I completely agree, believe it or not there are many who try to capitalise on others misfortune.

In the UK there are registered charities and over £13 million was raised in less than 24 hours towards the Typhoon appeal.

There are not confirmed 10k deaths - less than 200 confirmed so far, thank goodness...though that will certainly rise.

The Red Cross in the Philippines is estimating 1000 but a local official mentioned the 10k number and that's being repeated. I certainly hope it's not that high!

Praying Adie is ok but I know communications are out so it may be a while before we know.

Just saw some of the video - it's horrendous damage. They are saying 4 million people were affected by the storm (not displaced, but totally number affected in some way. Isn't that about 1/3 of the population?

Once again - as with Katrina - it was the storm surge that was the most damaging part of the storm. It destroys everything in its path and washes out bridges and roads which makes it hard for rescue groups to reach areas hardest hit.

I hope that 10k is an over estimate but I'm sure the death toll will be high in the end.

I just finished watching the local news here in Manila and the videos I've seen are beyond terrible. The destruction was on a massive scale. Not just establishments and fields - but entire cities. Trees were uprooted and scattered, buildings were completely smashed beyond repair. Even evacuation centers were badly damaged to provide refuge. Airports were reduced to skeletal remains and a chopper nearby has been toppled over.

I've been reading here on the Internet that the death toll is estimated to be 10,000. That is indeed too much and I don't want to believe it. But the local news says thousands of bodies have already been found lying on the streets and more are expected to be found under the debris.

There's no official fatality rate yet considering there are still areas where rescue teams haven't reached yet because the roads are blocked with landslides, debris and fallen trees.

People in these unreached areas are starving. They've lost families and homes. Now they're wandering in a complete wasteland, not knowing where to go, just anywhere where they can find food and a safe place to sleep. Children are getting sick and some patients in the hospitals that managed to stay whole died because there's no electricity to sustain the medical equipment.

With power out and mobile services down, survivors are sending their messages to families with the help of the news team, grievously reporting the death of their other loved ones on TV. It's so painful to see all this.

There are no power lines, food, clean water. Nothing. Officials said it would take at least 2 months to get the power lines restored and God knows how longer it would take to clear the mountains of debris and trees. I just hope these people are reached by relief teams soon so they can eat.

I also hope we hear from Adie soon. His location says 'City of Smiles'. That's the tagline of Bacolod -- one of the provinces here in Philippines. If I'm right that Adie is from Bacolod, then he's in one of those areas badly affected by this monster typhoon.

Oh. Gosh.

Philippines is on state of national calamity right now. We've been shaken up, washed up and blown over in the last couple of months. A 7.2 magnitude quake has hit one province here last month and before it could get back on its feet, this mammoth typhoon has again ravaged thousands of homes and lives. :'(

We appreciate the concerns and donations that will come our way, fellow warriors. Every single donation counts, no matter how small.

This is one of the hard parts of a global website - most of us wouldn't know anyone from the area hit - the storm wouldn't be so close and personal to most of us. But there's someone we've been sharing with for years in there and we don't know what's happened. It makes things real.....but not in a comfortable way.

That's a horrible storm but some of those places people lived were just waiting to get wiped out, the homes on sandbars are just asking for trouble.

Reminds me of the million dollar homes built on the sandbars off the coast of North Carolina, just a matter of time before they get swept out into the ocean. It's happened plenty of times over the years. I bet their homeowners insurance is out of this world.

It's not reflected in most of the stories yet - but the Philippines President said today he estimates there will be 2500 deaths from the storm. That's horrible but better than the 10k one official estimated.

Looking at the images - how do you put life back together? I know from Katrina it's a long slog - and this storm was much stronger than Katrina.

Whether it's hundreds, one thousands, ten thousands -- behind each of these abstract number of nameless and faceless dead people are families grieving, lost dreams and possibly wonderful futures that will never happen.

I can't imagine the emotional toll the victims are going through right now having lost a family, a home and for some, no idea how to rebuild their lives.

I've regularly experienced strong typhoons but was fortunate enough to not experience any economic and emotional toll as bad as losing a home or family member. (worst case I've experienced is a power outage for 2 days and not having Internet to do my work).

As for environmental damages, just a few uprooted trees in our area that are too feeble to stay upright anyway. So I couldn't speak from personal experience what it's like to rebuild after a crisis like this.

What i do know is that the government allocates significant budget for disasters like this as this country is vulnerable to typhoons. As for putting a life back together -- well, that's a broad question but generally speaking, after the rescuing efforts comes the difficult task of rebuilding: clearing up all the debris, building houses for those who lost homes, providing livelihood for them, restoring important structures, etc. If that sounds daunting, it is. Very.

We've had disasters in the past and had recovered but it does take time. This one is the worst we've had and I read somewhere that the damage may amount to 5% of the Philippine's gross domestic product.

Recovery won't be easy, that's for sure. But it's great that other nations are helping out.

The death toll for this tragedy is rising. For those people who did survive the storm, another problem looms over the horizon. They are left homeless and penniless, everything they owned are gone. Some families lost more than their material possessions with their loved ones dying or are already dead due to the typhoon. Many of these people are now left exposed to the elements as they try to pick up the pieces of what is left to them and start anew. Fear of cases of diarrhoea and other medical conditions rising is another concern many people are thinking of.
