Does anyone do sports betting on the side? I have tried a couple of times and failed completely :p . I'm wondering if anyone has some helpful book recommendations or some articles to read?

From what research I have done, there are full time sports bettors, so it seems to be a lot like poker in that sense.

I found an entrepreneur site that has a couple of articles on it :

They label it "sports investing"

Sports Investing - novumdives.com : novumdives.com
Sports Investing Part 2 - novumdives.com : novumdives.com

But 99% of the lingo and terms I don't even understand lol.

i had a friend who placed bets on games, and nearly lost his home.

I showed him that after he paid for the "Tips" at $25 a crack, that he would have to be right 65% of the time...just to break even.

It didn't matter..he always had a "good feeling" about a game...and then he would ask to borrow money to pay his bookie.

Over the long haul, I've seen no happy endings.

    HI there,

I think most people would call it gambling, and it can become addictive.

    All the best,

I lived in Las Vegas for a long time and probably know more degenerates than most. I made a hobby of studying gamblers. Everyone has a "friend" that's a "winner". In reality, whenever I actually recorded their "winnings", they lost.

I'd put my skills up against anyone. Check out the threads such as the past NBA playoffs where I went 7-1 in the playoffs, or a couple of seasons ago when I picked over 80% winners in the NFL.

Here's the "secret". Virtually every sports better bets way too many games. I can likely "win" picking the NFL. I may be the only person in history who's ex said I should bet MORE.

But what she didn't understand is that there weren't enough real opportunities to bet more. Most sports betters will bet 5 or more games per week. I could only find maybe 5 games per SEASON where I thought those that set the betting lines were flat out wrong.

They also bet on games where they don't have enough info. For example, I'd ask people which team they liked in NCAA football. After they gave me a team, I'd say "how strongly" do you feel about this pick? When they replied they felt pretty confident, I'd then ask them, "what's the name of the quarterback for that team"?

These were people placing bets equal to a week's paycheck on 18 year old kids and they couldn't even tell me the name of the QB of the team they were betting on.

If you place small bets, sports betting can be a fun hobby. If you plan on being a long-term winner, good luck. Your best bet would be to follow a single conference in NCAA football, really know every team, only bet when those teams play against each other, and only pick the best opportunities, understanding that there may not be a good opportunity every week.

Here's the test: Can you NOT make a bet every week? If you find you have to bet every week, you're in it for the "action" and not for the investment.

And if you don't bet every week, you probably don't have enough money in play to make any decent money.
