Jail-guards and nurses at Ottawa-Carleton Detention Centre in Canada ignored a woman's cries of pain and pleas for help as she gave birth alone in a cell.

I'm sure they got there soon enough to take the kid away from her.

It's a bit old news as it happened last year - but I'm sure she'll do well in a lawsuit.

She was in jail for drug trafficking and fraud charges and was expected to plead guilty. Don't know if that got solved or not. Some interesting stuff if you check her out online.

There were people disciplined and fired over the case when it happened. She was released the day after the child was born - no one took it away from her.

        And rightly so.

Be that as it may, it doesn't in any way justify the reprehensible behavior of nurses -- medical professionals -- in ignoring her, not only heartless, but putting the both mother's and child's lives at rsk.

As well they should be. It doesn't remove the pain and trauma she had to deal with in that experience. But, you're right. Canada has been addressing it while many places would not, just keep it in the dark.

I agree - it was reprehensible and I'm glad it's been addressed.

At the same time, this woman put her unborn child at risk when she was dealing drugs and got herself arrested at 8 months pregnant. It doesn't excuse what happened but it's part of the story that some of the articles failed to mention.

Yes, she committed crimes and that's why she was in prison. She'd have done better for herself as a pharmaceutical company sales rep, still pushing drugs but legally. Illicit drug dealing is bad -- it funds terrorists, is the source of a high proportion of the most violent crimes in North America. If most of these drugs were legalized, that would stop a lot of crime and expensive incarceration of non-violent drug dealers dead in its tracks, save society an astronomical amount of money and radically reduce violent crime (and I say this as someone who can't stand even the effects of dental painkillers, and I do not think marijuana is harmless). I had a funny conversation with other day with two unlikely friends -- an ex-cop and a former outlaw motorcycle gang member (they're both actors) -- and that is pretty much what they said too (but not anything about if drugs themselves are good/bad/whatever).
