coreg offers are "oh by the way would you like to also optin to ____, ____, and ____?

As far as the list, it can be mailed to - legally - depending on how the leads where received.

Actually it depends entirely on the privacy policy and what the lead agreed to when they opted in... and since these are just bulk email leads verifying that for 20 million is a bit of a strech ;-)

Also in some cases website policies have been found to be unconscionable and the companies selling peoples email info found legally liable.

Anyone thinking that its safe to accept such a list and mail it would definitely need to get their head checked...

Just think how friendly this list of 20 million email leads is which is being sold over and over and over.

You can definitely optin to have your info sold... but that is not coreg.

No. A coreg list can also have a privacy policy that says the emails can be traded, sold, givenaway, etc.

All properly ran coreg system should provide a privacy policy and tos just like a "normal" opt-in.

I know. Thats why I included the bit about his not being one. If *anyone* has a true coreg optin of 20 million emails, all verified, I'll eat a brussel sprouts.

I know. You have to make 100% certain that people know and cant use any "trickery"

Very true. But some people don't know what can and can't be done. Much less what they need to do if they even try and use such lists.

It *can* be. It depends on how it's being ran.

Anyone could very easily setup a coreg site/service and make it part of the terms. *Normally* they don't but they could.

Most of them dont say anything besides the typical "we respect your privacy" BS. Much less mention the IP, date, etc. will be passed along.
