You know what's even more weird? This Dave Hall guy in Utah, is the same Dave Hall that was friends with Travis Alexander. The guy who was killed by Jodi Arias.

That would would make a good case for the rock tippers lawyer. Mount Rushmore defaced an entire mountain for the sake of tourism ($$). The lawyer for the clowns in the OP video should check to see If that state park had an increase in sales/visits following the viral video.

          Kim -

I think tourism was the goal - here's what I found in a history article about Mt Rushmore:

It was the brainchild of Doane Robinson, known as the "Father of Mount Rushmore." His goal was to create an attraction that would draw people from all over the country to his state.
An amazing feat and a crazy story, too...

The story of Mount Rushmore's creation is as bizarre and wonderful as the monument itself. It is the tale of a hyperactive, temperamental artist whose talent and determination propelled the project, even as his ego and obsession threatened to tear it apart. It is the story of hucksterism and hyperbole, of a massive public works project in the midst of an economic depression. And it is the story of dozens of ordinary Americans who suddenly found themselves suspended high on a cliff face with drills and hammers as a Danish sculptor they considered insane directed them in the creation what some would call a monstrosity, and others a masterpiece.

This type of thing is a pet peeve with the rock and gem hunting crowd. People go into places, destroy anything and everything they touch - no respect for the land, wildlife, or anything - just want to have fun. Then the land gets closed down to EVERYONE.

Put the public on notice: If you are destroying public land without a permit to do so and a rock and gem hunter sees you, you will most likely be reported for it and will face prosecution. We don't tolerate anyone messing with our right to be out there. It's a zero tolerance principle.

I just saw an interview with the dad on the news. He said he did that for the safety of everyone because the top was loose and could fall and hurt someone. Yeah, right!

He even said that yes, he would have done exactly the same thing if a ranger was standing right next to him.

Okay, make an idiot of yourself by doing it, then again, by posting the video, then again in a television interview.

The thing is devil, I do not see the point in acknowledging a story which shouldn't have been brought up to the public eye in the first place.

The story has reached viral proportions on the internet. On the other side of the planet, there are two civil wars in the Middle East in which the West stands to lose a great deal of face (Iraq and Afghanistan) that barely makes the 6 o'clock news.

Can you see how absurd the situation is? Don't bother answering.

In any case, I am indeed very bad in exchanging insults with other people.I'll give that to you. I am certain that for you it provides a great deal of entertainment but sadly, it is not part of my upbringing or my character.

I merely responded to another member who bemoaned some of the apathetic posts in this thread. I said a huge smiley served no purpose, and added nothing whatsoever to the dialogue. You chose to reply with a sarcastic comment.

Well, evidently, others ARE interested, and this is an open forum. Judgement doesn't rest with you as to whether the OP was correct in starting the thread, or those responding find it interesting enough to post a reply. At least they had a measured opinion or point to make, unlike some.

In case it's escaped your attention, this is the OTF, where ALL things are discussed - usually with humour, wit, and a sprinkling of sarcasm (please use online dictionary if unsure of meanings). We all know where to purchase newspapers, and we all have internet, if we'd like to be immersed in political events. And by the way, political themed threads are taboo in the OTF.

Who's exchanging insults? I merely took a gentle dig at what I (and I'm sure others) perceived as an unnecessarily huge smiley that served no purpose in the context of the discussion.

Don't renege on your upbringing or character, rather stay true to it. They say there's bliss in ignorance.

              I win what?

I get no satisfaction from verbal exchanges with someone whose standing on the elocution platform has been over emphasised, by a self-placed brick underneath it.

It's no loss to be on your ignore list. A meander through your post history uncovers a plethora of single line posts, mostly nonsensical, offering little (if any) in the way of either advice or humour, and smacks of a man desperate to be acknowledged and accepted. Well now you've gotten a taste of how strongly people feel about ancient and unique geological features........features that are gone forever when destroyed. You have a new perspective from which to view those wars we stage in ancient lands.

Every ecological landscape is of vital importance to its unique ecosystem. If you destroy the geology - the plants and animals follow - no matter how small or large. Chain reactions can be initialized that can't be reversed. There is no difference to our species in war against each other and war on the planet itself. Don't ever think it.

I kind of agree with socialentry. I read the title and wondered what was so sad and disturbing and it turned out to be some fat bloke pushing over a rock.

Personally I didn't find it sad or disturbing, just a bit pathetic. And if somebody wants to post a great big smiley with a look of surprise on it's face in response then so what? I think it really sums up the whole story quite well myself.

