Today, Zookal, a textbook rental startup, is announcing that by using unmanned aerial vehicles to ferry textbooks to renters, it will cut delivery times from two to three days down to a matter of minutes, while shaving shipping costs down to a tenth of their normal prices.
Here we go.

Zookal starts "world first" delivery-by-drone service in Sydney | PandoDaily

A Joe prediction: Drones and 3D-printing are going to take over the world... okay, but they're going to be very big.

This is pretty awesome, I'd be concerned with someone stealing the drones though.

      Batman,

Of course there will be obstacles to overcome but this is the future. I would not be surprised if some of the bigger delivery companies are already looking at this.

If they start delivering fast food, especially Maccers, l predict a lot of target practice will take place!!!!

Or some clever crooks with nets will be waiting? Probably go cheap on Ebay?

      Or shooting them down.

There would have to be some sort of tracking and height limitation. There's already been drone/plane accidents. Too low and it will be drone/vehicle accidents - too high or in paths of airport take-offs and it's planes.

This kind of use seems neat on the surface - but there's a LOT of issues to consider before populating our skies with these things even for a reason as benign as delivery services.

I think you are 1,000% correct Sal. For example, I can see a lot of legal issues that have to be cleared up. And, drone delivery may not turn out to be a viable option.

Two areas that I think have a huge potential for drone-age are law enforcement and emergency services. "Family of three lost in Yellowstone National Park", drones could begin searching in minutes. A drone could be on the scene of an auto accident, for example withing a few seconds and provide valuable information to be relayed as appropriate.

But, as you mentioned, a LOT of issues to consider.

The drone may be able to shoot back... using the gun printed from a 3D-printer.

        I'm just thinking.
