Define Wisdom. Do You Have Wisdom? Are You Wise?

I actually got the word "Wisdom" from another thread here on the Off Topic Forum.
When someone says "He (or She) is wise" what do you take that to mean?

I don't mean the dictionary definition, that's too easy. What do you picture when you hear that someone has "Wisdom"? We have a few bright minds here.

Can you be very young and wise? Is it experience? Intelligence? Knowledge? A combination? Something else?

We all know at least someone we think of as wise...what does that mean?

    True wisdom is the ability to learn from the mistakes of others without having to go out there and have your own ass handed to you an endless number of times.

    To the question in your title:

    I've been called wise. I've been called a fool. The truth is probably somewhere in between. In the end, whether I'm wise or not is for others to decide, if it matters to them.

    As for what wisdom is... whole books have been written about that. Trying to define it in a few sentences or paragraphs seems inadequate.

    Is it the anticipation of consequences? Is it self-control? Is it virtue? Can two people be wise and hold opposing views? Is wisdom unique to individual experience and/or perception? Is it self-understanding? Is it maturity in thought and deed? Is it the marriage of intelligence and spirituality?

    In lieu of a short definition that pleases me, for the moment I'll define wisdom as intentional personal evolution. However, without giving it more thought, at this time I don't think there is a single, concise, all-encompassing definition that would satisfy me.

    Having said that, I have probably revealed myself to be unwise.

    Oh well, ya pays yer money, ya takes yer chances.

      Man that little tyrad sounded a LOT like my epistemology prof.

      I get called wise so often it should be my first name -- unfortunately I've also been christened with the middle name of "ass".

        Tirade? ...in my head I was using my "nice" voice.

        You know what's cool though? I missed more time in high school than I attended, never went to college, and yet I sound like a professor and have written three college text books. Is this a great country, or what?

          Tirad. HA - And I've been to college and graduated with much esteem and honors (after nearly flunking out of high school) - and might never get a paid writing position again in my life if anyone sees how I mush up words sometimes. LMAO.

          It's the keyboard. Serious - I know what I'm trying to say - just have some keyboard translation problems.

    "Wisdom is the daughter of experience." - DaVinci

    It seems to me to be illustrated by one's words or deeds.

    Saying the right thing at the right moment.

    Doing something useful and successful as Elon Musk did by founding PayPal and then SpaceX. (Not so sure about the Tesla Motor Car.)

    Or, not saying something when that is tactful.

    Or, not doing something stupid. We just had a large group of sports car owners stay at my hotel. Even the youngest ones had the sense to NOT take a curvy mountain road in the rain in an expensive car that weighs 2400 lbs and pushes at least 400HP.

    Dan

    PS - I know someone who knows Jack Nicholson and other Hollywood folks, so I'm 2 degrees from them. (Not bragging. Just making reference to another OT thread. lol)

    Back to the thread, Jack is kind of the wise ass in real life as he is in his characters.

        This is wisdom:

        "For everything in this journey of life we are on, there is a right wing and a left wing:

        for the wing of love there is anger;
        for the wing of destiny there is fear;
        for the wing of pain there is healing;
        for the wing of hurt there is forgiveness;
        for the wing of pride there is humility;
        for the wing of giving there is taking;
        for the wing of tears there is joy;
        for the wing of rejection there is acceptance;
        for the wing of judgment there is grace;
        for the wing of honor there is shame;
        for the wing of letting go there is the wing of keeping.

        We can only fly with two wings and two wings can only stay in the air if there is a balance. Two beautiful wings is perfection. There is a generation of people who idealize perfection as the existence of only one of these wings every time. But I see that a bird with one wing is imperfect. An angel with one wing is imperfect. A butterfly with one wing is dead. So this generation of people strive to always cut off the other wing in the hopes of embodying their ideal of perfection, and in doing so, have created a crippled race."

      Wisdom is hard to recognize unless you have a bit yourself. You are perhaps wiser than a PhD when you see someone who has the degree and notice their personal life is lived as a functional illiterate. Somehow all that money spent on book learnin' never translated well into real life.

      I am not counting the kind of people who often seem to fall into a bucket of the stinky stuff and still come out smelling like a rose.

    Wisdom is when a person is;

    1. Big enough to admit his/her mistakes,
    2. Smart enough to profit from them, and
    3. Strong enough to correct them.

    You can be considered wise if you know that the more you know, the more you realise you still have to learn. There is always knowledge and wisdom to be gained but it's also what we do with that wisdom that matters.
