Everything else is fine and virus scan takes place daily and yet my computer has no sound now. Happened 2 days ago. Any ideas?

I had that happen recently. I was using Firefox and realized it was the flash plugin that was causing it. I just turned it off, then back on and the sound came back on.

Check to see if it is all computer sound that is not working, or only sound through your browser.

    Norma,

In the Menu bar at the top of the browser, go to:

    Tools > Addons > Plugins

I had Shockwave Flash installed, so I clicked on that Plugin, clicked Disable, then Enable.

I then closed out all Firefox windows and restarted Firefox. Once I did that, my sound was restored.

You might try disabling then re-enabling your plugins, because the updates sometimes alter settings.

A while back I went through test after test to try to restore my sound - only to find my speakers were bad!

Thank you Dennis. It worked! Amazing what people know in this place. The help and support is unsurpassed. Thanks to everyone else for their contributions as well. All appreciated deeply.

    Norma,

You might check the wires to see if they have been chewed on. I had a similar problem and found where one of my cats had chewed one of the wires. Simple way to stop the wire chewing is to rub dish soap on the wires and let dry. Works great!

You see at the bottom of the screen there is a little yellow speaker symbol - that is the volume control.

There are a lot of reasons sound can go out. I use Windows XP
so that is what I know about - but a couple of times I've had it
happen. Sometimes it has to do with some new software you've installed.

On XP go to accessories/entertainment/volume control and make
sure your audio isn't muted or turned all the way down.

If you are using a laptop test it with external speakers to determine
if your onboard speakers aren't broken. Headphone jacks can go
    bad too.

As a last resort you can uninstall your sound driver, boot your
computer in diagnostic mode, and have it use the "legacy driver"
to make tones. This will tell you if it's a hardware problem or
    a software problem.

This is a very sketchy description -troubleshooting these issues
is something to read and understand for yourself if you need to
do it. I am not proficient enough to give accurate information on
the topic - so I'm just sketching out a few of the major solutions.
