Google Pressure Cookers and Backpacks, Get a Visit from the Feds

The surveillance Police state is officially here. If you now just "google" terms, you are geting a visit from a "terrorism task force.

USA is outright finished.

Michele Catalano was looking for information online about pressure cookers. Her husband, in the same time frame, was Googling backpacks. Wednesday morning, six men from a joint terrorism task force showed up at their house to see if they were terrorists. Which begs the question: How'd the government know what they were Googling?

Hum, the link is now bad, but here is another one I found:

I feel her husband handled things differently than I'm afraid I would.

I just decided to let google go. I'm as done with compliance as I am with the privacy usurpers. I'm also 8 times more likely to be killed by a cop than a terrorist.

You are right, Sandra - it is gone. It has been, they were just quieter about it. Now that we know it's gone, they are getting just in-your-face rude about it. I feel like I went to be in the US and woke up in Germany circa 1938.

HEY, want to target terrorist homes? Perhaps 100% have had carrots, used gas, and have cotton clothes!

I don't have a pressure cooker, but my mother did. My father might! I HAVE been looking towards getting a backpack though.

WOW, you saw my more open and playful post. I figured some would get the wrong idea.

Actually, I have learned a LOT about tilapia. For one, the females hold the fertilized eggs in their mouths, and use their mouths almost like kangaroos use their pouches. During that time, THEY DON'T EAT! This means they don't grow as fast as the males! GREEDY fish mongers will bath the females in male hormones, or expose them to viruses that change them into inferior males. They can then grow as big as, seem like, act like, and even father fry like REAL males, but the offspring will not be as healthy, etc...

ALSO, I like the idea of having a viable microcosm that can be self sustaining. And WHO trusts the chinese anyway? NO OFFENSE to the chinese people on this forum, I am speaking about the companies and government. The ones that brought us LEAD in childs toys, human protein, etc... The ones that brought us melamine in pet food. The ones that run what is recognized as the most polluted city on the planet.

So you can see why I was studying tilapia.

Right so, l suppose if l research pressure cookers or lime fertilizer or nails or ball bearings, or backpacks, l need to make sure l go to an internet cafe in disguise, and make sure l go into a toilet block to change my appearance, etc, so any security cameras can't track me back to my car!

        Arrrrrgggg!

Researching atomic weapons on Ebay would be easier, l hear Russia has some bargains?

        Hypothetically speaking of course!

That's very often the way, though, Dan: the initial "story" (utter nonsense though it may be) is enthusiastically promulgated and promoted by those whose prejudices it suits, and the subsequent "explanation" or even "retraction" largely ignored.

I read the OP first post and the first thing I thought was "Are you kidding me? Surely not!" Then thanks to Jack Tackett I followed the link (click here) and then the follow up link posted by "policy" (click here). And those stories made so much more sense to me.

Personally I'm grateful the former employer notified the police and that the local police deemed it appropriate to check it out. I sure as heck would hate to find out 6 months or longer from now; that it was not investigated and those folks or one of them, blew up a bomb.

      Ah la irony.

Few people even knew about pressure cookers being a main component of an improvised bomb until they unleashed the information everywhere after the Boston incident.

I remember when the previously unknown word "pararazzi" shot to fame with the younger generation back when Princess Diana suffered her fate when the term was slung around all over the news and subsequently slotted into conversation at any given opportunity by the masses.

The media is the finest example of how fire spreads.

The fact they even knew this was going on chills me. If they were so damned worried about "security" -- they'd be watching a border that WMD are carried over with no problems.

Ya know - I am a very staunch rockhound - we use backpacks, and I'm also an excellent cook. Why should my government even KNOW that? Will I end up in an inquisition over it? I'm not proud of this crap -- at all. This is the BS that the Russian people had to live with daily during the cold war - and before the curtain fell. There's nothing GOOD about it.

Yep, unfortunately people will still ignore the real story because it goes against their view of what they want to think about this country or perhaps about it's particular current elected members.

This country has always had problems from day one and always will, but yes, we can still love it and have pride in it.

It is one of the foods that is considered very good. But WHY should they even QUESTION!?!?!? It is NONE of their business. Pressure cookers have been around for a LONG time. And usually they are simply to COOK!

Sal - You didn't read the link....it wasn't google or govt that questioned the searches.

It was the employer as the searches were done on a company computer on company time by an employee who was later fired.

With all the press about the cookers and the backpacks in Boston - it's not surprising someone might think it's worth reporting. Especially when it involves a fired employee who might be disgruntled.

It's a little known fact that Email is VERY limited! Do you think I can send you an email, or you me? News for you! MOST people can only mail to ONE system from their email account. That account then mail mail to ANOTHER, and so on and so on. So they ALL may have your email.

Anyway, the government said LONG ago that the main relays were responsible for KEEPING the mail to release to the courts. Snowden said that the government has a program that can, among other things, actually pull all that stuff *****AT WILL and ON A WHIM*****!

How is it a violation of "rights" to expect an employee to be WORKING while he's being paid for working? How outlandish is it to expect employees to do their personal searches and business on their own time instead of during work hours?

                What "rights" were violated?

Read it again Kay - 3 different people looking for 3 different topics.........and it happened by request of the employer? Which one did they report - which one worked for them. Why did they know what was being searched by the son and the other spouse if it was the employer? Her employer reported her to the feds for looking up a pressure cooker on company time - they would certainly know she's a cook........she works with those people. How did they know about the other searches? No, I'm sorry, it still stinks. I can see an employer firing an employee for using the computer for personal business on their dime, but not report that person to the feds. That, used to be what we called Malicious prosecution. So who was it searching what the other spouse and the kid were looking up?

Sal - It wasn't "her" employer - it was her husband's employer...and the husband had just lost his job.

a Bay Shore-based computer company reported suspicious computer searches by a “recently released” employee.

The searches were for “pressure cooker bombs” and “backpacks” — items used by the Boston Marathon terrorists.

...The employee in question was apparently Catalano’s husband.

We found out ... that the searches involved also things my husband looked up at his old job,” Catalano wrote Thursday night in a separate blog post on “Open Areas,” her personal site.

Earlier in the day, in her “Medium” post, the 50-year-old ruffled feathers by suggesting that cops had been spying on her family.
My guess is he had auto complete on and clicked on pressure cooker bombs when looking for pressure cookers. Stranger things have happened. He had been terminated and then the ex-boss found those searches and reported them - not surprising under the circumstances.

Surveillance isn't for our safety. It's to ensure those who won't go along with THEIR money grubbing and power mongering are kept in poverty and powerless. They could care less if we're shooting each other.
