We had had discussions on this forum surmising that spiders must be intelligent because of the complexity of what they have to accomplish. Terra, expressing how much spiders, er, impress her, started a thread on how spiders are among the most intelligent animals on the planet. This video described how one species of spider -- Portia Labiata -- is particularly intelligent.

"One of its ingenious hunting tactics is to lure other spiders from their webs for food. They perform this by plucking out rhythms on a web mimicking a trapped bug or insect intruder. The Portia Libiata shows signs of selectivity, where it chooses a specific prey over another. The species has an astounding learning and memory ability, if it has encountered a specific type of spider before, it will remember what rhythm pattern to use in order to achieve its goal of capturing the spider. The Portia Labiata has great vision and uses incredible instinctive behavior. Furthermore, The spider utilizes a planned trial-and-error approach in hunting."

Hopefully Terra doesn't find this thread, that's all she needs to find out is that some spiders can jump 50x their body length.

      Aw Geez, TB!

I was just getting used to not flushing spiders anymore and taking Sal's advice to put a glass over them and sliding a piece of paper under it, flipping the glass upright and carrying them outside, way, way far away from the house.

Just this morning I found a flattened black spider on the rug in our master bath and I thought, aww! Then I thought, It wasn't me, had to be hubby. But I would have tried to remove him as stated above.

Then you show me that! And I learn that some spiders can jump 50 times their body length.

Um, I'm not so inclined to be helpful now. I can see this is going to be an up and down, back and forth kind of battle.

Of course videos like this don't help either...
