Smart Business Spider Or Baked Spider?

My son, 3, pointed out a spider web in front of a light on the exterior wall of a shopping mall. He said, "Look, a spider web! Bugs like light. Good location for spider's business." I love how kids apply words they pick up from adults. Initially I agreed with him, but then thought wouldn't heat from the light bake the spider? Maybe it's not a such a good place for the spider to set up shop.

That would be Terra's favorite place for a spider to set up shop. ba-dum-dum

He's actually using the words in precisely the correct context. Businesses look to attract money (food), so it's best for them to set up shop in the same locations that attract their potential customers, such as the very shopping mall where you two found the spider.

As for the light's heat, businesses have to manage their expenses (pain) so that they spend as much as they comfortably can (on things like the best location to attract customers) without getting completely fried.

When are you going to start hiring your kid out as a Web business consultant? This discussion alone would make a perfect video. You two will make an absolute fortune!

Baked spiders are quite tasty. Smart business? . . yes, but not for the spider.

I've never knowingly eaten spiders before (accidentally, maybe). I've eaten fried scorpions, but that was because I mispronounced "fried eggplant" ordering in Chinese in a restaurant in China, then pretended that was what I meant (to, er, save face and look like...uh...).

We all know that spiders only operate their businesses at night, and just advertise their store front during the day.

Don't we eat like 8 spiders a year unintentionally in our sleep or something?

    Do scorpions taste like armadillo?

It's hard to describe the taste of fried scorpions. They're very crunchy and sort of taste like pungent bone marrow. Not pleasant. Still much more manageable for me than preserved egg or stinky tofu (China's version of smelly cheese, lol).

Thanks. I think I'll try to stay with steak, salad, soup, pizza, and what Coloradoans are familiar with as Chinese, Italian, German, Thai, and Mexican food...

I would have been perfectly willing to lose face and admit I ordered incorrectly. Having everyone in the restaurant laugh at me would be preferable to putting a scorpion in my mouth.

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

    Aww geez, TB!

You are the only one that I have ever, and I mean ever in my entire life, that has found a way to put a damper on one of my most favorite things to do...shopping!

Now I'm going to be paranoid going into and out of shopping centers or I'm going to run through the entrance and exits and probably hurt people while doing so. What if I trample a little kid?

Seriously, your son has got to be a complete joy to raise. He never ceases to amaze me with the way he thinks and expresses himself.

It didn't work with my wife, I'll say that much

I don't think you're in danger of bumping into spiders residing by lights near the top of shopping center walls. Those lights are high up and most people don't inspect things like lights the way my son does. I'm wasn't even conscious of their existence until he brought them to my attention. Usually lights are meant to illuminate things not so much to be looked at in and of themselves.

He is lots of fun. I didn't expect to have to constantly upgrade my knowledge in all things just to satisfy this insatiable curiosity. Today he asked me about mommy's hand moisturizer (her what? I had to read the bottle), what was it made with, do they own the farms that grow the ingredients (er, uh...), then to explain how the pump in the bottle works.

I don't imagine you'd have enjoyed his latest creation: A Lego spider.

        You know what?

I actually would have. I don't mind cute pictures/artwork of spiders or reading the Itsy Bitsy Spider to kids, or cute little stuffed animal spiders at all.

Pictures of real ones and the real ones just give me the heebie jeebies!

When I was just a wee little girl, I had a game with colorful pieces of a bug that you had to get put together before the other players. You had to put the head on the body, the legs on the body, etc. I thought they were spiders until my mom showed me there were only six legs on the bugs and that they had antennas. She said they were cooties and thus the name of the game - Cooties. I had thought that the game was called cuties and agreed the spiders were cute because of all of the bright colors of the bug parts, haha!

I know spiders aren't getting good publicity right now on this forum, but I had to share new information. At my son's insistence, we took a good long look tonight at the spider web beneath the high-up light on the exterior mall wall. Eventually, we saw the spider emerge, definitely alive, and quite plump looking. It is a well fed spider for sure. It even seemed to hiccup at one point (do spiders hiccup?)

I guess it won't be much of a surprise that my son dressed up as Spiderman for Halloween this year, lol. He sure enjoyed seeing other kids in costumes and chatting with young mothers -- quite the socializer.
