School in Long Island bans most balls during recess

Is it an extreme case of helicopter parenting or a smart move to keep kids safe?

That's what parents are asking after hearing about a Long Island middle school's decision to ban most balls during recess and also require supervision of tag, even cartwheels, due to safety concerns.

No longer allowed at the Weber Middle School in Port Washington, New York: footballs, baseballs, soccer balls, lacrosse balls and any other hardballs that could injure a child. Also off limits: rough games of tag and cartwheels unless an adult supervisor is on hand.

"We want to make sure our children have fun but are also protected," Dr. Kathleen Maloney, superintendent of Port Washington Schools, said in a local television interview, noting how playground injuries can "unintentionally" become very serious.

The school district, in a press release, said that due to construction going on at the school, there is "limited space" for the children to play during their 20-minute recess period. "With children in close proximity to each other, it is not safe for them to be engaged in unstructured play with hardballs," said the district.
It's not clear when the construction project will come to an end at the school and if kids will be able to resume normal ball-playing after it wraps up. A call to the superintendent's office for confirmation has not yet been returned.

Soft nerf balls will be provided during recess, and kids can play with hardballs during gym and intramural athletics.

This is ridiculous. Kids are gonna get hurt it's part of life. I've gotten hurt a lot when in school. I've gotten hit by footballs, soccerballs etc. And I've even fell underneath a merry go round and cut my knee.

About the merry go round. I was around 6 years old and me and a friend were running next to it trying to spin it faster and faster and faster and trying and jump on it real quick while it was spinning.

Well the friend got on it okay. But as for me I slipped off the merry go round and was drug underneath it and the bottom of the merry go round was spinning at a fast rate just inches from my face.

I was yelling for him to stop the merry go round. He finally did. I guess we should ban merry go rounds too. Or just ban all playground equipment because nothing is safe.

Raising a child is akin to knowing you're getting fired in 18 years and having to train your replacement without actively sabotaging them.

What these idiots don't get is that pain is part of growing up. They are so focused on the fear of lawsuits (and people are so focused on filing lawsuits for every hangnail)....they risk weakening an entire generation or more.

Kids get a bump or a cut and get over it. They learn to duck better - to be strong and endure a little pain - and they learn life isn't fair sometimes. Most of all, they begin to understand their own strengths and weaknesses.

Seems to me rules like this are harmful. We want kids to use nerf balls so they don't get hurt....and a few years later we want them to be "tough" in sports.

What sport is idolized? Football - where huge people knock into each other and pile on each other and tackle each other.

Of course, there's an increasing complaint that major league football is too violent and there are too many injuries. Maybe the wussification of our kids will translate into professional leagues for tag football?

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

I guess you're a hero in most Long Island parents eyes, but why such concern? These type of things happen in schools, and business's, everywhere . . . and particularly here in the UK. It's health and safety interpretation gone mad, and it gets more rampant every year. Zilch you can do about it unless (a) move school, or (b) put up for office, win, and change the regs.

They are not allowed to move without someone watching them - but are supposed to have fun. Yeah, that's gonna happen. Parents are arrested now if their kids are playing outside without mommy's continual presence, too. Good indoctrination to a society where the gov watches everything you do.

This kind of thing is partly government take-over -- but it's partly the fault of all the people who turned around and sued because their kid came home with a skinned knee, or got on a wrong bus, too. When the school gets sued for every little paper cut that happens because the staff "should have been watching", believe me, they are gonna watch. Schools are doing absolutely bizarre things to kids now and the "authorities" were aided the whole way by lawsuit happy parents. Now we have a whole little generation of automaton that wouldn't have a clue how to act without someone's nose up their butt. Completely wiped out survival skills and instincts, no common sense at all, not sure which way they can step without being arrested. These aren't kids we're raising - these are cows.

So - not sure how "confined" an area they are talking about, and maybe there is cause for it during the construction - but it just sounds like more of the SOS we've been seeing so much of. School administrators are accountable to their communities and their communities can fire them. If parents can't get to a meeting and tell the admin exactly where they are going to draw the line in the school's governance of their children, I'm afraid we're going to raise a generation of kids so worthless they will only resemble humans in the way they look.

LOL Kay - you posted while I was typing. Looks like great minds think alike. Too bad people that think like we do aren't raising kids now or it would be our school admin that were under observation - not our kids.

Unbelievable... I don't understand any of this. Why are we taking everything away from kids. I hope this type of thing doesn't spread around the country.

Most schools have taken halloween away from the kids already as well as holiday parties and the pledge. It's just not right. If people don't want their children to participate, that's fine, that's their choice. But, don't ruin it for everyone else.
