This evening's magnitude 6.5 earthquake released energy equivalent to 100 nuclear bombs of the size which devastated Hiroshima, scientists say.
YEAH! I survived a GIGATON blast! WOW! Oh yeah, I don't think I named them, so I will just give them the starfish name. Sorry charlys! You see my fish ended up being out of water, and died.

ok, 100 nuclear bombs? HOW do they figure? I mean, YEAH, if it strikes DIRECTLY in a town, and the buildings aren't built right, it CAN destroy a town, but it still isn't close to nagasaki or hiroshima.

BTW, for the record, Japan DOES get some BIG earthquakes. The fukushima disaster, ironically, was caused by one. I don't know if it was directly because of the earthquake, or the tsunami created by it, or BOTH, but it WAS caused by the earthquake in any event.

Of course, THAT was an earthquake of 9.0 which I believe is about 50 times the size of a 7.5. It is 100 times the size of a 7.0. I never heard them compare the bomb to an earthquake.

Yeah, Victoria, AU, went through another small one, a week or so ago!

It didn't make the news, and the epicenter is about a 10 minute drive from where l live.

I was going to sleep, at about 4.04 am and heard a loud rumbling from underground, it abruptly ended, with the shaking of all the dead leaves on the trees, but since l was in bed, l didn't feel the ground shake!

B**** scary for you guys after what you went through, glad you are ok!

This is the only earthquake I have experienced in my lifetime. Even thought it was comparatively small, it is something I will never forget.

6.5 -- OUCH. Beautiful country, but located on some techtonic plate boundaries. You'll never find anywhere without tradeoffs. Quakes are NZ tradeoff for paradise.

BTW - my condolences to anyone negatively affected by this one.

Are those nukes 20 kilotons, or 20 megatons? There's a HUGE difference there.
