Man shoplifts at courthouse minutes before theft sentencing

A pitstop to the Snack Zone at the Sedgwick County Courthouse lands a criminal in even more hot water.

Kevin Crowder, 53, was on his way to be sentenced for felony theft and misdemeanor battery when he took a detour to the Snack Zone. Here's what one eyewitness saw next:

"I went to the Snack Zone on my lunch break and saw a gentleman stuffing some candy in his pocket," said eyewitness Andrea Dolenz. "So I felt the need to report it. The lady who works there is blind and obviously couldn't catch him doing that."

"This one was a little tough to believe," said Maj. Michael Oliver with the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Department. "Where it was at the snack bar located just feet away from the security station. It was a crime being committed right here in the courthouse."

The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Department said Crowder stole Twizzlers, Reeses and some Pepperment Patties. He was arrested just 20 minutes before his sentencing for shoplifting. The Judge tells Eyewitness News, though the items didn't add up to much, it shows he wasn't truely sorry for his previous convictions. He then handed Crowder the maximum sentence: 15 months for theft, 6 months for battery. And he'll serve them concurrently.

Many who work at the courthouse said they make sure to keep an eye out for people who may take advantage of the cashier.

"It's one thing if you can sit there and watch your merchandise, but she can't watch her merchandise so we watch it for her," said Dolenz. "Try to keep your eyes and ears and watch out for each other because there is a lot of traffic. You just kind of have to watch out."

Reminds me of a guy I read about some time ago who was in court to be tried or sentenced (can't remember which it was now) for marijuana possession and got busted in the courthouse for marijuana possession (for the second time) when the bailiff smelled reefer on him. Some people just refuse to learn.

Note to self.... If unable to do something by virtue or senses, "look" at government locations! I SWEAR! A BLIND shopkeeper in a courthouse! I worked at a state mental health office, and the shopkeeper THERE was ALSO blind! I seem to recall seeing(poor choice of words!) ANOTHER state office with a BLIND shopkeeper!

I GUESS it makes sense! Pedophiles at SCHOOLS, FELONS in sterile areas in airports, blind shopkeepers! I "see" a PATTERN! We need quadriplegic bus drivers, deaf and blind crossing guards, etc....

Have to agree completely with Steve. To have a blind shopkeeper in an area/location known to be frequented by a proportion of thieves etc. is bizarre to the point of being surreal. Some things just make no sense at all.
