A couple of years. The water itself doesn't go bad - it develops bacteria and plastic begins to deteriorate etc. The best thing to do would be use glass bottles or brass containers & have water purification tablets, iodine, bleach etc.

It should be rotated once a year or so & tap water is less stable as well. Storing water, especially for a disaster scenario down the road, you need to keep in mind of things like Cholera which typically is contracted from contaminated water.

Just because you boil it now doesn't mean it won't develop a water born bacteria source - you might as well not even boil it, but boil it before drinking.

I use used soda bottles.

I don't want to buy ready mineralwater bottles from the store either since it costs $3-4 for 0.5 liter...

Basically, it the container is watertight and inert, it would last FOREVER! If you hav any biological debris, and something is in or could get in, THEN you would have things like algae. The most common way "water goes bad" is because it is stored in plastic containers that are NOT inert! They often give the water a bad taste, and may star to leak.

Doesn't Algaes love UV light? I had an algae problem in my fish tank a year ago and that was because the tank were exposed to sunlight.

  Fish tanks, by their nature, have biological mater. Algae needs the spores or watever, AND some sort of food source. Fish waste is a GREAT source of such food. Old fish food is ALSO.
  
  But SAL is right. Bacteria, especially, doesn't like UV light. BTW BACTERIA ALSO needs biological matter. Bacteria colonies could DOUBLE in size in 30 minutes, so OBVIOUSLY the idea of SOLELY water spreading bacteria is a MYTH. IMAGINE that ONE bacteria were in water, and it only needed water to live. In about 16 hours, you would have roughly 4 BILLION bacteria. An hour later, you would have SIXTEEN BILLION! TWO reasons why that won't happen, of course, is because overall resources are limited, and local resources are hogged. But boiled water in an inert container will have almost no resources! Those FISH won't last too long if you didn't feed them EITHER! Of course, if you had algae in the tank, SOME fish would eat that a while. If there were some bugs or something, they may use THAT. But that is because THEY are there! What if they WEREN'T?

  Sunlight has all sorts of rays - I'm talking about ultra-violet as in black light. Ultra-violet rays will kill bacteria. Won't do anything for heavy metals, etc, though.
  
  There is also a new purifier - it's called black mica. You put black mica in a pond that is sludged out and it will make everything clump together and you can just skim it out - leaves the water completely pristine in the natural clean state that crystalizes. It's incredible. It's also kinda spendy, but you'd only need a very small amount for a jug.

In a possible t-Virus breakout, the t-virus may contaminate the water in streams, rivers, lakes, etc.

t-Virus (short for "Tyrant Virus") was the collective name for a series of artificial mutagen RNA viruses designed as weaponized variants of the Progenitor Virus for military application. The t-Virus may have had an outbreak already since the cannibalism has skyrocketed around the world the past months (such as the man who ate another man's face on a highway bridge in Miami). In most cases, both the "cannibal" and the victim either gets shot on the spot in their heads, or suddenly disappear when soldier-type of guys with biohazard protective clothing takes them away in non-military vehicles to high-secure military facilities. Many of these facilities are known for having some sorts of bio labs.

From the article about the guy who ate the other man's face:

"Miami police are still tight-lipped about the man they shot and killed on the MacArthur Causeway Saturday afternoon, but new details back claims they had no choice: the naked man they shot was trying to chew the face off another naked man, and refused to obey police orders to stop his grisly meal, which one source now claims included his victim’s nose and eyeballs.

In the cases Aguilar mentioned, he said the people have all taken their clothing off, been extremely violent with what seemed to be super-human strength, even using their jaws as weapons.

“Extremely strong, I took care of a 150 pound individual who you would have thought he was 250 pounds,” Aguilar said. “It took six security officers to restrain the individual."

But as always when it comes to these cases, the officials says it's "drugs" fault. Why then shot and kill him? Why not tase him? He was naked and unarmed...

Joking aside, there ARE legitimate reasons to save water. I have, at least THREE TIMES, in the past 2 decades had to go without water for several days. I have ALSO been stranded in some areas without water.

BTW ALL viruses rewrite DNA. They generally only affect one type of cell, but they get the cell to make copies of the virus. THAT is why a computer virus is called a virus. Computer viruss have code(DNA) that starts when the person tries to start the HOST applications(DNA), and they affect OTHER applications(cells) by changing THEIR startup routines(REWRITE DNA). SO, whether it is HIV making all your T4 helper cells make HIV, or a given computer program infecting other such programs, they are spread and run in similar ways.

That is ALSO why they use viruses for gene therapy.

Same here mate, same here. When the winter is at its coldest in January and February, it's not uncommon that some water lines above ground freezes. Or that frost heave cracks the main underground waterline. When that happens, it can take hours if not days before the water is back because it's not easy to dig in frozen ground.

And when the Chernobyl disaster occurred in 1986, most of the radioactive fallout rained down in central Sweden where my mom lived. They couldn't drink any nearby water for a long, long period of time.

WOW! They should have the pipes low enough that the MUNICIPAL lines don't freeze, and the homes should be built to allow insulation. I KNOW norway can be worse than most of the US in that regard(It can get colder.), but THEY KNOW IT and should handle it. Of course, that doesn't get rid of a lot of cntamination, like radioactivity.

I heard SWEDEN was the first place to detect chernobyl, and they obviously aren't far from you.

  You think they have an easy time HERE!?!?!? I was at one contract once, and kept feeling EARTHQUAKES! OK, OK, that doesn't seem unusual, except that state had NO earthquakes! The quakes were due to EXPLOSIONS to blow throughrock for construction. Even mount rushmore was created through explosions!

I suggest getting something called "pool shock". It's basically dry chlorine for swimming pools. Liquid chlorine bleach breaks down pretty quickly, but pool shock has a long shelf life.

Then, buy a water filter to filter out the chlorine.

Also, get a pressure cooker and some potable water pipe/tubing and set up a still so you can distill water if needed.

Another option is to get some type of hiking water filter, like a katadyn:

James Marcus - Resident Evil Wiki - The Resident Evil encyclopedia (For those of us who don't game and didn't initially get taskemann's joke.)

If you can't get filters as others have suggested, and boiling becomes an issue, then glass or clear plastic containers and a few hours of sunlight (for the UV) with the cap off the container (evaporation) can ward off a lot of contaminants.

You could also build a distillery and make your own distilled water. Should be YouTube videos on the topic. (A little side note, I knew a guy who made enough hot water for his family use by coiling his water pipes around a 55 gallon barrel and burning wood or coal in the barrel.)

Kurt's idea about "pool shock" is a creative, good one. Just make sure it's a pure chlorine version and does not have any other ingredients added to it.

Phosphates (commonly from laundry detergent) also feed algae.