Maybe if some fat bloke pushed over the rock that was your loved ones tombstone, instead of some insignificant millions of years old attraction, you'd feel a little more strongly about it. We could put that giant smiley in it's place until the stonemason makes you a new one, huh.

I think the thread header the OP chose is expressing their personal sadness at the way of the world now, where fat blokes get kicks out of destroying something needlessly.

Yeah you're 100% right on that one. Have you seen the price of those gravestones lately?

No offence but what a stupid analogy.

They didn't destroy it, he pushed it over. I'm sure if the Americans can put a man on the moon 40 odd years back or whatever it was I don't think they'll find it too difficult to stick that rock back on that mound of dirt if they want to.

The blokes are idiots but I'm pretty sure most have us have done some stupid things in our lives but there's far worse people out there than some fat bloke being a fool and pushing a rock over, it's that simple.

To be honest I don't care two figs about this story but it just amazes me how some people treat it so seriously as if other people that don't are being disrespectful to a rock or something. Unbelievable.

Edit: Anyway to be honest I don't want to get into a slanging match about something so trivial because it's a bit childish so that's that really.

      Why join the thread then?

If others in the thread want to take it seriously then that's their prerogative. It doesn't bother me one way or the other. I think fat bloke is a moron. End of.

You're turning this into something it's not. I've not complained about people being disrespectful to a rock. I've simply agreed with someone else, and pointed out a dumb post of a giant smiley that served no purpose - in terms of either size or value to the thread.

If you don't understand why people are upset - then you don't understand it.

This is a state park. Many, if not most, state parks have regulations to prevent people from changing the landscape of the natural area.

You aren't allowed to dig up pretty plants from a state park to take them home - you don't create new trails by chopping down trees or brush - the idea of a protected natural area is to provide a place all can enjoy.

That means no one has the right to walk around toppling stone formations or anything like that. It's something Boy Scouts learn on their first camping trip.

The act was stupid - but the idea that Scout leaders would do that is shocking to many people who have experience with that group and its values.

What makes this story silly is the state of Utah doesn't have a problem with a foreign business strip mining other parts of land in Utah.

    Money talks.

They even had the stones to call the open pit a National Historic Landmark (fail).

Stories like this tend to reach hysterical levels when they hit social media. I expect many reading the story online have never walked miles in a state or national park to begin with....so their righteous anger is a bit overplayed.

I do not see the point in acknowledging a story which shouldn't have been brought up to the public eye in the first place.
So why acknowledge it with several posts?

Mines are nasty things............but...........you tell me how billions of people are to survive without resources. Got ideas? I'm betting that area was never geologically unique. The place where the vandal toppled the rock was. We CAN'T approve of a vandal destroying these unique places - there are a lot of people who would just obliterate everything just to have fun if they knew they could get away with it. On the other hand- we have to subject ourselves to mining to survive ourselves. The two issues aren't comparable.

I don't see how it can be said that it should never have been brought to the public eye?

I have been to many National and state Parks through my country and I find it disgusting that anyone can feel they have a right to do what these men did.

Idiots like these are why we have so much government interference in our lives.
It doesn't take much intelligence to know you don't destroy what doesn't belong to you. Especially if you were brought up properly.

The "safety" claim is just plain old BS.

When I was a child my family went here.

This was long before we had all the PC crap.
To get to these places we actually used the same hand holds that the natives did.
They did eventually stop that due to the deteriation of the rocks.

Places like this both deserve and need to be saved.

Some people can still appreciate the history.

I have seen improvements in park areas that are a result of people saying "don't do that!".

As a child I was disgusted when my family visited several monuments and parks. I remember looking down from a footbridge or from one of the "viewing areas" in the mountains where you could park and look out from a ledge.....and seeing the waste of film wrappings from old style cameras, picnic trash, cigarette butts...tossed over the edge by tourists. It took years before public parks realized they needed to provide large numbers of trash bins and more years before the public began religiously using those bins.

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

It didn't really bother me at all to watch it. But I can easily see how people would be bothered by it.

To me it's a rock - almost all rocks have been around just as long. And many other formations will be around just as long after this rock was knocked over. And as dumb as these guys may be, they are living beings. A rock is a rock. It's not worth ruining a person's life over a dumb mistake like pushing a rock over. Especially when there are a million other more grievous acts happening right now.

The problem is there are too many thoughtless humans running around that would continue the damage if it is not prosecuted. As a rockhound, I have seen how sites go to waste after the first person trashes it. Humans are just shamefully destructive when left to their own devices.
