How come no major stars or hits have come from The Voice in the U.S. despite good ratings?

The Voice is a hit in the U.S., but no major stars or hits have emerged in 4 years. On the other hand, American Idol can point to many stars/hits. Yes, Idol is older, but what gives?

Didn't we just have this same conversation not too long ago?

I don't care who is a hit commercially and who isn't. I found the latest Idol and xfactor to be irritating showcases for spoiled judges and questionable talent so turned them off - The Voice has great talent and I LIKE the judges.

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

  • Could be. I forgot to search the archive. I was watching the show and thinking what the heck is the deal with no stars. But I agree--I just watch for the talent and the comedy from the judges.

I would not be surprised to learn that several who were on the Voice now have lucrative careers in music. They may not be the "pop star" - big hype names of success - but I expect there are some careers launched there.

I abandoned the xfactor last week - it's just stupid with big hype, loud judges and a lot of "kid talent". Some really good singers were eliminated because judges couldn't make strong decisions.

The only two "reality" shows I watch reliably are The Voice and House Hunters International:p

I don't have a TV and have long lost track of mainstream music. Who's hip nowadays? Is it still Frank Sinatra?

Funny you mention country. I found this article from June which says the last winner of the voice is an example of the program's problem:

    Danielle Bradbery Wins

"As TV Line's Michael Slezak wrote following Monday night's performances, on which the votes for the winner were cast, Bradbery "allows Blake and his country fans to have it their way--midtempo, twangy love songs made with a quarter pound of lean beef and cooked and the same exact way every time.""

Personally, I think what's wrong with The Voice is that they don't create enough 'moments' on the show. Don't get me wrong, I love The Voice and the judges on there, but I feel there are too much attention on the judges rather than the contestants. American Idol and X-Factor created moments that we remember. Who can forget when Rubben Studdard beat Clay Aiken in an epic battle or when everyone was devastated that One Direction was eliminated from the competition (end up emerging to become the biggest boy band today). The Voice need moments like those to help the audience remember who that artist is.

That's just my take on it.

My guess is that Danielle Bradbery will be the Voice's first breakout star.

I agree with those that say it isn't music any more.

Very little real talent, all over produced slop.

And that is just the judges.

I agree, Kim. Especially with Idol and XFactor what I see are audiences that only want to hear the big high notes.

It's not that the people can't sing - but there are hundreds of "good singers" who all sound alike and to me they don't qualify as great talent. There's a screech to their tone and a tendency to do runs line after line to prove they can.

There are several on the Voice again this year that are unique in style and tone and it makes it interesting to me. Also, I like that the judges are kind to each other and to the contestants rather than competing to see who can be most snarky.

I don't "watch" any shows like that - I record them and there's a lot of fast forwarding involved.

Five seconds of my life hearing Demi Lovato say "I'm bored" is 5 seconds I'll never get back and won't waste again. On the other hand, I'm often entertained by the interaction of judges on the Voice.

  • Makes you wonder if some of the more unique singers from, say the 70s, that didn't screech and over do runs, but turned out to be stars would have a shot on these shows.

They probably wouldn't have a shot. But, then, isn't it true that some of the biggest stars to come from these shows are not the winners but runners up?

I think from the early 80s until just recently, people have been equating a pretty face with good musical talent. It does help with video production, but I think that "The Voice" is reminding us that good music is about good music, not just a pretty face that can sing.

I may be wrong, but it seems like recently people are moving away from the "video music" types and are really starting to promote the musically talented. And I think a big part of that is the easy entry point provided by the internet.

  • Leon would have made the final 3 at least although he would have to ditch the green, orange and black shirt:

I can hear the judges, "Leon, you know what I like about you...you are so REAL, man."
