I need help. I have a very good friend who is an incredible artist. He was diagnosed with MS and he lost his teaching job. I am trying to help him get back on his feet and i need some advice. He can do just about any type of artwork from webdesign to comic books, so he is extremely good and very versatile.

Is there anyway an artist of that caliber can make a living and thrive or is the graphic arts field so crowded that he should do something else. He told me he was going to have to sell insurance, which i think is a terrible waste of his talents.

Anyway, if anyone knows of a way that a really good graphic artist can make some good money or has any ideas, please post them. I want to say thanks in advance, because this was my childhood friend of almost 40 years.

God Bless and Thanks!

My suggestion would be for him to determine where he fits in on the "available talent" scale. What I mean is how good is he and what can he expect to be paid at that skill level. The rest is fairly simple. He needs to put up a Website with a decent sized portfolio and post his prices. The rest is about driving targeted traffic to the site.

Custom art is different than graphics in that there are far fewer people qualified to do legitimate drawings than there are graphic designers. That allows him to charge more for his work (than he could expect to get as a designer, for example) but it doesn't mean there's no competition. I don't know if Warrior Forum would be a good place to put up an ad or not but I don't think it could hurt. I'd strongly advise he stay FAR AWAY from fiverr.
