Avira, AVG or Avast I have found are the best 3 free anti virus software for PC's. All 3 will do the trick.

AVG for the win! It provides great security software against any virus. So you better try it!

Having wasted hours and hours reinstalling McAfee because it kept turning itself off and then telling me I was unprotected, I gave up.

I now have Avast and the result is like having an extra 2 gig of ram!

I use Avast free. Free Avira lacks essential features.
AVG8 just insinuated itself everywhere and used a lot of resources.

Knowlegeable friends tend to use Avast free or ESET nod32 paid.
Avast usually updates twice a day and is quite effective once you
have explored its unusual "movie player" interface and setup your
options .... fairly easy-peasy after that and *very* thorough on
      maximum settings.

If you want to uninstall it too, I recommand Perfect Uninstaller.
With which, you not only can uninstall Norton, but also many other programs

    Hi Sambitha,

My very favorite is AVG - it's FREE I have not used the Symantec line in years as my computer techie guy advised against it. Funny thing (actually an awesome thing) once I got the Symantec stuff off of my computer, I never had another virus or crash. Woo Hoo! Not sure what those products may have been doing to cause all out system crashes , but never had any issues in about 4+ years now with the AVG. I also tried AVAST, which is another goodie. Good luck on choosing.

I used to use norton as well but it slowed my computer down as well. I now use NOD32 and I really like it. It doesn't effect my speed, its not too expensive, and it works really well

I use Mcafee on my desktop, Norton on my laptop.

Only problem I've ever had was with updating my subscription to Mcafee. It took me two evenings to reinstall. Their chat support wasn't much help either - had to figure it out myself. Fine now its running, though.
