This may be the dumbest question ever...

But.....
I am amazed at how many people don't know the answer.

I'm watching "Are You Smarter Than A 5th Grader".

The contestant is a frat boy, don't know his school.
In addition to the 5th graders to help him he has 5 of his frat brothers to help him.

The question: "If you're standing on the equator, which direction does the sun rise from?"

The contestant got it right, but, one of his brothers got it wrong.

So, I pose the question here.

Left. The answer is left, right?

Left or right? You gotta pick one.

Actually, it could be starboard or port.

I don't care if you're standing on the equator or walking on water, the sun always rises is in the East.

The strictly correct answer is: Neither.

The Sun doesn't rise, the protestations of Ptolemy and Hemingway notwithstanding. It becomes visible on the eastern horizon in the morning as a result of the rotational movement of the Earth, and its relative latitudinal position changes throughout the day due to the same rotation. This creates the illusion of solar movement, part of which we describe as "rising" and "setting."

There. I believe I've exhausted my quota of pointless pedantry for the week.

Well, sure, except when it's the other left.

I seem to have just a teensy bit of pedantry remaining, so I'll answer my own question. Your "left" hand is the one on the western side of your body when you're facing north. Except when it's the other left. In which case, don't give or take directions that involve potentially harmful consequences if you're not right. Which is to say, if you're left.

Left side is the right side to drive on as we say in the UK and so it goes for the Sun as it raises its head every morning until in the near future when the rotation of the Earth will spin in the opposite direction and that will throw everybody of course

Reversals do that, right. The Maridian fault line shook at mag 8 something back in the 1800s so strongly that it made the Mississippi run backwards for a day or so. That messed people's minds up real good and hard for awhile.

I'm sure if we start spinning backwards it might have somewhat the same effect. Specially if you dry your hair by the 4/60 method.
